Great vegan okonomiyaki! - Edit
Delicious, healthy and filling! The owner showed us the two options that could be made vegan - was fun to watch him cook everyone's orders right in front of us. He cooked our vegan okonomiyaki entirely separately from the others, so no accidental mix ups.
Read moreWatch out if you're ordering the vegetarian version - as mentioned in another review below this includes the fish sauce that is used on all the general menu items.

Fishy taste - Edit
Finally had the chance to taste the famous Vegatarian Okonomiyaki at Roku, and we were so excited while waiting!
Read moreI ordered one of the courses without meat, and said I was vegetarian. It was no problem.
When the food finally came, it was the most fishy flavour we’ve had in years. I don’t know how this place has so many good reviews? Maybe we were unlucky? I understand that cross contamination could be problem, but this tasted like it had been soaked in fish oil… We couldn’t finish our meal, and are considering only eating at vegan places from now on to avoid another similar situation.
I’m truly very sad to say this, but we were so excited and looking forward to a somewhat authentic japanese experience, and our night basically got ruined at this place…
Pros: Authentic teppanyaki, English speaking chef
Cons: Fishy taste, more than just cross contamination

Veggie options but would be hard going for vegans - Edit
An okonomiyaki stand in the famous okonomimura food hall. Vegan options aren’t advertised but the chef speaks a bit of English and I was able to ask for vegetarian (with egg) It’s cooked alongside the meat pancakes with the same implements but he does take care to keep them separate. These pancakes aren’t to my taste personally and I would think without the egg would be pretty dry. But a good option for those wanting to try a regional specialty in atmospheric surroundings. (Albeit entirely full of tourists!)

Cons: The pancakes! (But that’s personal preference)

Sehr lecker - Edit
Echt super!

Fun experience and yummy food - Edit
We struggled a little to find it as there is no signage downstairs! Enter Okinimura and take the lift to the 4th floor and follow the hallway until the end! I do recommend giving this place a try- the staff were so so friendly and it was a lot of fun. Only rating 3 stars as I didn’t love the flavour of the sauce and noodles as much (but I do think this is personal taste- nothing they did wrong)

Got the veg version versus the vegan, and was truly delicious. To find the shop, get off the elevator on the th floor, turn right and walk around the corner. The name Roku is written in English on their blue flag.

Great experience - Edit
Went here yesterday, and we were very lucky to be seated pretty quickly!
Read moreI asked about vegan options, and they told me what can be veganized (no milk, no egg, no meat/fish). What is really great here, is that you can see them preparing the food. They use a seperate egg-free batter for the okonomiyaki and made sure the grill was cleaned and that my food didn't come in contact with the other okonomiyaki that contained meat. They even used seperate equipment (except for the grill of course)!
It was really nice to see, I appreciate how accomodating they were!
The okonomiyaki was also very good. Apparently not having a fried egg on top really lets the sauce penetrate the entire dish through the noodles, which makes it even better than the non-vegan version! (according to my non-vegan friends)
I can only recommend going here when you are in Hiroshima. The only downside I can think of, is that I imagine you could have to wait for a while if you are a larger group, since this is a pretty small restaurant.

Hiroshima Style okonomiyaki - Edit
This Restaurant was really good. The whole building is full with okonomiyaki places, but from what I saw, this is the only one offering vegan okonomiyaki in the building. They know vegan and vegetarian and also made sure to ask If different ingredients were okay. Everything is cooked on the same plate, but they cleaned it pretty well, seperated my order from the non veggie dishes and also used extra utensils. The vegetarian and vegan options aren't labelled, just tell them you want vegan and they will tell you which options can be veganized. They were really friendly and it was a nice experience.

Easy to get vegan options - Edit
This is located in Okonimura, which has 3 floors of outlets selling Okonomkyaki and has a very cool vibe. Would have liked to have tried one at random but most signs are in Japanese so took the safe route of the Happy Cow recommended one. Owners were really helpful, spoke English and asked what I could and couldn’t eat. Cooked veggie option separately and used separate knives (not sure this was 100% adhered to). Also cooked meat right in front of where you’re sat (if that isn’t your thing).

