Excellent vegan food

We found this place by accident after 3 weeks of average food.
The menu had numerous vegan options and the waiter had good knowledge on veganism which had been a struggle throughout our 3 weeks.
My husband and I both had the thali which was excellent. Each dish had it's own distinct flavour and was very well seasoned. There was also plenty of food for the cheap price.
I wish we had found this place sooner as we would have definitely visited on more occasions.

Pros: Excellent food, Numerous vegan options, Helpful staff

Cons: A little dark in the restaurant

Best Vegan food in Thamel

I wonder if this place has moved, as it's no longer in a basement as reported in some of these reviews; it's on the second floor now (but the address here is correct). Sree Lal serves delicious Indian (including South Indian) food, and I found that the staff here have the best understanding of veganism of all the restaurants I tried in Kathmandhu (except of course for the must-visit vegan restaurant Yeok Tek). The Indian owner has worked in restaurants around the world, including Japan, before settling down in Nepal with his family. It's also very reasonably priced. I highly recommend eating here while in Thamel. They also have simple, well-priced guest rooms above the restaurant.

Pros: great food, low prices, good understanding of veganism

i went to shree lal a few times, mainly because it was a five minute walk from my hotel, and the staff was very friendly. the food is just okay, nothing special. there are a decent amount of vegan items, and they're labeled on the menu.

Pros: staff, location

Cons: not all vegan, okay food

Great food, service and value in Thamel

It's worth putting in some effort to get to Shree Lal! Though the restaurant is in the basement of a building on Thamel Marg(look out for the yellow sign above the doorway), the food and service easily make up for the not-so-nice location. We ordered the big and mini meal deals, and both were excellent, with a variety of traditional Nepalese/Indian dishes in addition to rice and fresh chapati. It was also nice to see the signs assuring patrons that the vegetables are washed with iodine - certainly not something to take for granted in Kathmandu, and big relief for tourists worried about getting sick. Our server was so nice, spoke great English and understood and accommodated our request for vegan food. On top of everything, the generous, healthy and filling meal with two liters of water only ended up being a few hundred rupees (less than 10 dollars). A great find in Kathmandu!

Pros: Delicious food, Good Service, Great Value

Cons: Location

nice thali

they have a great thali and nice mini meals (if you are less hungry.
but they just increased the prices on the menu a few days ago and the thali went from 175rs without tax to 200rs without tax. tax is 10%. the mini meal is at 150rs up from 120rs without tax. still cheap for thamel i guess
the owners are lovely and the staff very friendly.
the food gives you the feeling of home-cooked food, without all the oily gravy.

Pros: quiet, friendly staff, great food

Cons: price increase, no sharing on thali

Cheapest and most delicious food in Kathmandu!

This is the best place to eat in Kathmandu, and we ate here almost every night during our stay!
Their One Person Big Set Meal is a total bargain at about 175Rs and comes with pudding (banana) too! All the curries taste so good and there is poppadom and bread with it too! If you eat here once, you will be back!
The staff are really sweet as well, not a bad word to say about the place.
This restaurant was in our lonely planet guide; so very easy to find. When you are on the street look up for their yellow sign. Walk through the corridor and downstairs to the restaurant.

Pros: taste, price, staff

Cons: none!

Awesome Vegan Food

This is a truly wonderful vegetarian restaurant. And if you ask, the staff are happy to convert any dish that isn't vegan to vegan if possible. A wonderful choice of mouthwatering Indian dishes. The tofu sheek kebabs are divine (well all the food is good). We liked it so much that we ate here nearly every night when staying in Kathmandu. The Daal is one of the best I have ever tasted. The Rajma and Chana dishes are wonderful. And it is great to find vegan naan and parantha bread! Highly recommended and great value!!!

Pros: Mouthwatering food, Value for money, Friendly and large restaurant

Cons: None!
