Good food, embarrassingly bad customer service - Edit
Not all the staff are bad, just the girl at the register who was there on Mother’s Day this year in the evening. She had an attitude with pretty much everyone that walked in while I was there. The food was alright though. It was more like drunk food than wholesome food, but if that’s what you’re looking for then you will find it here.

Maybe the best vegan food in Pittsburgh - Edit
I visited this place as one of the last stops on my recent Pittsburgh trip, and I was amazed at how good the food was. This place isn’t vegan, has relatively no seating, and looks like the sketchy pizza joint that nobody but the locals know about. However, the Philly cheesesteak and vegan wings that I had were absolutely fantastic. Even my meat-eating sister thought they were incredibly delicious. Frankly, that meal beat out even the full-fledged vegan places in town, it was that good. I will definitely come back to try their pizzas.

I ordered a pizza with vegan mozzarella and vegan pepperoni. It was fantastic. I also tried the vegan seitan wings with vegan buffalo sauce and ranch. Beyond pleased with the price, quantity, and quality. My only issue was not realizing this place existed sooner!

Pizza and Wings! Yum! - Edit
We got the pizza with vegan sausage and cheese. The crust and sauce were really, really good too. The seitan wings were delicious! Chunks of seitan deep fried and smothered with barbecue sauce with vegan ranch for dipping. We got a "cheese steak" to eat on our way home tomorrow too!

In town for a few days and looking for some good vegan food. This place really hit the spot because not only vegan options, but local flavor too. Had the Pittsburgh cheese steak and threw on some fries. The seitan wings were good.

best spot in Pgh - Edit
Worth every penny. Hoagies are the best (seitan melt hands down the best, mix both vegan sauces), the wings are perfect and the pizza is good. You can’t go wrong here.

Shove all the calzones in your face - Edit
The vegan calzones are stupidly delightful...the seitan wings are pretty good, but as with most places I think calling them wings is slightly off...still tasty though. The seitan sandwiches need at least twice the amount of seitan...the seitan to bread ratio is all off, and would put this spot at a five star if they fixed that.

A "Spak"tacular Pizza Place (haha) - Edit
I went here almost a year ago, so the review is a little late.
Read moreI came during the summer on a day when it wasn't too busy. It's a very small place with a few seats by the window and one small table. I hadn't eaten any pizza since going vegan and had never experienced vegan cheese, so I was excited and decided to order an entire 10-inch vegan pizza with onions, tomatoes, olives, and spinach. My non-veg family members ordered a 14-inch regular pizza wth vegetables. There are many toppings to choose from, and when we went, they had a buy-three-toppings-get-a-fourth-free deal, so that was pretty cool. They make their pizzas with local ingredients and no refined sugars, and you can taste the difference! The pizza I ordered was delicious and even gained the approval of my family.
Pros: Vegan and Vegetarian options are clearly labeled , Star Wars paintings on the walls, Trustworthy ingredients
Cons: Small eating area, Nude paintings on the walls , Hard to find

All For Spak, Spak For All - Edit
Spak Brothers caters to the omnivore, vegetarian and vegan in one swoop. Pizza, wings, hoagies and fries are already famous foods for all the meat-eaters in this Steel City and so it was quite inspiring when we heard about all the vegan options available! ecoRDN were so stoked over the menu we decided to make multiple visits to sample numerous things in order to drop a well researched post into your lap (and eat so much vegan everything!)
Read moreSeitan Buffalo Wings:
We ordered wings twice though they weren’t as good the second visit. That’s not to say they were bad, they were delicious, just not as good as the first time. The first batch had gnarly seitan chunks, perfectly toothsome and rich to the eye. Whereas the second visit offered shredded chunks of seitan. It looked more like barbecue than wings, but the flavors both times were on point! The sauce remained the same, spicy piquant and buttery vegan buffalo with the sidecar crisp chunks of celery and luscious ranch which boasted an amazing aioli texture with a flavor like sour cream & onion dip, super rich and creamy! The food is quite salty, so be warned. During our third sojourn we schlepped the food back home and steamed up a huge trough of fresh broccoli on the side to cut the salt and it helped a lot. If you are eating a low sodium diet this is not the food for you. But if soulful vegan pub grub is what you’re after, you are in for an awesome treat.
Seitan Pittsburgh Steak:
Shaved hosemade seitan on a chewy lightly toasted hoagie roll topped with banana peppers, mushroom, grilled onion, grilled pepper, lettuce, tomato, vegan mayo and french fries! We in Pittsburgh put french fries on everything from sammies to salads. Gooey rich hits from the mayo and cheese combo lace the umami bomb of savory seitan and all that grilled caramelized mirepoix… Yes indeed! This is a remarkable sandwich. A perfectly executed Pittsburgh hoagie with the chewy crunch of the lightly toasted bun that houses the savory rich marriage of meaty seitan, lush vegan mayo and grilled vegetable umami goodness.
Pizza:
No toppings, we wanted to taste the cheese, sauce and crust. Absolutely perfect execution! Chewy crust, not too crispy not too soft, not too oily. Sweet sauce though not candy sweet, and not overly pungent with herbs, but mellow and rich. More awareness of the tomato and garlic instead of piney oregano. And the cheese melted up nice, stayed stringy and gave that rich fatty hit to drop the mic.

