Not vegan anymore

My husband and I were very excited to try this restaurant on our honeymoon at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort, but were soon disappointed. When we got there, we were informed that it’s changed it’s focus and is now a 24 hour snack bar. We figured there must still be some vegan options on the menu. The only thing listed that wasn’t meat was an eggplant portobello burger and it was brought to us on a bun with real mayonnaise and shoestring fries on the side. We were told that not enough people cared for the vegan option, so they changed directions. The restaurant was beautiful and in a perfect location near the beach, so it really is a shame. I wish we had checked the reviews on here before booking. Seems like it may have been declining for a little while. One positive is we spoke to a very nice concierge, Desiree, who got us in touch with a chef at Sandos and his name was Socrates. He made us a lovely vegan meal. Perhaps if enough people give their feedback, politely, and encourage vegan food, they would change it back?

Pros: Nice concierge and chef tried to make it right

Cons: Not a vegan restaurant , No vegan items on the menu

Very disappointing

We choose to stay at the Sandos Caracol hotel because they promoted themselves as a vegan friendly resort because of this restaurant. It was very disappointing. Food are tasteless and unhealthy, it is very hard to make Mexican food tasteless but they nailed it!
The buffets at the resort have better options for vegans and vegetarians.

Pros: Nice environment, Amazing view

Cons: Tasteless, Unhealthy , Very few options

Sad and sudden decline in menu and quality

My wife and daughter had a great experience in March 2019 at this resort, in large part because of Salvia, with its (then) excellent food. Looks like as recently as Oct 2019, it was still a quality vegan restaurant. As such, we booked a 12-person, 5-day stay at this resort, with about half of those people being vegan. Sorry to report that Salvia is not what it was. Its previous menu is no more, replaced by a very limited selection of mostly deep fried, poorly presented cafeteria-grade small plates. A squishy bbq cauliflower app, a tasteless burger, bland and dry Mac and vegan cheese and uninspired flatbread and a few even less desirable items... tried all during the stay. Several of the menu items where unavailable all week - is suspect they are permanently off menu and they just haven’t bothered to update it. Pretty pissed at the whole situation. Can not recommend and will not return.

Loved the eco resort & Salvia restaurant

We stayed 7 night at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort. We loved this place with All Nature Experiences (snorkeling in the mangrove or cenote, photo tour with a guide, underground maya cooking) and all the wild animals like monkeys, ragoons, coatis and beautiful birds. But the main reason that we chose this hotel was the vegan restaurant Salvia. At Salvia you can choose a 3 course dinner and when you're hungry you can order an extra course (it's all inclusive anyway:) We ended up eating here five evenings and we tried everything except the ponzole soup because they didn't have that this week. Our favourites on the menu are: the pumpkin & bean chili, avocado and portobello tiradito, caprese salad, tortilla soup, the stuffed pepper, tamales, the flautas and the banana bread💗the waitresses were also very nice. We want to go back!

Pros: All vegan, Nice menu, Good service

Cons: Closed 1 day per week

Truly Vegan

If you plan to come to Playa Del Carmen for an all inclusive property please stay in Sandos Caracol as they have a fully vegan all inclusive restaurant.

Limited selection of entre and main course ( bonus dessert ) which lean more towards healthy then being tasty.

Available only for dinner ( evening hours ). Available only for residents/ guests of Sandos Caracol all inclusive, otherwise you will need to buy an expensive daypass to use Sandos services

Pros: Desserts, small portions + all inclusive

Cons: Only Dinner, restrictred to hotel residents

An Amazing Surprise

Salvia labels themselves as vegetarian, but they are actually completely vegan! I was so happy to find this out. If you're ever planning a vacation for the Cancun area, definitely think about booking an all inclusive resort vaca at the Sandos Eco Resort, where this restaurant is located! The servers here were beyond nice and the atmosphere was amazing, right on the beach! Don't be afraid to order a starter, entree, and dessert for yourself, the portions are small. Also, you're on vacation, eat, drink, and live it up! Everything I tried here was so amazing.

Pros: vegan, dessert, ocean view

You have to be a resort guest to go to this restaurant. Fortunately, figuring this out for us was no harder than walking about 75 yards down the beach from our hotel. Wouldn't want to plan on going here for a meal from somewhere farther away, though. The hotel we stayed at, Le Reve, is worth booking for the great vegan food alone...plus it's a really nice property. You have to be a guest to eat there, too.
