Delicious Food - Edit
A lot of vegan dishes ir dishes that can be altered to be vegan. Staff is very friendly and welcoming, explains the dishes and understands the concept of veganism. Cute cat is a frequent visitar and joined us on a seat Next to us. 🥰 Must try: mushroom croquette, fermented tofu, papaya salad and fried noodles.

Takes credit cards since Oct 2025 - Edit
The lady immediately asked whether we were vegetarian/vegan. While some people in Japan were reluctant or uncertain about vegan or vegetarian requirements, this lady seems confident about what our dietary choices mean. She was very understanding and helpful with our questions and gave us recommendations so our food turned great even with alterations.
Read moreIt was delicious. And a great recommendation because the nearby vegan place is very unreliable with its opening hours (closed on a Monday? Closed early on a Tuesday.. etc.)
Pros: The fat cat, The atmosphere, The hand-drawn menu

Fantastic little izakaya - Edit
What a wonderful find this place is! We saw their cat dart across the road and up the stairs before we found the place. It’s on the second level (opposite the vending machines) and then through a hallway with a blue curtain. The lovely woman behind the bar was too happy to help us with what was vegan and also veganise some things that weren’t vegan on the menu. There are lots of delicious and flavourful options. Everything we had was awesome and fresh. They serve a complimentary snack when you buy a drink too!

Wonderful! - Edit
Turns out Tamatebako, just a few doors down, is closed on Wednesdays. So I came here to Shimabukuro, as it was the closest. And wow!!!
Read moreThe only reason I've not given five stars is that they're reserved for vegan places.
Lovely little place, super friendly woman who speaks English, friendly clientele.
She was more than happy to make suggestions and veganise what she could. And there were more options than I'm used to having!
The highlight was fried peanut tofu. It's hard to describe... The texture of the tofu is almost like melted brie or mozzarella, but obviously way better and no cheesy taste. I also had Okinawan shallots and delicious noodles.
Highly recommended!!
Pros: The food - superb, The cozy, friendly atmosphere, The cat (I regret not snapping a photo of her!)

Shimabukuro Izakaya - Edit
It is one of the best experiences I’ve had at a restaurant ❤️ it’s a small place but it’s intimate and the people there are friendly, & fun ( including their regulars!) and love sharing their delicious food. Very accommodating with making things veggie. They only take Japanese cash ONLY. Their bean sprout, garlic, chive dish was soo good and their green papaya salad. Lastly their 3 herb tempura was delicious. We will definitely come back.

Delicious, traditional Okinawan food in cozy setting, best service - Edit
We had a delicious dinner for our mixed group of vegetarians and omnivores. The staff are familiar with different dietary needs and are very accommodating. They also speak good English which helps. The decor is cozy and casual, detailed. It’s a small restaurant. 3 tables and a bar. Our kids loved the ketchup noodles and tofu veg. We were asked that all the adults order one drink (have had this happen before in Okinawa). Twisted our arm so we had an Orion draft with dinner. Lovely meal. Would gladly return. Would have given 5 stars if we could.

Great place and tasty food - Edit
I was driving for a few hours searching for a vegan place that was actually open. At last I found this gem. It was already late and I wanted to take food out. When I entered there was some confusion about the name, because the name of the restaurant is Shimabukro. The owner speaks good English. We had a very nice personal conversation. You can order meat, fish, vegetarian and upon request vegan. So I ordered two dishes. Both were very tasty and nice. I absolutely recommend this place!
