We had the smashing burger and the stir fry rice. The burger was nice, but small and tall, impossible to eat with your hands; the mushroom inside was quite chewy. The stir fry, was just some boiled rice with Peppers, green beans and Cashews. Quite a sad dish and the ingredients didn't taste fresh. Prices are too high for the quality of the food.

Hi there, I am really sorry you were not happy with your food, this is not what I'm aiming to provide. I am also a little surprised as I did personally check with you during the meal if everything was OK, and you seemed to be pleased with it. If you have flagged any problems, I would be more than happy to change. The Stir Fry comes with brown rice cooked with chilli, mushrooms, and soy sauce, so definitely it's not plain boiled rice. It has indeed peppers, beans and nuts as well as pineapple and chilli, which you specifically requested to leave both out of the dish - and I do believe those two ingredients play a big part in the flavour of the stir fry.
Read moreThe burger is quite tall and a bit messy to eat, yes, the only explanation I can give is the homebaked gluten free bun is very different to soft store bought buns that are easier to squish.
As for the freshness of ingredients, majority is prepared on the day so am very sorry you did not think it was up to standard, and once again, should you inform me of it when I checked with you, I would be more than happy to investigate and replace the dish if there was something wrong with it - mistakes happen and I can only correct them and improve if I'm aware of them.
I do however appreciate the feedback, as I always strive to get better and better. Once again really sorry you were not happy, and I hope you'll give us a chance again, I have a big following of regular customers who never voiced such concerns as yours, and I belive i can make you and your partner to fall in love with the Smashing Kitchen.

Smashing food on a rainy day - Edit
We had two chillis which was perfect on a windy, rainy day. They had lots of salads and other hot food as well as great cakes to finish off. Had a very healthy immune tea and a smoothie for a walk up the road.

I came couple of time and the food is tasty, healthy and good quality but the price is too crazy. I ordered a balsamic salad at 6.5£ the take away box was half full for some mixed leave, sliced cucumbers and cherry tomato. When I was eating I was just seing money. It’s ridiculous ! I am also a vegan chef and this was a joke, à least fill up the box and make your costumers happy, doesn’t cost you much more. Very disappointed, can be a good place to eat, the trade is not fair enough.

You are right indeed, for that particular salad (which is a very simple side salad) the box should have been filled up - please accept my apologies for that mistake. All the other salads which are priced £7.20 for large, have LOADS of other toppings, hence the leaves are only half way - this must have been a mistake in preparation and I'm really sorry for it. I believe that all the other dishes are very reasonably priced, for the size and quality, and in comparison to other establishments - you will get a big main hot dish for £8-8.50 here. I would love to compensate it for you should you be willing to return. I'm always on site but will also instruct the staff to offer you a free salad on your return. All the best, Asia, the owner.

Read moreTucked just off the lower end of Mare Street in a bit of Hackney that used to be rather scary to some this little cafe feels like an old school part of Hackney’s Alternative scene rather than part of the new wave and all the better it is for that! The service is super friendly and helpful. The food is homemade so they know what ingredients are used, what sweeteners are used etc. We went just for desserts and were stuffed n satisfied by the gorgeously creamy key lime pie, a peanut and choc slice and a thick smoothie. comrade Ana had trouble finishing her smaller share but mine washed down well with a perfect Earl grey Redbush tea. This place is good and I hope to visit again.
Returned in December 2019 for a breakfast. Smashing opens considerably earlier than the other vegan outlets in the Hackney area. For those interested in Gluten Free food this place specilaises in it. We had the Blueberry pancakes and homemade pate on toast with tea and coffee. Great!

If I could give this place more stars I would! This is the second night me and my partner have been in a row. If you're looking for healthy home-cooking which is comforting and delicious look no further. We had the hummus and soup for starter. Both fantastic. Hummus made with butterbeans and without oil! We had the chilli and chickpea curry first night and went back for the pesto GF Lasagne the second! All packed with flavour and generous portions. Both nights we finished with the choco peanut cake! Asia the owner really knows her food! Cannot wait to go back!

The restaurant has a homely feel with lots of plants. More importantly, the food was superb and the staff was very friendly. I was curious to see how the food tasted that I, accidentally, ordered two main dishes: a lentil soup, well-filled and savoury, and a cold rice noodle salad, zingy and nice on a hot summer evening. My partner had a simple yet super-tasty salad and carrot cake as dessert. Also, the cook came by and asked if we enjoyed the food, a nice touch to the service.

Really fab vegan GF restaurant just off Mare St. The owner/ chef is wonderful and so attentive and accommodating with food allergies. Very diverse menu with lots of options for soya allergy, and all absolutely delicious and freshly made. Really tasty cakes, cookies and even sugar free options. They always play fabulous 70s disco which puts everyone in an upbeat mood. One of the best vegan restaurants in east London!

Went to this cafe to work and had an amazing breakfast (smashed avocado and hummus on toast) with frankly INCREDIBLE fresh home-made bread, lightly toasted.
Read moreFor lunch I had large salad with several options to top the salad leaves. I had spicy chickpeas; fragrant red pepper and tomatoes, more amazing guac, red cabbage and the best vegan potato salad I’ve had out.
The ambience was just lovely, relaxed and the chef and the staff were all really lovely. Next time I’m in London this cafe will be my base! Free WiFi, very reasonable prices and feel almost too good to be true!

I live local and found this Happy Cow listing and was so happy I did. They have only been open a month and doing an awesome job. I had a salad and was genuinely blown away by how tasty it was, salads don’t have to be boring! Very nice service and atmosphere too. :)
