As Delicious as it is Lovely

This is a meal I will remember, and not just because it’s one of the first dining out experiences I’ve had in over a year of lock down! The sushi is just as wonderful in one’s mouth as it is to one’s eyes. Such beautiful presentation!
My favorite was the Perfect Alibi special role was perhaps my favorite with great mushrooms and a ginger shoyu tomato that was just so perfectly prepared and delicate and flavorful; who would have thought a little tomato could be so incredibly special and exciting!! Really, it was that good. Everything I tried was fabulous. Being partial to mushrooms, I also particularly loved the Shizen Shiitake with a delicate shredded tofu stuffing that complemented the mushrooms perfectly.
The service was also excellent, and they managed to make even dining on the sidewalk a special experience, with nice extra touches like bringing out planters (we were there as they set things up). The inside looked like a lovely space too, I would love to eat there when it’s possible again!
Highly recommend and high on my list of favorites and return wish lists!

Pros: Gorgeous, inventive, delicious food, Plants are the star of the cooking, Great service and space

Whenever I have a guest in town, this is where you'll find me

Shizen is one of my fav restaurants in SF so disclaimer, this review is full-on stan. TL:DR: everything is as delicious as it looks!

Shizen plates beautifully which you taste in every bite, especially in their Specialty Rolls, whether it's a traditional vegan sushi interpretation like the Proud Peacock or something cheekier like the Surprise Ending (the lucky person who gets the extra wasabi hidden under the beet, shoots the sake in the middle). You can spend your entire meal on this section (I have!) but on your second and repeated visits, branch and check out other offerings like their gyoza, katsu, or poke.

I can't rave enough about this place. Whenever I have a guest in town, you know where to find me.

Best restaurant in SF

Being able to get ramen to go from here has been one of the nice things to come out of the lockdown period. It's a perfect comfort meal. Be sure to get the spicy garlic option. It's not very spicy at all, just rich and flavorful.

I used to order both ramen and a roll or two to make the trip worthwhile, but an order of ramen is definitely enough for a meal for one, and quite reasonably priced.

The rolls are fantastic too, a bit more of a splurge but great to try a bunch to share with friends. If you're a vegan visiting the Bay Area and only have time to visit one place, this should be the one.

The sushi tasted really good! I would definitely come back here and recommend it to everyone! It was a little bit more on the pricier side, but in my opinion it’s totally worth it! The staff was also really sweet :)

The absolute best

I dream of when I can get Shizen again. Never know what to order because everything is THAT amazing, but it’s comforting to know you can’t make a single mistake with anything you order.

amazing vegan sushi, a must try at SF

This is the only vegan restaurant I know with a Michelin star. The eggplant sushi is incredible! Everything is delicious. An absolute must try if you're in the area.

Good vegan sushi

The sushi was really nice, for me it was a bit too extravaganza. The basic sushi are way better in my opinion.

Cons: Expensive

Phenomenal Vegan Sushi

The vegan sushi here is out of this world!! Unique combinations and incredible flavour!! On par with Shojin in LA. We tried Open Invitation, Boddy and Soul, and Colonel's Pipe. Everything was phenomenal!! I am really eyeing that Spicy Garlic Miso Ramen-- the photos look amazing!! The simple classic vegan rolls are a good price, the Speciality Rolls are pricier because they are special😄loaded with goodness. They are only doing take out at the moment-- no dine in, no delivery, they aren't affiliated with any delivery services-- it might not be so convenient unless you're right in the neighbourhood. There aren't any parks around for a nice picnic, very urban area. However you can manage, you won't be disappointed!!

Best vegan sushi

Best vegan sushi I’ve had in my life. Pricey but worth it. Make sure to get there at least an hour before they open to avoid any long lines.

Better Late Than Never

Running thru Google Photos and stumbled upon a visit to Shizen in the Mission SF back in '18. Better late than never. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Got their spicy tofuna roll and their spicy miso ramen. It was a great reminder what sushi-ramen bar taste and cost because it replicated both....taste and co$t. Lol But still a 5 star restaurant, nonetheless.

Cons: Cost as much as a sushi-ramen bar

Favorite Restaurant in SF

I've only been to Shizen once, on a trip to visit San Francisco, but I can say without question- it is my favorite restaurant in the entire city. I can also say, without question, it was the best meal I had in all of 2019. And I dined out a lot in 2019. When I went vegan last year, sushi was something I knew I would miss. No longer, will I miss it. We will be moving to the region later year and I will be returning to Shizen, as soon as I can.

Pros: Amazing Food, Nice People, Cozy Environment

Cons: Long Wait (it's still worth it!!!), Expensive (it's still worth it!!!)

This place was really hyped up for us but honestly was just as good as everyone said. The special rolls are amazing! I will be back the next time we’re in SF!

Pros: Innovative food , Nice vibe

Cons: Pushy waiters, it’s hard to relax, Hard to get a seat (used Yelp online waitlist)

Best vegan sushi in the Bay Area

This is one of our favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Everything is just soo good. We love the Ramen and the specialty sushi rolls. They also have changing desserts which are always super delicious. I can highly recommend this place if you're looking for good vegan sushi.

Pros: Everything is very delicious , Nice vibe , Cucumber water😄

Cons: Sometimes longer wait times, Some of the tables are very close to each other , A bit pricey but worth every cent

Best Vegan Sushi

Cute ambiance, I have loved coming here since they opened but it has become harder and harder to dine here since there is always a huge wait time and reservations! Wish they would open a second local 😍

Pros: Lots of sushi variety, Tasty drinks

Cons: WAIT TIMES (+2 hours at times)

Everything's a hit! Wow!

I have tried about half the menu by now and everything is super delicious and the presentations are artisanal crafts, visually stunning, to be out done solely by the flavor explosions in every bite!
Use their waitlist app and beat the line.

Holy crow!

So amazing! Waits can be long so make a Yelp reservation with about two hours as a lead time, but it is so, so worth it. Come hungry and come often!!!
