Great pub and beer garden

How good is it to have lunch in a beer garden? I’ve always loved the Rainbow on a night out and decided to try it out for lunch. The staff were really friendly and helpful. After ordering a beer I let my omnivore companion choose two vegan dishes for us to share, which ended up being the spaghetti and meatballs and the burger (both $22). The burger was all right but dominated by the fairly sweet pickled beetroot. Similarly, the spaghetti was OK, with tolerable vegan meatballs, but not amazing. I was glad it came with a side salad, for some vegetable content to cut through all the carbs. Portions were decent and prices typical (for inner-city pubs). I’ll always come back here for a drink, but, while the food was fine and the beer garden cool, I’m not sure about future lunch date, as the vegan range is not huge.

Pros: Nice beer garden, Friendly staff

Moussaka was Delicious!

I went here with friends on a Sunday when it’s really busy and they have live music. The atmosphere is really good and the staff are friendly despite being really busy at the bar (where you order food).
I tried the moussaka and it was delicious! Nice hot meal for a chilly day in Melbourne. I would definitely go and have it again.

Rainbow Hotel a hidden gem in the back streets of Fitzroy

It’s in the middle of nowhere, tiny little pub just past the police station and the court house. You go in open fires, booked out restaurant-with amazing food and very friendly bar staff.

Pros: Enough vegan and gluten free options to be 👍, Spicy king pap cauliflower share dish - amazing , The Lentil Mousaka was so filling

Nothing Like Description

If I was non veg and tried their ‘Eggplant Moussaka’, I’d definitely remain so. Worst veg*n fare I’ve tried in the area (and I work around here, so have tried A LOT). The portion sizes were small considering the cost; the ‘vegan feta’ comprised boiled chunks of salted tofu; the ‘beetroot salad’ tasted like chunks of the tinned variety; and the moussaka was basically dry tasteless lentils topped with mash without a smidgen of eggplant. For the same price, you could literally feed two people from most of the nearby veg joints.

Pros: pool table

Cons: uninspiring tasteless stodge, not what is described in the menu, overpriced, poor value for money
