Interesting food!

I was a bit skeptical because I normally like a good mock meat, but the food was so interesting I didn’t miss it! The maitake flat bread and smashed potato were excellent. So tasty. Also had the caviar with homemade blini and the sea vegetables. The sea vegetables tasted strongly of the ocean. For mains, we ordered the rice and legumes, which had this eggy substitute made from yellow aquafaba. It really tasted eggy. The pasta entree was excellent - shells in a creamy, tangy sauce. I would call this food elevated comfort food.

We also ordered drinks that were unique - what they’re having and the pepper jus. Made for such a good night.

It’s too bad we visited this restaurant on the last day of operations (7/28/19). The server told us the chef is looking for a new space in the NYC area. Keep an eye out for this gem!

Pros: Elevated comfort food, Delicious

amazing food, so impressed!

My husband and I were in the neighborhood and used Happy Cow to find a nearby vegan restaurant. I am so happy we found this place! It was so impressive in every way possible. I've been vegan for 21 years now, and I'm not saying that I have incredibly high standards, but it's been a while since a vegan restaurant impressed me this much.

We showed up at 7pm on a Saturday without a reservation and were able to be seated at the bar. I ordered a glass of wine, which was so good I wrote down the name so I can find it at home. We inquired about the prix fixe menu, which is 5 set items (no choices) at $65 per person, so we decided to order off the menu.

We ordered the olives, asparagus, and spring onion flatbread to start. I was expecting like 5 olives in a tiny dish but we got a whole bowl of olives--very generous portions. The asparagus was beautifully charred and served with a vegan hollandaise and crispy onions.

But the flatbread, holy moly, just get it. It's one of the best dishes I've had in a while, and it won me over because it was definitely not something I would or could make at home. (I cook a lot, so one of my favorite things at a nice restaurant is to have something I can't make myself.) I think the flatbread was phyllo, maybe? Super crispy. Then it was topped with a creamy sauce, which I'm not even sure what it was. On top of that was charred spring onions, maitake mushrooms, and shaved parmesan, which the server told me was made from dehydrated tofu. I got the sense that they made everything in-house, and it was incredibly inventive.

We ordered the charred spring onion main dish, which was somewhat similar to the flatbread, but with croutons instead of the flatbread, and with a smoky tomato flavor to the sauce. Also good, but maybe next time I would not order that with the flatbread because it's so similar.

The service was incredibly attentive, the atmosphere was lovely, and the food was so good, I was really impressed for the first time in a long time. It showed technique and innovation, and they really built the flavors of each dish. Go there asap and enjoy!

Pros: incredible food, attentive wait staff, lovely atmosphere

Cons: nothing bad!

Perhaps the best vegan restaurant in NYC

A refined, almost rustic, oasis of calm, attentive service and delicious vegan food. Chef Champ Jones prepares many an outstanding dish in the most welcoming of settings. This place is just excellent. Try the sunchokes, yuba, flatbreads, pasta, rice beans....

Pros: Creative, flavor-focused, varied cuisine+drinks, Excellent staff, barman, Serene (quiet); unpretentious/sober decor

Cons: Cannot think of anything wrong with this place...
