Po’Boy Delight

Stopped into this lovely little pop-up today. First off 5 stars for coming to Topeka, KS, which is not generally thought of to be vegan friendly.
I decided on the shrimp po’boy with a side of jambalaya. The po’boy was quite tasty, although I’d like a bit more of the sauce the put on it. The bread and slaw were fresh and the pickles were a nice touch. It was a pretty good size, two meals for me so I’m guessing an eight or 10 inch sub. The jambalaya wasn’t my favorite, fairly bland. It would have been nice to have some veggies in it.
So overall: po’boy - 4⭐️
Jambalaya - 2 ⭐️
Cost is a bit of a factor as well. The sandwich($17)w/a side was $20. They offer a plate deal, which was a main dish(beef or chicken) and 3 side options for $26. Pricing here was a bit high for Kansas, but something I would expect to see in CA.
PS-heard the chicken was really good!

I wish more people would read reviews before buying from them . Their set up is extremely insanitary and you are lucky that you are not one of the many people they have gotten sick. I worked for them because they were desperate and just can't not warn people now.

Expected More

I mainly give them two stars because the presentation of the booth looked dirty and like they do not take pride in what they are doing. The food was okay. The saving grace was the Mac & Cheeze and Jambalaya, but I do not think this plate was worth $30.

Don't waste your time or money!

I've been to 2 of their events in different cities. I worked with them in Charlotte, NC..food was okay but pricey. Flash forward a few years in Raleigh, and they were charging almost $30 for a plate of food🤯🤯 if the food was good and portions were appropriate, I'd be okay with that. But for the junk I got, I was heated. I'd much rather go to an actual restaurant and pay less for better food. Avoid at all cost!!

Sad

Went to their greensboro popup. Food was pricey, looked nothing like the presentation. It tasted alright and they blocked me after I commented that their food was disappointing. A shame honestly. I regret not reading up on them before going. Do not waste your time with them! They don’t even have a website. So shady

Cons: Presentation , Taste, Price

Really disappointing and overpriced

This was our second time getting food from this food truck over the past few years. The food this time was unappealing in so many ways this time. My $30 dinner looked like a container of prepackaged beige food. The jambalaya seemed like it came out of a box. The Cajun corn seemed like frozen corn with some spices added. The fried chik’n had almost imperceptible breading. The mac & cheese was the only thing that was somewhat appealing. Everything seemed to be just tossed in the container. What we got was nothing like what we saw in the pictures from this business. I recommended this food truck to my students, hoping they would be influenced by exciting vegan food. I am grateful that they did not come try it.

Pros: Tasty Mac n cheese, All vegan

Cons: Food quality by taste and presentation , Expensive , Deceptive marketing

Salty chick’n

Was excited when they came thru Austin during SXSW, but darn if the fried chick’n was very salty, and the sides of corn, collard greens, and beans were so-so. And disappointed they didn’t have their namesake BBQ. They were short-staffed and on the road, so hopefully would be better next time.

Very expensive.

This was just okay. I was really excited to try them when they rolled through. Unfortunately, they were very short staffed, so the menu was small. The plates were very pricey at almost $30. The sandwiches were okay, really salty. The Mac N cheese was pretty decent, and the best thing I'd had. The tent where they were prepping was very dirty as well. It made me nervous

Unsanitary food storage and prep

Their food shortage and prep is well below the safety standards. There was no refrigeration for the foods that require it. The cook wears dirty clothing which also the long sleeves run through the flour mix as he's preparing the fried foods. Their is mold and disgusting food residue all over their equipment and cooler bags they use for the foods. People are getting sick and they don't care. Please help keep our vegan friends safe and boycott this pop up. Warn others too because they are ripping off well paying customers with garbage.

A miss all around

I made the mistake of not looking at reviews before going to a pop up down the street from my house. I got a plate for $26 that had "fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, and baked beans". Everything was extremely salty, and just absolutely mediocre. I really try to support vegan businesses but they are just cutting corners so badly and overcharging for it. They used super cheap ingredients and when I left after waiting a total of 1 hour for my food, there was a line wrapped around the building they popped up next to. SAVE YOUR MONDAY and your stomach... don't eat from here.

Pros: It was vegan

Cons: the food, doesn't look clean in the tent, expensive

After a bunch of unfortunate delays and staffing issues for SFV, they made the trip to Lonerider Brewery and delivered BOMB smoked “meats”, vegan bbq, fried chikun, and more!

