Small vegetarian cafe by the river, with options such as soup with bread and cheese or hummus, salads, jacket potatoes, flapjacks and cakes (usually some vegan), and drinks including a selection of cordials. Nice atmosphere and retro posters on the walls. Confirmed closed, Apr 2021.

Lovely Homemade Food in Cosy Little Veggie Cafe - Edit
I stumbled across this hidden gem of a cafe last year, and have since returned every time I visit Ambleside. Its such a lovely little cafe, run by the owners. They make all the food themselves, serving things like homemade cakes (some vegan and gluten free), soup, jackets with yummy veggie toppings and they do specials.
Read moreI would recommend a visit to the Rattle Gill when you next go to the Lakes, its tucked away so you might have to look out for the signs, or ask a local.
Pros: Homemade Food, Great Value, Friendly Owners
Cons: Too many yummy cakes to choose from!

Could be better - Edit
I don't know why they haven't bothered to label their vegan options. Even the cakes in the fridge weren't labelled and how hard can it be to just write "Ve" next to those that are. They are trying which is the main thing but a small change for them would be a massive help to their customers wanting to eat vegan.

Fabulous friendly cafe - Edit
Went here for lunch and hubby had a banana and peanut butter toasted panini (each to their own!). I had a lovely Buddha bowl with avo and black beans and beetroot hummus etc etc. Delish! Please support these guys who also have a veggie deli round the corner where we bought some vegan yummies.

Friendly and accommodating staff. Ask which cakes are vegan - they're not labelled but there are plenty of options.

Lovely setting, vegan and vegetarian cafe - Edit
Lovelyvegetarian and vegan cafe in a beautiful setting. You can get a great lunch here! 2nd on my list to Ghandi’s Cafe, just because the vegan menu isn’t as large.

Delicious food and super friendly people - Edit
What a lovely find. Ambleside is stuffed to the gills (Ghylls!) with cafés of varying quality, so it was fantastic to find a friendly and ‘real’ place down a little back street. Perfect fresh bread for the sandwiches and wonderful cake and coffee.

Lots of vegan options - Edit
We searched for this place and its very cute and cosy. The food was insane we both had the soup which was vegan with bread and hummous. Boyfriend had soup combo so had a hummous sun-dried tomato and olive panini and it was the most delicious sandwich ever. Definitely recommend if in the area. The staff are GREAT

Friendly atmosphere. Vegan Corn Chowder and toasted hummus panini just hit the spot. The Date & Cinnamon flapjack rounded everything out. Great experience.

Take it or leave it - Edit
Went as Gandhi's was closed (which looked to have better vegan options). The soup was ok. The local community are clearly behind this place but they won't be winning any awards for innovation. Annoying how vegan things aren't labelled on the menu or boards.

lovely home made food - Edit
Great home made cafe food in a lovely setting by a river. 100% vege but a shame they don't mark their vegan options on the menu (had to ask). Would definitely recommend it though.

We stumbled across The Rattle Ghyll, looking for vegan options after a long walk. Result! Highly recommend for a light bite, coffee & cake! P.S. love the eco-friendly takeaway packaging and even cleaning products in the loo.

We dropped in on way to a walk and they offer vegan cakes and hummus and roasted veg and olive doorstep sandwiches you can take away. Not many options like that in town so check it out.

Real Tea - Edit
This is a homely and restful place that has a Himalayan vibe. Or possibly hygge. It serves a good selection of simple meals that are or can easily be veganised. There is a choice of vegan cakes and the tea is loose leaf which makes a simple cuppa into a delicious treat. I will be going back whenever I am in the Lake District.

Lovely friendly little café - Edit
Admittedly we only tried the milky chai and a flat white coffee but we had a lovely experience here.
Read moreThe cafe is warm and friendly in a beautiful location nestled between some picturesque old houses, shops and a stream.
We ordered two vegan milky chaise and were offered a choice of soy milk or oat. We choose the oat and the waiter checked with us that we didn't want honey (which we didn't ). It was nice to have such knowledgable staff. We shared the pot which was huge - the chai tea was so good we happily had three large cups each. Our friend had a flat white which he loved despite being very particular about his coffee.
Pros: Lovely ambience, Knowledgeable about vegans, Excellent chai tea

cosy cafe - Edit
Cute little cafe in the heart of Ambleside. Had soup and sandwich combo. Both soups were vegan and delicious. Nice Mediterranean vege sandwiches. Only had one vegan cake choice but it was a peanut flapjack which was chewy and yummy. Nice choice of teas. Was just over £22 for two.

You won't do any rattling around in here. - Edit
A small, very crowded café. In particular, there is a VERY narrow passage leading to the dining area and several people were often struggling to get past at once. Single toilet with a very long queue. Rather cold on my first visit (in winter) and poorly lit. Ventilation seemed to be an issue on my second visit because the room was so steamy it was difficult to see out through the windows. The menu and specials board are artistic and well-designed. The savoury dishes (e.g. tagines, chilli) are fine, but to my disappointment none of the tasty-looking cakes is vegan; the first time I was sent away with a flapjack, the second time with nothing at all. There is art for sale on the walls but also a picture of a golliwog, which did not exactly make a good impression.

Cons: Crowded, no vegan cakes, golliwogs (in this day and age?!)

cosy little cafe - Edit
The cosy little cafe is in a perfect location right by the waterwheel in Ambleside town centre.
Read moreThey serve big portions of wholesome comfort food. Everything is veggie with many vegan options. The menu consists of down to earth veggie faves such as soups, sandwiches, salads & 3 bean chilli.
Definitely the best place for a veggie lunch in Ambleside.
The only downside would be that they have no wifi or card machine. It is also very small which does add to the charm, but I imagine it gets very full at busy times.
