excellent food!! - Edit
I started coming here about 8 years ago, and every time I visit Chicago I get a meal here. The food is consistently some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. I usually get tacos with a variety of vegan meats - my favorites are the chorizo and carnitas. The vegan horchata is also a must have. The staff is also consistently friendly and helpful, creating a nice atmosphere for eating, despite the rather run-down location. I highly recommend!!

Best tacos I’ve ever eaten - period. - Edit
My friend turned me onto this place a couple months ago and I was immediately in love. Their chorizo tacos are THE BEST tacos I’ve ever had. This is a great atmosphere with incredible food. This is also a completely authentic “ethnic” restaurant which doesn’t serve meat. That in itself makes this a great dining experience. Combine that with the great food and you get my favorite restaurant in Chicago.

Mostly amazing but the vegan cheese is a sad joke. - Edit
This is probably some of the best if not the best Mexican food I’ve had since going vegan. The biggest problem I have with restaurants in general is that the food isn’t seasoned well enough and there isn’t enough flavor. I usually leave a restaurant thinking “between me, my mom or my grandma, we could make that better.” But this place???? Holy cow. Can’t complain at all about how the food tastes. I had tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos and desserts. Most of it was to die for.
Read moreThe tres leached cake is great but the rice pudding isn’t as sweet as I’m accustomed to. The horchata “water” isn’t bad but I did wish it was more milky but it still satisfied the horchata craving.
THE WORST part was the vegan cheese. I’m pretty sure it’s just minced tofu with minimal seasoning. No taste. No melt no stretch, nada. I got a quesadilla and there was nothing that even resembled melty quesadilla goodness. Just a tortilla folded over food. Boo. The food is still amazing just don’t get the vegan cheese it’s a waste of money.
Pros: Hands down AMAZING food , Inexpensive
Cons: Vegan cheese is a joke , Horchata “water”??

Tons of options and usually fantastic, but I’ve had a couple meals that weren’t great. Vegan Horchata is worth it alone.

Best Vegan Authentic Mexican In town - Edit
I really miss authentic mexican food which could easily be made vegan by modifying the bean and rice recipes. This place has done that and more. the beans and rice contain no animal products and there's plenty of meat substitutes and vegan cheeses. Can't wait to eat here again.

I've had different tacos and burritos but always end up getting the super veggie burrito with Tinga. It feeds me for 3 meals, no joke! All the food here is great, also a wide variety of fresh juice and is BYOB. The waitstaff has always been very friendly.

Definitively a go to place when I am in the neighborhood. There are lots of unique vegan options on the menu, food that you won't find anywhere else. The place is very casual and BYOB. The food is reasonably priced and the staff is very friendly.

ok - Edit
Cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff waited on us. Menu is very extensive and explanatory. Prices are cheap. I had both types of tamales which were decent. Also had the mushroom quesadilla which I wouldn't recommend. It was hot but not like pressed and grilled like i would have expected. a lot of mushrooms with a small amount of onions and daiya cheese inside. Bland.

We ordered Tortas, a tamale, cake, and two horchatas which were humongous. I felt like the pricing was pretty reasonable. Just be sure to ask what is vegan or not because it’s not labeled!

We stood at the counter in front of 4 employees for 5 minutes before anyone asked what we wanted. It was weird. The food was authentic and tasty but I wouldnt eat it again. Btw there is no $5 foot long burrito. There are 3 identical menus all with different prices. I still don't know what I paid for.

My favorite place in Chicago. - Edit
I adore this place. Delicious, home-style mexican cooking. Very affordable and the portions are big. The staff is super-sweet. They have foods that you don't see in the US very often: pumpkin blossoms, nopales and huitlacoche, as well as a lot of really good meat-substitutes.

Cons: Slightly unusual hours, so check before you go.

Such Fun! - Edit
Very humble storefront and neighborhood. Wonderful eating. I'd never seen a vegetarian Mexican restaurant before, and not just without meat--about everything is made with meat analogs. It is stated to be vegan friendly, but having eaten there a number of times when I go through Chicago, I don't think I've eaten any cheese on what I order right off the menu.
Read moreYou can order at the counter, especially to go, or sit and be served. (If your server's English is halting, don't try to ask much alteration from the menu!)
If you can't handle the very spiciest of Mexican cuisine, be sure to ask. There are scads of taco choices, for instance; and I once just pointed at several that looked good (after all, it's all vegetarian!), but one of them turned out to be a bit much for my gringo tongue--ate it anyway, with tears flowing down my face!
Lots of juices if you're in to that sort of healthy drinks, but I've not yet tried any!
Pros: Great choices, wonderful taste, very fair prices.
Cons: Not the place to celbrate anniversary with wife!

GET HERE! - Edit
I have to admit one of things we really miss is going out for Mexican food. Remember those combination plates with the gravy and melted cheese? So we were determined to get here while visiting Chicago. It was a trip from the Loop (we took a taxi, but you don't have to).
Read moreAnyway, the important thing is the amazing food in a typical, very basic setting with friendly staff. We started off with handmade tamales; authentic and delicious! I got stuffed poblanos, which came with rice and the creamiest refrieds ever. It was fantastic. My husband got these "steak" burritos which also came with rice/beans. They were amazing. We got a pair of Tinga--chicken quesadillas. It was all just incredible. No cervezas on the menu, but she told us it's BYOB and we ran across the street and bought a beer. It was all pretty cheap, it just doesn't get any better.
Pros: Delicious and authentic, Cheap, Friendly
Cons: Very informal setting (if you care)

When I miss home, I eat here. - Edit
I'm from the Southwest, and when I moved here one of the biggest things I missed was vegan friendly Mexican food.
Read moreEven though the food is more expensive then what I would get in Phoenix, it's cheap for Chicago, the portions are bigger, and it's good to know the only thing on the menu I can't eat is the eggs. They serve agua frescas and vegan horchata(!), along with all the Mexican foods I grew up with, including vegan menudo, mole, and pozole!
I have eaten most things on the menu, my favorites are the super burrito (averages 19" with an 11” circumference, but only costs a little more than their regular burritos), and flor del calabaza quesadilla which melts in my mouth.
Sometimes service can be a little slow, and they are Seventh Day Adventists, so they observe the Sabbath starting at sundown on Friday, and ending at sundown on Saturday, so their hours can be a bit wonky.
The good members of the community and host lots of vegan bake sales, but if you go there to eat during one, beware that other people might have the same idea and food will take longer.
Pros: Almost whole menu available vegan, Big portions, Low prices
Cons: Odd hours on Friday and Saturday, Service can be slow if busy, No wifi

great place to try Mexican food - Edit
Being English we haven't eaten much Mexican food, and it was so great to have this place to go to (twice - and we'd definitely love to go back). The food was all really good, very good value. They have unusual things (or at least, unusual for us) - nopales (cactus) and corn truffles. Loved the pork skin quesadilla and the torta in particular. Everything was very good. When you get there, they bring you tortilla chips and three kinds of salsa.
Read moreTips - if you want daiya cheese rather than tofu as cheese replacement, you need to ask specifically - it's no problem and no more expensive. Also, I really wanted to try the cup cakes but they weren't available either time. They did have other desserts but it's inconsistent what they have. Apple pie was brilliant.
Really delicious and unusual fresh fruit juices / smoothies too.
Pros: Delicious, Amazing value, Variety of Mexican food
