Best Vegan Food in Nebraska! - Edit
We live in Omaha and somehow just ate here for the first time recently and OMG. If you haven’t tried it, you have to. Even if you aren’t vegan, the onion rings, crab rangoon nachos, and philly are all amazing! Can’t wait to go back!

Super friendly staff at this little gem - Edit
I really liked how friendly the staff was at this restaurant. The food was great and the portions were super large. My partner and I were able to get two meals each out of our food. I got the Monster Mac & Cheese which comes with fried brussels sprouts and an onion ring and I was very satisfied with my meal. This was a surprisingly good option for dinner on our road trip to Nebraska! Definitely worth checking out if you’re passing through Lincoln.

Food so good you’ll think “this is vegan?!” - Edit
The gold standard of vegan comfort food. I’ve had Rutabagas several times and it’s always on point. I love the cowgirl burger with tots and the ruta-bangin’ nachos. Seriously, just look at this picture…that’s vegan?! HECK YES. I’LL HAVE ANOTHER. THANK YOU.
Read moreRutabagas is incredible. Not only are they cooking up some of the best vegan food I’ve ever had, they’re actively building up the vegan community in Lincoln by hosting cooking classes, special brunches and animal activist events. This business deserves all the love and support. 💚

Nice to see an entirely vegan restaurant around here, which is a pretty uncommon site in this part of the country. Very good onion rings.

Enjoyed by everyone, even my cattle rancher friend! - Edit
Was delighted to find an all-vegan option in downtown Lincoln. We ordered the Buddah bowl, Buffalo Chick'n sandwich, cheesesteak, and a side of fried pickles - all were well-enjoyed. We did takeout (only one outdoor table).

During our 3 days in Nebraska, we ate at Rutabagas twice.
Read moreTrip 1:
Lunch: I got the 'Buddah Bowl' since it was the most veg-heavy item on the menu. I liked it, but I am NOT a big fan of Brussel sprouts. I wished I had requested more kale instead. Also, it was a *bit* heavy on sauce for me. We also ordered a small portion of tater tots which were served with tasty dipping sauce. Even without the sauce, they have a great crunch & nice seasoning. My S.O. ordered a yummy (but messy) gyro special.
Trip 2:
Brunch: I had planned to once again order the 'Buddah Bowl' (with modifications). But, was told the regular menu wasn't available--it was a smaller brunch menu (not on the website). Disappointing since I really wanted a good amount of veggies (travel can diminish veggie intake!). I asked if it would be possible to get some sautéed greens on the side. The person taking the order said she didn't think so. Luckily, a lovely young woman from the kitchen overheard us and said she had some dressed kale I could have on the side. I ordered the Smothered Potatoes and they were heaven....sauce, sour cream, avocado, etc. on top of cubed potatoes. SOOOOOOOOOOOO good! As usual, my S.O. ordered a breakfast burrito....he was VERY jealous of my dish. The dressed kale was a yummy palate cleanser.
We also got a cinnamon roll for take-out. While visiting Homestead National Historic Park (super interesting!) later, we split the cinnamon roll--it was honestly the best vegan cinnamon roll I've had. Poofy, but plenty of cinnamon & icing.
During both visits, we spoke to the owner who is really nice. I asked her to use her influence in the Lincoln community to convince local restaurants to add vegan breakfast options. She mentioned that she specifically doesn't have a salad on the menu (since it's meant to be comfort food), but the 'Buddah Bowl' is meant to be a warm salad. I told her that I wished she DID have a salad!!😄
One great thing she mentioned is that tips are shared with the entire staff. It's something she learned from working in restaurants herself.
Pros: Great vibe, friendly owner, Smothered potatoes & tater tots, Comfort food twist on vegan favorites
Cons: No salad!

SO GOOD - Edit
I was in Lincoln for a wedding and was excited to see a vegan restaurant. I was beyond happy with everything!! The place is super cute which is nice. But the food even better. The vegan burger was maybe my fave veg burger I’ve ever had. The double banger is sooo good (I’d buy it by the bucket if I could). And the chocolate chip cookies were amazing too. The only thing I didn’t love was the fried pickles (instead of pickle chips fried they fried whole long spears). Wish there were a Rutabagas near me!!

Not only does this place have amazing food, but the owner, Sara, is a gem and very inviting. Everything here tastes fresh, and I'm OBSESSED with their cashew ranch. Stop in on Sundays for brunch, too! You definitely won't regret it. Highly recommend coming here for a quick yet delicious stop for 100% plant-based food.

Quick stop for food - Edit
Delicious desserts and friendly service. We did their online ordering for a set pickup time and unfortunately, it seemed like the food had been sitting on the counter for some time as the fried cauliflower breading was soft and was missing a crunchy, even though we showed up at our pickup time and ate our food shortly after. We’ll probably be back to try other dishes since it’s one of the few vegan restaurants in the area and the rest of the menu sounds good, but weren’t wowed by this visit.

Lincoln’s best vegan restaurant - Edit
Let me begin by saying that the owner, Sara, is one of the loveliest people on this planet, and she’s the highlight of every Rutabaga’s excursion. Every meal tastes like a home-cooked delight, and I am seldom disappointed. My favorite items are the patty melt and the Philly cheesesteak that was recently on special. The cocktails are excellent as well. Rutabaga’s has a points-based reward system that allows you to earn free food and drinks.