Great okonomiyaki! - Edit
My non-veg husband tried mine and said he liked the vegan one even better than his non-vegan one. The chef is awesome and definitely knows what vegan is. I didn’t ask for this but he did clean off the grill really well before making the vegan one, as well as use separate utensils to make it (I didn’t really see if he does that for every order anyway, though; it’s possible he does).
Read moreThe chef pointed out two menu items that he could make vegan (rather than asking what toppings I wanted). I was okay with this though and it made the ordering process easy.

Delicious and fun! - Edit
The chef completely understood veganism. We both got spring onion okonomiyaki. Cooked right in front of us (so we're meat and egg ones though!) and tasted very fresh. The sauce was absolutely delicious - very salty! The hot plate keeps the food very hot! The lemon and the lime highballs were very refreshing and easy to drink! The orange "juice" was just an artificial drink out of a plastic bottle though.

Dinner and a show - Edit
Worth it! This was an amazing find in Hiroshima, and we were very lucky to be able to be seated as there were 9 reserved seats! The chef/owner is super friendly, speaks enough English and knows what vegan is. It was incredible to watch him cook the food on the hot plate, and we were able to eat it from there too. The sauce was delicious. Honestly, it was an incredible experience. I would defo recommend anyone who wants to experience an okonomiyaki on a plant based diet. Thank you for having us!

Best dining experience ever! - Edit
Literally couldn’t take my eyes off the cool dude chef who made Okonomiyaki for everyone at the grill simultaneously. It clearly wasn’t his first rodeo! The cooking is fast, the eating is pretty fast too. Atmospheric, relaxed and an incredible, authentic experience. He understood I was vegan, specified no egg etc, and used separate utensils. (Did handle meat and fish and the hand washing was a bit of a token gesture but I was ok with that). As a lone traveller it was a bit daunting going up to the fourth floor of a place where I had no idea what to expect, but honestly take the plunge. It’s well worth it. I paid £6.50 for the best meal I’ve had in Japan.
Read moreNB- the building is opposite an underground car park. When you get to the 4th floor find the ladies toilet- it’s directly opposite.

Finally, a veggie okinomiyaki! The wait was long and the meal service took over an hour, so be prepared to wait. But the chef used a special vegetarian batter and let me customize the toppings. If you want to avoid cross contamination (mentioned below) just ask for it to be served on a plate instead of from the grill. He used separate spatulas for the veggie ones.

Great Okonomiyaki and an accomodating owner - Edit
First off, this place IS on the 4th floor of Okonomimura. The signs at ground floor don't list it but it is up there! Take the lift up and go round the corner, the sign is in English and Japanese so it's easy to find.
Read moreOur food here was great and it was really nice to get a proper Okonomiyaki bar experience. The owner spoke enough English that I would be confident you could order a vegan meal in English. We speak some japanese and mostly ordered in Japanese on our trip. There were a few ingredients that the owner double-checked with us that was appreciated. Additionally, he used seperate tools for our meal compared to the meat and cooked them at other ends of the grill.
If you're very strict about cross contamination then be aware everything is cooked on one big teppanyaki grill. I personally didn't mind this as our food was still seperate but just a heads up if this will bother you.
Personally, I am vegetarian so my meal had cheese and egg. Flavour was great and I really enjoyed it. My partner is vegan and had an appropriate version, she also enjoyed hers.
Pros: Accomodating vegan changes, Food was delicious , Owner was very friendly and happy to chat

The tastiest, but also unfairest, okonomiyaki - Edit
Taste-wise, this was my personal favorite of the three vegan okonomiyaki we tried in Hiroshima. Filling, perfectly balanced flavors.
Read moreThe only thing I didn’t like was the unfair pricing— there’s nothing already vegan on the menu, so they suggested we order something minus 2 ingredients and adding 3. Fine, but at the end they charged us full price for the meat-free okonomiyaki PLUS three toppings. Seems unfair to charge us full price for an okonomiyaki without meat, but welcome to Japan. #Veganuary
