Tastes like cigarettes - Edit
Arriving late in Taipei, I wanted to eat at the closest vegan place to my hotel. This turned out to be "Qui Mama". It's located in a small back alley, full of other small restaurants. The place looks downright dirty and my first thought was: "this is food poisoning waiting to happen".
Read moreSince everything is written in Chinese, I had to go on the photos on Happy Cow. The owner, Mama Qui herself, doesn't speak English and when I showed her my phone with the Happy Cow listing she called a man. He also didn't speak much English, but enough to confirm "no meat" and "big or small portion"? Then Mama Qui said: "MONEY".
I didn't choose anything from the menu, I think "the man" did. He selected noodles with fake meat in some broth for me. The fake meat tasted the way cigarettes smell (although there was no one smoking in the restaurant). I think it was made from mushrooms, but at one time I bit a hard part which could have been a seed (and mushrooms don't have those). The noodles tasted dry, even when scooped right from the soup.
Perhaps if you go here with a local who can read the menu you can get decent food at Mama Qui, but for a tourist who just arrived in Taipei this isn't a good start for what is supposed to be a culinary tour.
Pros: cheap
Cons: fake meat tastes like cigarettes, noodles have a dry taste, place looks disgusting

Super local, mostly vegan (?) eatery - Edit
This place is listed as vegan, but there were non-vegan items on the menu (bivalves)... I mean I know some vegans claim bivalves are "debatable" but... biologically, zoologically, factually, they aren't plants, so... um, yeah.
Read moreAnyway I had a noodle thing and the taste was pretty nice, but this place isn't exactly tourist friendly - I wasn't their usual clientele (local regulars) and I think my clumsiness amused the owner lol! I told her the food was delicious afterwards and she just dismissed me with a wave of her hand lol ;-)
Pros: yummy local food
Cons: not totally vegan?, no english menu

Nice local place to eat - Edit
We have the vegan version of beef noodles that are very typical in Taiwan and we loved them! The aunty is really nice and helpful! No need to speak English or Chinese as her food is amazing!

Lovely local food - Edit
You take a menu in and sit down, contemplating what you are going to get while not understanding a single word on the menu - that’s the local experience! Just pick a few mysterious items i guarantee you won’t be disappointed ;) tip - the boxes on the menu is showing different types of flavours while first item in a box is normally rice 飯,then soup 湯, then noodles 麵/面, then thin rice noodles 米粉,then transparent green bean noodles 冬粉, etc. Bon appetit😊☀️

Basic noodles - Edit
I was in the area and had seen this listing so I checked it out. They seem to have a few noodle dishes as well as the rice/sides thing; my I had one of the former and it had very little flavour, but it wasn't super oily which was nice. Could've been cheaper, but some other dishes were, not that I knew what they were!
Read morePros: authentic, not drowning in oil
Cons: some dishes very plain
