Good breakfast - Edit
Good vegan options. We had a really nice breakfast here and got some vegan cake and pasties to take away. Upstairs has a decent seating area with views of the square.

Fresh and filling lunch option - Edit
Went to this place while looking for a quick lunch. Downstairs with the shop is a small selection of salads, but above the stairs there is a full restaurant. Had the Rosti Stack and the Simple Salad Bowl. I expected the salad to be rather light, but was surprised by a rather substantial portion of delicious fresh greens, beets, a full avocado, a huge spoonful of homemade hummus and lots of crushed walnuts. It was a full meal and I had to take some of the hummus home. The Rösti stack (available in vegetarian and vegan options) was equally fresh and tasty.

Really lovely place - Edit
I stopped on my way through Donegal, and was very happy to find this cafe. I had the vegan falafel wrap and 2 vegan salads, both of which were yum. The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Portion was big enough, and left full and happy.

Vegan options if you’re lucky - Edit
At 10:30 am there were a total of two vegan pastries available, one curry chickpea pastie and one mashed potato roll (labelled as sausage roll). No other ready to go vegan options, but plenty of non-vegan baked goods and in reasonable quantities. In my opinion, 10:30 in the morning is too early to be out of vegan options and I’m glad we could buy something over nothing, but if we had come any later we wouldn’t have been able to buy anything. Just stressing this so that if anyone is planning to rely on this place for lunch, have a backup option.
Read moreNow the options:
Pastry labelled as a vegan sausage roll - pastry filled with mashed potato. We purchased this to eat cold for lunch later and didn’t expect the filling to be just mashed potato, which is never nice cold. If we knew, we wouldn’t have purchased.
Pastie - curried chickpea filling, really well flavoured and yum even cold.
Coffee is average, wouldn’t call it good. Too bitter and watery. Asked for it to be not too hot, even waited 5 minutes after getting it to take a sip and burnt my tongue. Not sure if it was misheard as extra hot? Milks available - oat, coconut, almond.
I’m guessing this place is so well reviewed because there are so few vegan options in the area. I’m mindful that this review sounds quite negative, but the current reviews set unrealistic expectations.
Pros: Vegetable pastie, At least some vegan food
Cons: Number of options limited and ran out early, Fillings of pastry not indicated

Love this place - Edit
Not enough vegan options today but the are on a smaller menu.
Read moreFrom an eco conscious point of view the fridge should have doors as its blowing cold air into warm.
No vegan butter for bread but they sell it downstairs, had to buy a tub and bring it upstairs.

Tasty breakfast - Edit
Simple Simons was a pleasant surprise on a rainy day in Donegal. The restaurant on the second floor is cozy and the friendly and helpful staff ensure a good atmosphere. It is not immediately apparent from the menu that there are vegan dishes available, but if you ask for it, you will be given options. I thus had a tasty vegan breakfast. If I come back to Donegal another time I will definitely revisit Simple Simons.

Nice cafe in Donegal town - Edit
Deli cafe, health food shop and patio area downstairs. Sit down cafe/restaurant upstairs. Not too many vegan options upstairs. I went for the falafel wrap which was toasted, a nice touch.

Vegan friendly - Edit
A great find for a fresh lunch, and a dog friendly courtyard out back. The vegan wrap and choice of two salads were fresh and plentiful. Apparently there was also a vegan soup. I had vegan ginger cake afterwards with an espresso coffee. (Great coffee!) The health store alongside the cafe has a huge selection of products, and very helpful, friendly staff to help out. Well worth the visit.

Good Coffee - Edit
Great option to stock up some vegan products if traveling around Donegal. Very good selection of vegan cheeses for example. Price is the same as in the capital (Dublin) a bit pricey so. I was a bit disappointed with the coffee shop! No vegan pastries and cakes the day I went. Very few vegan options on the menu, my partner who is a vegetarian was quite happy though.

Some vegan items - Edit
The cafe at the front has a few vegan items including salad and cakes. At the back it's mostly dry and packaged health food type products but does include a small selection of vegan cheeses and Tofutti mock meats and surprisingly a good selection of organic and natutal wines.

STOCK UP HERE IF YOU ARE SELF CATERING IN DONEGAL - Edit
Great selection of vegan foods, only discovered it on day 5/7 of my Donegal trip in Portnoo (where it is remote so very limited options). So many vegan items in the shop I hadn't even seen in England! Cheese, pesto, sauerkraut, fake meats, veg sausages & beans and tonnes more! Management also seem very nice!