Like the olden days - Edit
I recently just visited here for the first time because I was eager to try their seitan wings to compare to Double Wide's since many people said Spak's were better. It's hard to tell which ones are better since they're both kind of different. Both are really good options. I was a little disappointed that everything came packaged as if to go, even though I was planning to eat inside. So when I asked to try two different flavors, I assumed I would get the flavors separated, half and half. Instead, they gave me the buffalo and the (vegan) honey mustard (which I had actually asked for BBQ and honey mustard) mixed together, which was somewhat strange, but not altogether gross. I also got the vegan ranch, which I was somewhat disappointed in. And, as someone previously mentioned, it was all VERY greasy. I also ordered a 6" blackened tempeh hoagie. I was sort of disappointed because it was supposed to be spicy, but it wasn't. But it was still delicious! The combination of the amazing hoagie bun, the pickled veggies, and the mayo took me back to my pre-veg days. My aunt went with me, and she kept raving how good the bun was, too. I am definitely eager to visit again and try their other options. I think this place will be one of my favorites. The only thing I didn't care for was that it seemed they are moreso designed to be a carry out type place, so their seating is limited and the bar we sat at had a cobbled tabletop which was somewhat awkward to eat at.

Overrated and salty as heck - Edit
This place is a cool little spot, popular with the hip and young. There are event listings on the wall and vintage arcade games. Neat space. Some stools and a counter to sit at. Also is on the bus line.
Read moreI had the seitan Philadelphia "steak" foot-long, with no egg, vegan mayo, and Daiya cheese. It was absolutely massive and too much for one meal! Trust me -- I was famished and have a generally huge appetite, but this thing was monstrous. A six-inch hoagie would be reasonable for one meal. Very tasty if you like seitan. Pretty salty overall but tasty. Great bun and vegetable fixing.
On the recommendations of other reviews here, I also ordered the seitan wings with vegan ranch sauce on the side. The were downright disgusting. It was like eating a salty, sour, greasy chew toy. I couldn't eat more than one. Such a waste of money and food, really. They were not cheap.
Overall, I'd recommend the hoagie but definitely NOT the wings. An order of two foot-longs plus the wings came to over 27 bucks.

I love Spak even though they hurt me. - Edit
Spak is pretty awesome, and it's right across the street from a small music venue where, like, Ted Leo would come through on tour, so you could totally see him come over here for an amazing vegan sandwich before a show, right? They have veggie meats and good pizza and Daiya cheese. It's a greasy foods sort of place and vegans have to have a source for that too!
Read moreMy only issue with Spak is that they charge an extra buck for the Daiya cheese. That's crap. I mean, look, Spakky baby. We the vegans make all of our omni friends order from you instead of somewhere else. We go out of the way to pick it up from you since you don't deliver even though Pittsburgh weather is usually terrible. We could have gotten cheeseless pizza with lots of veggies on top delivered to us and we'd have been happy with that, really. But we choose you because you give a damn and offer us options and we bring our omni friends to you and we write good reviews of your establishment because we think you make good food that respects our desire to not harm sentient creatures and destroy the environment. But you want to charge us an extra buck? That's hurtful, Spak. See my feelings? They're hurt.
Pros: has vegan cheese
Cons: charges extra buck for vegan cheese

I love Spak Brothers pizza! It's the best ever, even better than non-vegan pizza.
Read moreSpak Brothers has tons of vegan options. They even have vegan mayo and ranch. Wings and hoagies are awesome too. Every time I visit Pittsburgh I have to come here.
The atmosphere is great too. One time I came here with my girlfriend, and we were the only 2 people dining in. They don't really have much space to sit and eat (mostly a couple stools along a ledge on the wall). They brought us plates, napkins, and forks. We asked if they had any cups of water and they gave us some old chipped mugs from the kitchen that weren't really for customer use. It was a pretty awesome experience, if you like that sort of thing.

Best vegan wings and cheese steaks - Edit
This place is really exceptional. They have the absolute best vegan/vegetarian seitan wings and seitan cheese steaks I have ever had! They can make these either with real cheese and butter or with vegan cheese and a vegan wings sauce.
Read moreI take every one of my vegetarian or vegan friends.
Don't go here expecting to eat the healthy side of veggie food, it's not that. Instead it is the guilty pleasure style. When that's what you're looking for this place hits the spot.
Two downsides: there is essentially no seating and the wings take a while to prepare. But despite this, I keep going back.
Pros: Exceptional veggie guilty pleasures, cool art on the wall
Cons: Tiny
