Little gem in the middle of nowhere

After a rainy day at Mt. Aso we decided to go there for lunch. Our Japanese language skills are limited, however, it was still possible for the owner to understand us and she double-checked that we don't want to have any fish or meat ingredients (katsuobushi). They prepared us a delicious japanese tofu set meal with regional ingredients. Each part of this meal was really good and we enjoyed the atmosphere of this traditional restaurant.

Simple dish but oh so yummy

This sweet tofu restaurant wasn't listed yet, but we were curious to see if they had any vegan options. Even though it's not on their menu they can customise the spring and summer meal to leave out dashi (fish broth) - which wil leave you with a nice meal, even without the miso soup and little yellow sauce dish. The main ingredient of these dished is (obviously) soy (beans, puree, tofu, pudding), delicous soy everything.

While eating they provided free green tea, plus refills and were kind enough to give us a small discount for the dish they left out from our custom meal. I know custom meals isn't ideal, but really it is the best in this area if you don't want to cook for yourself.

Staff was very friendly and understanding. Also reconfirmed about dashi, just to be sure. We did talk to them in Japanese so maybe prepare flash cards, just in case.

Pros: customised vegan dish, understanding, friendly staff, nice, local restaurant

Cons: might not speak English (we don't know)
