South Melbourne Shakahari Too delights the locals

There is no mistaking the Shakahari flavour at this new restaurant. Similar menu, and service..which is just exceptional. The food did not disapoint either. I had an amazing green laksa, which had intricate flavours, topped with tempeh and tofu and green vegies. It was delightful.
It is a little pricey compared to most Melbourne vegetarian restaurants, but well worth it. Especially for a celebratory meal.

Pros: Innovative Food, Plenty of vegan options, service

Always delicious

I have been to both restaurants a few times over the years and the food is always super tasty. The only thing better here is the service. The space is really nice too. Sad they will be closing this branch at the end of the year due to lack of support in the past couple of years. Everything is vegan, possibly except for one dessert wine?

Pros: All menu items are vegan bar 1 dessert wine?, Friendly staff, Lovely space

Cons: A bit on the pricey side

Oh no, I love this one. It’s a lot quieter inside even when it was busy (Carlton tends to amplify noise) oh that’s sad.

Delicious food and fast service

The food was delicious and came really quickly. The avocado entree is amazing! I couldn’t believe how cheap the bill was for such good food. All the service team members were super friendly and gave the place a welcoming atmosphere.

Pros: Great menu, lots of creative dishes, Welcoming and friendly service

Cons: Decor is basic

Probably the best Vegan food I’ve had in Melbourne.

Such delicious food, super friendly staff, really nice decor. And a non vegan would never know the difference. We had the Lasagne and the Satay sticks and omg, I will be back for more soon.

Pros: Lots of vegan options., Super high quality food but not to expensive., Great environment and all round experience.

Cons: It’s not next to my house.

Very enjoyable meal

Despite the Shakahari Too Vegetarian name on the outside of the restaurant, this place is completely vegan (yay!). The staff were super nice and this South Melbourne branch of the restaurant is spacious with tables at the front, the rear and a function area upstairs. I enjoyed the food, particularly the laksa. There's a good variety of food on offer, generally Malaysian-themed.

Close-to-gourmet vegan food!

Absolutely loved the satay and the lasagna was great too. It’s quite pricey but the taste experience was well worth it.

Pros: Super creative

Cons: Expensive

Delicious vegan food with very friendly service

The staff here are very welcoming and helpful and they create a lovely calm space to share a meal with friends or a date. The menu seems to be almost 100% vegan and the options are really varied so there is something for everyone.

Pros: Great service, Good food options

All Vegan!

This restaurant is listed as vegetarian, but the whole food menu is vegan and it states that at the front of the menu. Maybe some of the drinks aren’t vegan? I had the shakahari satay, and my Mum had the shakahari salad (entree but had it as a main). They were both great - especially the satay :) Would have stayed for dessert but unfortunately didn’t have time.

Good dinner out

A nice place to go out for dinner. The satay skewers are my favourite.
Make sure you save room for dessert.

Good vegan option

Even though this place is listed as veggie (because they offer milk in coffee?) the whole menu is vegan. Very helpful folks, gave some good advice. My experience was this, good flavour, good warming food.

Pros: relaxed, friendly

Cons: a bit overpriced?

Disappointing

Food was bland and uninteresting. The dishes all sound great but lack flavour and balance. If you'd have made those dishes at home though you'd be very pleased.

Pros: vegetarian with plenty of vegan options

Cons: somewhat underwhelming

This is fair, but it really depends on what you order, some dishes pop with flavour, the tangy coriander sauce on the tempura avocado is a mouth watering party, and the satay skewers are a rice earthy and nutty flavour experience, but in contrast, other dishes can lack the same wow factor, play it safe and order the two I mention, but the milder dishes will have their fans too.

Great addition too

I've been to the original Shakahari several times but this was our first visit to number Too. A wide ranging choice of Asian fusion on the menu and everything was delicious. The wine list is also vegan and they had some excellent selections. Service was quick and friendly.
Only negative was the atmosphere and decor - lacking in both like a house that you've just moved in to.

Pros: Good choices on menu for food and wine, Friendly service

Cons: Lacking in atmosphere

a bit overpriced...

I so wanted to love this place as it's the closest vegan place to my house.
I had the laksa which was tasty, but it wasn't as good as the Vegie Bar one (which is cheaper too). Then I stupidly paid $15 for a dessert. I thought if it's $15 it would be like a mouthgasm, but it was actually quite strange. I had the tofu caramel which was a take on creme caramel. Looked amazing but just plain weird and so so overpriced!!
I probably won't return, as I think you can get nicer food at better prices elsewhere like Smith & Daughters, Vegie Bar and Urban Projuice.
Service was good, so I feel bad writing this. But I think they need to step it up a bit!

awesome!!

I had the lasagna yomamma (best name btw) and I loved it! Filling, but I wasn't bloated at the end. It was warm and a good size. Came with salad in this amazing dressing with potatoes and carrot yum!!!

Time to spice things up

Well presented food which unfortunately fails to deliver on flavour. Shakari has been serving up the same menu for several years now and the creative juices seem to have stopped flowing.

Pros: Elegant setting, Beautiful presentation

Cons: Bland, Menu needs a refresh

Fresh and Delicious

I happened to be walking down Clarendon street when I saw a sign for Shakahari and notice it was a vegetarian restaurant. I checked out the menus outside and it sounded good so I headed in.

I had a wonderful time and am so glad I went in! The food was fantastic, very fresh and flavorful. I had and recommend both the Green Papaya and the Satay Shakahari. The portions were good sized so I was very full by the time my meal was over. The prices were well within Australia's high range, high but not extravagant.

The service was also great. I didn't catch the names of the waiter or bartender but both were very friendly and helpful.

I will certainly return the next time I'm in Melbourne, thanks for a great time!

Pros: Great food, Friendly and good service

Cons: Expensive, but not too bad by Australia standards

Tasty food and great service

I ate here with another friend so we shared the avocado tempura entree which was delicious. I had the quinoa croquettes as a main and they were very tasty and served with some salad and broccoli. My friend had the moorish rice which had a lot of flavour. We also shared a tofu caramel dessert which was nice and not too sweet. I find the noise levels much better than the Carlton restaurant. The service was efficient and they were happy for us to order dessert after waiting for our main meals to settle. As the previous reviewer mentioned, it is more expensive than some other vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne but it is worth every cent!
