perfect vegan restaurant - this location is good size with indoor and outdoor seating - Edit

Soup bar, salad bar hot entrees bar - all buffet by 3 set plate sizes - 6.90/8.90/10.90 - fill up salad and entrees. Fresh ingredients. Desserts/cakes are sold separately. Good coiffes and drinks. No fresh juices or smoothies. All good tasty food. Some hot entrees can be a little oily but huge variety.

Pros: variety fresh tasty all vegan nice clean seating

Cons: not really - it is all goodness

Something for anybody! - Edit

After several visits at Sattgruen in Essen i can tell that it's quite great.

The diversity and freshness of the dishes is great, pricing is really okay and the staff is friendly. There's lots of space to sit inside and outside and the opening hours are just a blast (i've been there after 10pm or so, still open, still very fresh - very uncommon in Germany if you expect quality food). The location is just in downtown Essen, very close to the central station but not overrun by people because seating and entrance are in a side street of the main shopping street. If you don't finish you can take the remaining food on your plate with you in plastic containers they offer (for free if you ask nicely).

It's not super-cozy but the atmosphere is nice anyway. Although you possibly "stand in queue" the food bears no resemblance to "fast food" because of it's diversity, freshness and overall quality.

If you're in a group and don't know where to go for lunch/ dinner in downtown Essen because everybody's got his*her own taste go there, they serve something for anybody.

Pros: fresh, diversity, everything vegan

Cons: relatively big place, right next to a Vapiano franchise

It's all about choices - Edit

Sattgruen is in the heart of Essen. We were there to visit the theatre and the Christmas market, and were looking for some quick food.
Usually I am the limiting factor for choosing a restaurant, but not in Essen.
We choose Sattgruen to see what it would be like.
You can choose three different plate sizes (small, medium, large) and there are two counters with food you can choose from. The first counter contains the 'salads', or rather, anything not warm/hot, because there is a lot more than just salads to choose from!
The second one is the warm/hot dishes. Pasta, rice, beans, tofu, cauliflower, you name it, it's there.
It's not expensive, and you have a lot of choice (which, for a vegan is not often the case).
I liked it very much, and my non-vegan boyfriend enjoyed his meal as well!

Pros: Choices, Friendly staff, Value for money

Close to train station / central part of town - Edit

Nice buffet with with local favorites gone fine like Brussel sprouts with mustard seeds, red cabbage with cinnamon, etc.

All types of coffee including grain coffee, plus Fritz lemonades, wines...

Three plate sizes that are not weighed like in Switzerland but based on trust (and inspection ;) )

Very hard to find since regular entrance of shopping mall is deserted. Walk around the whole house instead, it's next to 'va piano'.

Pretty large space. Realistic prices.

Very, very good: "No garlic" is clearly labelled.

Pros: very good taste, central in middle of town, huge choice

So delicious! - Edit

Nice restaurant with delicious food. We tried nearly everything on the buffet and most of it was great. We were totally amazed, about how delicious it was.

For dessert we had some walnut-carrot cake, which was like the best cake I've ever had! Fluffy, a bit crunchy and not too sweet!

The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is nice, very light and modern.

Unfortunately I'm living a bit too far away from Essen to go there more often, but I can recommend this place 100 % and I will definitely come back!

Pros: excellent food, friendly staff, nice atomsphere

Mhhhh - Edit

I can recommend this place a 100%. The food I tried was super delicious. The staff was very nice. And the prices are moderate.

The space is very open in the front of the restaurant with high ceilings, huge windows and large wooden tables. There are a couple more places in teh back were you get more of a cosy and darkish feel. You can even sit outside if you like since its located towards an open space - like a mikro park - a green eye in Essens rather grey inner city.

I tried some of everything that looked appealing to me. So I had my platter full of little bits and nibbles, which was a good way to try myself through the menu. There was only one thing that wasn't to my taste, but the rest was all like "gimme more of that".

I also had a huge piece of chocolate cherry cake as a desert and apart from filling me up after my satisfying dinner it was really good. Fluffy, moist, chocolatey, sweet yummyness.

A big yes to Sattgrün (> lush green, while satt also means full)

Pros: excellent food, good athmosphere, nice staff

the best - Edit

Everything I tried was delicious and afterwards I was in a food coma. It is the best place to show non-vegans how good vegan food can be. Because there is a buffet, everybody will find something they'll love.

Pros: incredibly delicious food, nice staff, very good prices

Delicious food - Edit

Located in a quiet side street right in the city centre, Sattgrün offers an amazing vegan buffet!
There are two soups (a small bowl is 4,90 €, a big bowl 6,90 €), several salads and a large selection of warm dishes. The best part is: you can try all of them (if you are very hungry that is). You choose between three plate sizes (small for 5,90 €, regular for 7,90 €, large for 10,90 €) and combine any number of cold and warm dishes. We went for two regular plates and every single dish we tried was delicious. Afterwards I had a (gigantic) slice of coconut cake and a small coffee with almond milk for 6 €. The coconut cake was one of the best vegan cakes I ever tried. And the staff were very helpful as well.
We will definitely be back!

Pros: excellent food, good value, friendly staff
