My favorite restaurant has problems

Let me preface this by saying Siam Cuisine is my go to restaurant, and has been since I was very young. I am biased by nostalgia and their familiar flavors that shaped my experience of Thai food. It is my opinion that their Thai is unmatched by any other restaurant in Alaska, however, I must acknowledge that this restaurant is not without problems.

Siam Cuisine is extremely accommodating. Practically any of their offerings can be veganized by substituting with vegetables and tofu, and removing non-vegan ingredients. Unfortunately, many of their dishes rely so heavily on non-vegan ingredients such as oyster sauce, fish sauce, and animal broths. Without them, dishes like pad thai and tom yum lack significant flavor. There are substitutes out there, but to my knowledge Siam does not utilize them. As a result many dishes suffer from blandness or over salting. There is no guarantee that the veganized dish will be good. Siam would do well to make a specialized menu of vegan options while incorporating actual vegan substitutions (fish sauce made from seaweed, oyster sauce made from mushrooms, veggie broth, etc).

Another problem is their inconsistency. Siam Cuisines takeout often seems more rushed than the meals I get dining in. They sometimes lack full flavor, and on a couple occasions I could swear they forgot the curry paste in my kang ped (red curry). This inconsistency exists across the board, but it is most notable in their takeout.

Related to inconsistency, my most grievous concern is their frequent inattention to vegan requests. It seems that every other visit I am given a dish that is unmistakably not vegan. I can’t help but think of the times I’ve received a non-vegan dish and not noticed because fish and oyster sauce are ingredients not as apparent as meat or egg. Every time I order I repeat my vegan request for the dish and list the ingredients I don’t want included. And yet it’s 50/50 whether that request is honored. This needs to stop if I’m going to continue to eat here.

I don’t mean to come across as hating on Siam Cuisine. I love this restaurant despite its flaws. The people are great and so friendly, it has a really nice atmosphere, and when the food hits it reallllllly hits. I would just like to see Siam Cuisine improve because I love it so much. I want to continue to appreciate them and frequent their business for a long time.

Pros: Best thai food in AK, Everyone is so kind, Nearly anything can be veganized

Cons: Poor vegan substitutions, Inconsistency (quality and veganizing), Expensive

Pretty poor

Pretty sad food tbh. The appetizers had no flavor and the spring rolls were very basic. The entree had not really any flavor. Expensive. Wouldn’t recommend

Pros: Was edible

Cons: Not very tasty, Expensive

Weak

We got fresh veggie spring rolls and pad Thai. The spring rolls were $12 for 4 of them and they were literally just Romain and some noodles. Pretty pathetic. The pad Thai wasn’t horrible but wasn’t anything special. It was a good sized portion but not a lot of flavor.

It was also an excessive amount of waste for take out. It was tied into two plastic bags and then the spring rolls were saran wrapped inside the container with 4 small dip containers that could’ve been just one. Pretty expensive place and I probably wouldn’t go back again.

Delish & easy vegan

When I asked what could be vegan, I was told “You just tell me what you want, and the kitchen will make it for you, with no fish sauce, no egg”. It was really just that easy and “vegan” was clearly understood. I asked for suggestions, and settled on the Panang curry with tofu. I also ordered the tofu satay and spicy fried cashews to share. There was so much food, all extremely delicious, and plenty for a meal left over. The service was great and the food came out quickly. We loved this place.

Pros: So many vegan options- just ask, Tasty & ample portions, Friendly, happy atmosphere

Cons: Veg isn’t specified, be sure to ask.

Good dinner

We had dinner here and loved the food, especially the pad kee mao. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about vegan dietary requirements. They saw that I liked peanuts and even gave me an extra small dish of them. Prices were reasonable and portions generous.

Pros: excellent pad kee mao, friendly staff

Great Thai food

This restaurant is in the running for the best Thai food in Anchorage. Many dishes are easily made veggie and they have brown rice, which is only one of two Thai restaurants in Anchorage that I know of. They also don't water down the curry sauces like other restaurants do.

Pros: Veggie options, Brown rice, Lime drink

tofu & brown rice options for all curry dishes

After seeing some Thai restaurants in Anchorage without a tofu option on any of their dishes, I decided to try this one because it was listed on Happy Cow and yes indeed they do have tofu options on all their curry dishes.

I ordered the Panang (vegetables) curry with the $1 brown rice option and it was very good. (I asked for mild, and the spice was level was as I expected.)

I also started with the veggie version of the spring roll appetizer, and they asked egg or no egg when I ordered it. And btw it turned out to be a fresh room temperature dish, not the deep fried version that's more common in other Thai restaurants. And since it doesn't need to be fried, it came out much quicker than I'm used to having hot Thai appetizers come out.

The menu does not have an indicator for vegetarian dishes (but then many of the dishes either are vegetarian if you choose tofu or aren't if you choose something else). They do mention at the start of the menu (1) that some ingredients may contain dairy and (2) to tell them if you have an allergies and they'll do their best to accommodate.

The service was good and friendly.

Pros: tofu options, brown rice options, allow choice of spice level

Cons: veggie or vegan dishes not specifically identified
