Fresh Odango - Edit
I've had many fond memories coming to this noodle/dango shop often whenever I visit Yamadera. They are a family-run shop that offers tempura, soba, imoni (potato stew), and sweet dango.
Read moreMost recently, my friend and I came here for a quick snack while waiting for the train back to Sendai. The dining area oversees the river and is a beautiful spot to stay away from the elements.
Menu wise - I did order their cold soba as well as two types of dango - garlic miso and of course, zunda mochi. They didn't have a dipping sauce that wasn't made with traditional fish dashi, so I ended up using a mix of soy sauce and the soba water, which actually wasn't too bad. The dango here was fresh, chewy, and delicious.
The staff and my friend assured me that the zunda was vegan but after seeing the ingredients list on some take-home zunda products, I'm not 100% sure. It's at least vegetarian for sure.
I'm glad this shop has stuck around over the years especially through the pandemic. With so few restaurants in the area, I'm glad that this is still around to at least offer an option for vegans.
Pros: Vegetarian options that can be made vegan, English Menu
Cons: Limited options overall
