the first vegetarian meal in Shanghai - Edit

Actually, I'm a Shanghainese. After living in Australia for a few years, I m vegetarian now (no dairy, but egg is ok). Today is my first day back in shanghai. And I feel it is really hard to keep my life style here, even if I do speak fluent Shanghainese and Mandarin. They don't know what vegan is what vegetarian is. I can't even fine a place where I can by soy milk or almond milk. But 豆苗工坊 saved me lol. Although the staff doesn't understand either, all the dishes are clearly labeled which is awesome. It will become my dining hall I guess..

Absolutely LOVE this chain! - Edit

Since moving to Shanghai 2 years ago (currently about to embark on my 3rd year) I visit one of the SW locations at least once a week. I love the quality and freshness of their food.

I have spoken with the owners many times and they are so friendly and lovely to chat with! I particularly enjoy the free reusable bags they give you, I use mine all the time!

Even my meat- eating friends love coming here to get their dose of delicious veggies. They claim its not like eating at other places whose veggies taste bland and boring. I realize SW is not fully vegetarian or vegan but it does have a wide array of choices for us vegetarians.

Any small problems I've had here is quickly resolved by the friendly staff. I highly recommend this chain to everyone!

Pros: Price, Quantity, Freshness

consistently high quality - Edit

Never been disappointed with a meal here, from salads and soups to sandwiches. Huge portions.

Busy on weekdays from 12-1pm due to SWFC traffic, so try to beat the work lunch rush. They serve juice here but there's also a juice bar right across from Sproutworks.

Pros: fast, healthy, value

Cons: food court

western veg options - Edit

Although I normally prefer to support places which are 100% veg, the veg places in China are mostly Chinese veg and are therefore all about mock meat. I'm not a fan of mock meat at all, and have been having way too much of it since coming here. That's why I was delighted with Sproutworks, where I could get 'western' veg options!

This location is in the basement of the Super Brand Mall in Lujiazui, so it has a totally different feel to it from their Xintiandi location which is at street level and includes outdoor seating, however the food is consistently good in both locations.

Pros: western food

Cons: serves meat

No mock meat, but western vegan options - Edit

After having visited some vegan restaurants in Shanghai I was delighted to find a place that is not complete vegetarian or vegan, but which serves very tasty vegan options instead of Chinese mock meat meals. Although it is located at the basement of a shopping center the atmosphere is quite nice and quiet.
The salad and tofu was very good, not boring at all, good dressing and reasonable portions.

Pros: Easy to find location in mall, No mock meat!, Western food

Cons: Serves also meat, For Shanghai a little bit expensive

Salads Galore! - Edit

This is a regular for me- tonnes of salads to choose from- each marked for meat eaters, pescetarians, veges and vegans so there is something for everyone. The service is fast and friendly- all staff speak English. They also do soups(40rmb), paninis(60rmb) and protein options including (my favourite) teriyaki tofu(20rmb)! When it comes to salads, you can order larger salads (30-45rmb) or 'sides' which have more variety (25rmb for 2, 40rmb for 4). There are also lunch specials between 11 and 2. They also have a great range of drinks and free wifi.
If you are looking for a great western style-salad, this is the place to go.

Pros: fast, tasty, healthy

Cons: sometimes it is too busy to find a seat
