Removed all vegan options from menu - Edit
The staff explained that they have removed all their vegan options from the menu. The really lovely woman in the kitchen came out and asked us what we could eat, and then made us a tomato pasta dish that was not on the menu - but I would not suggest coming here if you’re expecting the “plenty of vegan options” people talk about here in their reviews.
Read more-important note, we communicated in Japanese what we could eat, if you’re not confident in your speaking skills I suggest steering clear of here altogether.

Nice vegan option 1500¥ - Edit
August 2025 they have 2 vegan/ vegetarian options depending what noodles you choose. I had veg curry, but you can get ramen with vegan or vegetarian nudles

Vegan noodle soup option - Edit
My experience was very different to the previous commenter's.
Read moreI suspect there must have been some miscommunication going on. Make sure to tell them that you need something vegetarian/vegan, the usual options are all with animal products. They will prepare something specifically for you.
They even made sure to tell us that a noodle option we picked contained egg so that we could choose something else. They speak English and everyone is super kind.
The soup they prepared tasted good, I was happy to get vegan food out here!

No good for vegans or veggies really - Edit
I came here after reading the other positive reviews and struggling to find vegan food in Zao Onsen, but there are no veggie options here. Even the veggie curry and soup had fish. The rice came with shrimp on top. They at least tried to help by removing the bacon.
Read morePros: They tried to cater for us by removing some meats
Cons: No veggie options

Full of love! - Edit
Shiba Mama is such a genuinely wonderful human, and you can feel the love in the way she acts and the food she cooks. She has an English menu and was able to make one of the soups vegan, as well as a salad. She even offered to make a special vegan green curry just for me on my final day!! It was amazing! I ate there all 3 days I was in Zao Onsen and cannot recommend it enough!!
Read morePros: Shiba Mama is warm, welcoming, and wonderful!, Able to have one-three vegan options, Delicious food - you can feel the love in it!
Cons: Most options not veganizable , Limited hours (not as listed on Google or HC), Hours 11:30-16:00 when I was there

Delicious udon and understanding staff - Edit
The options are not clearly marked vegan, but when we asked staff what can we eat if we are vegan they offered to veganize udon or the salad bowl. The udon was delicious so we ordered it every day throughout our stay in Zao.

Pros: Accommodating, Delicious and warm meal, Cosy
Cons: More options would be great
