6 Bridge St, Whitby, England, YO22 4BG

Serves meat, vegan options available. A chip shop which fries in vegetable oil. There are plenty of chip shops in the town but this is the only one that uses oil suitable for vegans. Uses a separate fryer for the chips. Has a takeaway and also a restaurant. The restaurant is more expensive but worth it if the weather's bad. If the sun is shining, grab a takeaway and have a walk along the seafront. Dog friendly. Note: they don't specifically state that they cater to vegans, so be aware that the staff may not be aware of options. Open Mon-Thu 11:00am-6:30pm, Fri 11:00am-7:30pm, Sat 11:00am-8:00pm, Sun 11:00am-7:30pm. Opens at 11am every day.

Pea Fritter - Edit

First time eating here, the staff were polite and helpful. I was assured the pea fritter was vegan as long as you took the gluten free batter. Mushy peas in batter what's not to like?

Pros: vegan options, polite friendly staff, great locatio

Cons: Parking in Whitby is a nightmare.

Be careful - Edit

Went here looking forward to sausage and chips but was told that they fry the sausage in the same oil as the fish the only thing separate was the chips. Had to make do with mushy peas and a side salad. Sounds familiar !

Pros: Good chips

Cons: Not very many vegan choices , Small portion

Only veg oil place in Whitby - Edit

Lots of places advertising "traditional" chippie fare. Aka - Animal fat. As there were lots of veggies + vegans in our group this place was sourced to get dinner. It was asked if the veggie sausage was vegan and today we got an answer in the affirmative. It was very tasty and reasonably priced. Good dinners by the beach was had by all, just watch out for the seagulls and DON'T feed them!!!

Pros: Fry in veg oil separately from meat, Close to the beach

Good Whitby Chippy - Edit

We got the veggie sausage and chips here which were confirmed as vegan but only if fried without batter. They were OK but not great, too "vegetably" for me. However the chips are really chunky and lovely and even better if served with gravy which is vegan. The staff have a sheet which lists all allergens and are happy to consult it for you if asked. A nice place.

Pros: nice chips, friendly staff, vegan items

Cons: meat is served

Chips - Edit

Chips were lovely but when I asked about the vegan sausage mentioned by other users one of the boys working said the vegetable sausages aren't vegan. He seemed quite unsure but I didn't get it just in case.

Pros: Cheap and good chips

Cons: Unsure workers and average service

Great chip shop with vegan and gluten free options - Edit

Have visited a few times now. I believe it's the only chippy in Whitby to fry in oil and to fry chips and non meat items separately. The battered vegan sausages are amazing, they also sell a mushy pea fritter, a cheese fritter and a bean burger. They can do anything in gluten free batter too. They fry everything to order in the take away section so it took a little while for our whole group to be served but it was well worth the wait!

Pros: Friendly, helpful staff, Variety of veggie/vegan options

Share some greased tea with me - Edit

Well known amongst locals, tourists and members of the goth community who generally frequent the town throughout the year but particularly in late April and late October during the fantastic Goth Weekends as THE only fish and chip shop in Whitby to fry purely in vegetable oil. They also fry meat and non meat items separately unlike some chippies I know. We've been coming here for years, the chips are fabulous and they also do battered vegan sausages but I am yet to try these. I think I will rectify this misdemeanour very soon. I'm drooling at the prospect already. I always make sure I get a packet of chips from here drizzled in vinegar and spattered with a fair sprinkling of salt before partaking in a leisurely walk around town. We don't deep fry or use salt at home, so it's an acceptable vice I think. Obviously, there are meat products on display at the premises which may be disconcerting but I feel this is something which unfortunatley cannot be avoided particularly in a typical seaside English chippy.

Pros: lovely chips, vegan options, location

Cons: meat on premises
