Delicious food, friendly people - Edit
I drive through Penola regularly and have always struggled to find good vegan options, but this time I stopped by the Red Shack Cafe and was thrilled to discover that they offer some really amazing food for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free customers.
Read moreThe chef and owner, Ian, was super friendly and explained to me that the vegan options change regularly and therefore aren't always listed on the printed menus, but all you have to do is ask and he'll tell you what's available — and if the store isn't too busy, he can even whip up a custom vegan meal!
I was served a spectacular leek and mushroom tartlet with a carrot, tomato, and lettuce side salad, and a generous serving of chutney. It was easily the best meal I've had in Penola by a wide margin, and one of the best road trip meals I've ever had anywhere. I asked for my meal in a takeaway container so I could sit and eat it in the park (just a few doors down from the cafe, it's lovely), and Ian gladly obliged.
This place is absolutely fantastic. Any vegan, vegetarian, or celiac travelling through Penola should come here.
