Slightly confusing concept, but fun and fresh meal - Edit
We got quite confused here. We were aiming for the Shū Shí NánHái 舒食男孩 restaurant which is at No. 69號, Zhonghua Rd, Chishang Township, Taitung County, 958 and appears on Happy Cow, offering a set and a la carte menu.
Read moreWe saw the Chinese letters matching that place on a sign above a shop and went in, but the interior and menu options didn't match up with the pictures or reviews on happy cow. It turns out that this is a second branch of the vegetarian boy restaurant at number 61 on the same street, and we arrived on the day after it opened.
The concept is quite different to the original, however. At this restaurant, you need to select the items you want in your meal from the fridge on the right-hand side of the entrance, then choose some noodles from the left of the window, and hand it all through the window to the cashier where the chefs will take it and transform it into a broth based dish.
We managed to get this bit wrong though and ended up massively over-ordering by accident - we were brought two portions of curry with rice, two broths with vegetables and two plates with the tofu that we'd chosen. We added a token for 'curry rice' because we thought we'd get the vegetables we'd chosen cooked with curry rice, but the curry rice was actually a meal itself with vegetables already included.
There was a vast amount of food for the price we paid, and we managed to get through it all. It was all very nice, though we wished that one of the staff had told us that we were ordering a lot of food.
I'm still not 100% sure we understand the system even now, but the food was very fresh and we enjoyed everything we were brought.
Pros: Fresh ingredients, Wide variety of tofu and fake meat
Cons: Tricky concept for non-Chinese speaker
