Limited and pricey

The venue is a really traditional quayside pub. It sits at the end (or beginning depending on your start point) of the Wivenhoe trail from colchester. That makes it a great stop point for some food and drink along your walk!
Take a breath, close your eyes, and you can almost transport yourself back a couple of hundred years and imagine a bar full of drunken sailors, some contraband, and perhaps even a bar wench!
Inside is dark and traditional with a small bar and a few tables. Outside, there are two beer gardens, one at the front overlooking the Colne River and a "secret" beer garden out back. I didn't visit the back beer garden, but I did see a sign for it whilst taking a trip to the lavatories!
Because of its location, it gets busy when the weather is nice.

So let's move on to the menu and food.
What's important to remember is that, despite its local and independent feel, this is a chain pub. It's part of the green king brewery chain. You need to expect pre-prepped meals and not much scope for deviation from the menu.
Vegan choices were limited. From the "light bites" menu there are 2 choices: chickenless tacos and corn ribs. Sadly my first choice was unavailable leaving me with the corn ribs. Essentially £7 for half a dozen very small corn on the cob segments with a sweet chilli sauce at the bottom of the bowl, sprinkled with spring onions and red chilli. It was tasty enough but I left the table feeling hungry for more lunch and wished that the chip shop in the village had been open.

If you have gone for mains rather than lunch there are 3 options... more of the corn ribs but with "mixed grains", a mushroom chilli which actually sounded quite nice and chickenless katsu curry (which again they did not have any in stock). A beyondmeat burger also features.

It's not bad, but it's also not great for the price paid.

Friendly staff and separate vegan menu

There's a separate menu for vegans but there are also vegan items not on the menu so make sure to look at both! Food was just OK but with very limited options in the area it was a nice meal! Staff are also very friendly and overall food was not that expensive especially if you took advantage of the deals
