My train, I'm certain, left the station just when it was due - Edit

We decided to catch an earlier locomotive from Hull to York to break up the journey north. A formidable review from my close Happy Cow colleague Dead Pledge helped decide the place where lunch would take place. Source impressed immediately. We had to wait a few minutes for a table to become vacant but this wasn't a problem. Once seated we knew great things were about to happen. The separate vegan menu is very creative and full of well planned dishes. We had the vegan chicken served with fries, a bbq style dip and a red cabbage side and a vegan platter with hummus, olives charred vegetables, pickles and avocado on bread. The vegan chicken was just amazing. It had a bit of a fiery kick and a firm filling texture. At £13.50 I did think it was a touch pricey, but I wouldn't hesitate ordering it again. Price goes out of the window when the quality speaks for itself. The open kitchen here has nothing to hide, Source is a great option for serious vegan dining in York.

Pros: separate vegan menu, friendly staff, excellent location

A source of vegan goodness - Edit

We went here for lunch and ordered the BBQ jack fruit and vegan fried chicken, both of which came with chips and red wine braised cabbage from the separate vegan menu. Service was quick and the portion sizes were generous and most importantly the food was superb. The vegan fried chicken and accompanying BBQ dip were simply stunning and perfectly cooked. The texture of the chicken was so realistic. The BBQ jackfruit was also delicious but could have perhaps come with one more wedge of bread. In total we spent £27, which was a little expensive but worth it in my opinion. The staff are very friendly and we will definitely visit again.

Pros: Tasty vegan food, Friendly staff, Seperate vegan menu and labelled wine

Cons: Serves meat, Expensive (but worth it)

would give 5 stars if I could!! - Edit

This place is amazing for vegans! A separate vegan menu, really friendly staff and a fake meat option as well! Couldn't fault the place. Was a bit pricey but the portions are a really good size. If you're in York, would definitely check this place out!

Friendly - Edit

Very friendly people. Ordered the vegan loaded nachos, very disappointed. Not my taste! :-(
Guess other options are good?

Vegan fried chicken and jackfruit were amazing. It's a great place to take people with any dietary requirements. My parents both enjoyed their burger and salads

Great Vegan Food - Edit

I have been to Source twice now, and have tried the Vegan loaded nachos, the BBQ jackfruit, and the Vegan fried chicken. All three of these were very tasty, my favourite being the vegan fried chicken, which is basically just vegan chicken nuggets and chips! The BBQ jackfruit was my least favourite as i found the spicy flavour to be a bit overpowering. Nachos were great.
Loved that Source offers a seperate vegan menu! Really recommend this restaurant

Pros: Tasty Food, Separate Vegan menu

Good food - Edit

Boyfriend says: lit af
I say: good to find a place with a separate vegan menu. I had "pulled pork" meal and bf had "fried chicken". Both were really good, although the coleslaw wasn't great. Hopefully they will extend the menu because there's not many mains to choose from. Generous helping of nachos as a starter too. They have a vegan chocolate mousse for dessert too. Will definitely go again, and good choice for if there's a group of you with non-vegans etc.

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Nice setting/decor

Cons: Not a lot of choice/small menu

Loved The Vegan Fried Chicken - Edit

I was on a trip to York with friends and had to find somewhere catering for us all and Source won the day, as they have a fabulous vegan menu.

I loved the creative vegan options, far removed from the run of the mill dishes, sometimes offered, with the special of the day, proudly chalked on the blackboard.
I really wanted to have the vegan 'fried chicken' made from seitan, but was concerned it may contain soya, our waitress confirmed that it was soya free, with chef.
The seitan was a triumph, it was light, had a fantastic texture, was delicious, but not oily in the least and with the dipping sauce, fries and red cabbage, was a spot on lunch.

I had a chat with chef, to compliment him on the seitan, explaining my own disasters and he took the time, to give me some tips, so I will definitely have another go.

I love how vegan friendly Source is, I hope other vegans fully support their commitment, I would certainly love to return and sample other dishes on the menu.

Pros: Vegan menu , Creative vegan options, Plenty vegan choices

Lunch time treat! - Edit

I came here for lunch whilst on a short break in York. There was my vegan self, my meat eating friend and my other friend who hardly eats anything.
They had a couple of great vegan options, I tried the whole roasted cauliflower with sweet potato fries which was really really good! Massive portion for lunch but I should have expected that! The menu is good with some great salads on there, they had a Vegan 'chicken' special too which was intriguing.
It was busy for a Monday lunch and just 1 chef and 1 FOH staff, she was lovely. I think an owner/manager but not 100% sure. She was very accommodating and very nice.
I would definitely come to try more if I was local to the area.
It was a little cold inside but I suppose that's down to personal preference!

Pros: Good vegan options , City centre location

Cons: Toilets could do with a spruce up