Southern Food

I would not go out of my way to track this place down. Mediocre is the word that fits best, with unsavory service. I ordered a bowl ($15!) with mac and cheese, collard greens, and "Fried" chicken. The chicken was not fried. No crunch, no breading, no crisp. The mac and cheese was mushy and tasted only of diaya. The collard greens were way too salty and a little underdone. I ate all that I could stomach before my boyfriends food (ordered together) came out... 20 minutes later. He got the brunch plate ($16), a beige plate with a waffle, "fried" chicken, and hash browns. We were told my boyfriend had to wait so long for his food because the waffle is made fresh, but unfortunately, It wasn't crispy. The hash browns were those frozen McDonald type patties. And so salty. I surveyed the room and saw people unenthusiastically eating their food, but I also saw a couple go back for expensive seconds. Maybe it's a hit and miss food cart, or maybe we ordered the wrong things.

Over-priced less than mediocre food!

Disappointed! Over-priced plate for $20! One tiny piece of chicken and the other dishes (greens, mac and chz, yams) were NOT tasty at all. Don't give them your money. Sad to have to review a vegan business this way. Bad food, over-priced.

Cons: Long wait for food, Over-priced, Not tasty

Good, but needs work

Prepare to wait a long time in line! Now, with that said, their food is some down right comfort food and it's pretty darn good. However, their prices are outrageous and you get a tiny bit of "meat". I've had my food taste different every time too, which is a bummer. Some days it's on point, others it's undercooked and bland. I do wish they had a few more options and the price wasn't so high.

Pros: All vegan

Cons: Long wait. Expensive. Inconsistent

Tried it Once, Not Sure If I'd Do It Again

I tried SFV at a food festival. I had been seeing them at different vegan festivals for years, but was never willing to wait in line for it.

This time we ordered food from a vendor next to them and ate it while we waited. I ordered a bowl for $15. They offered a carb base of jambalaya or mac n'cheese. Then a veggie of either collard greens, coleslaw or corn, followed by choice of protein of BBQ chikun, fried chickun, and another option i can't remember.

We decided on 1/2 mac n cheeze, 1/2 jambalaya, collard greens, and fried chickun. The fried chickun was actually only a triangle shaped nugget and they only provided one piece (stingy!) so I gave it to my sister. She said it was good. The mac n' cheeze was decent - I would order it as a side if they offered it separately. Unfortunately, the greens and the jambalaya were bad. The collard greens were clearly mixed with kale and chard - not sure why they wouldn't just say that - and they were underseasoned and undercooked, definitely not southern style. The jambalaya was bland.

I see they have a lot of future events. For a reasonable price, I may try them again but lately I've only seen them offer an overpriced buffet event for $39 ($30 for a one-time visit). I noticed their prices are cheaper outside of L.A. though.

Pros: Good fried chicken nugget and mac n cheeze

Cons: Bland taste, Expensive

Great Concept; Needs Better Execution

When I first heard about SFV, I was so excited to try some good ole southern vegan cuisine. It didn't quite live up to my expectations, but it was ok.

I have had their food at festivals, so I am unsure if the prices are jacked up to recuperate the expenses of traveling to these festivals or if they are normally that high. As someone previously mentioned, one bowl will run you $15. On my most recent encounter, I got a bowl with jambalaya, 1/2 corn, 1/2 collard greens, and fried "chicken." They give you a LOT of carbs (jambalaya rice, in my case), and a good amount of veggies. However, I got a small slither of fried "chicken," which resembled a nugget more than anything. Because I love sauce, I am always annoyed at the drizzle that they put over the bowl. I'd prefer extra.

They seemed to have improved on the quality of the collards. Anyone who has a true Southern upbringing can tell you that when picking greens, you toss those bulky stems. On SFV's previous trip to my current city, my greens were 90% stems and I was NOT a happy camper. This time, I had more of the actual collard leaves.

The flavor of the jambalaya and the greens were just OK; the jambalaya was borderline bland. Both dishes could use a boost of flavor. The corn and the fried "chicken" nugget were perfectly seasoned.

I have had their "Chicken" and Waffles, and they were quite yummy, although the waffle could've used some (or some more) vegan butter to enhance its flavor.

Pros: all vegan

Cons: expensive

Southern comfort, vegan style

Privileged & pleasure to indulge in Southern Fried Vegan's Sunday brunch bowl at SoMa StrEat Food Park's Vegan 2nd Sunday, while visiting San Francisco, October 2015.
Choose the Mac&Cheese, collard greens, topped with BarBQ chicken drizzled with cheesy sauce. WOW! Been vegan for 10 years now, & non vegan food was never this good.
Looking forward to trying more of their tasty food next trip west.

Added May 2016.
Thoroughly enjoyed Southern Fried Vegan at Oakland VegFest, 5/21/16. Irresistible bowl with Mac&Cheese, collards greens, & this time the BarBQ beef flavor with cheesy sauce. As good as it gets! The Philly Cheesesteak was a keeper, too. Looking forward to next opportunity to dine in such delicious-ness.
