Not fully vegan - Edit
They sold out - this used to be a fully vegan spot and was really good, but now they share kitchen space with a bunch of other “restaurants” - they claim the vegan food is cooked separately but when I went there last the place reeked of meat and they looked too busy to be clearly caring about cross-contamination.

Strange place - Edit
Like 6 restaurants in one spot called Hungry House. Should not be listed as vegan. All food comes from the same kitchen. Would not recommend.

That’s strange - they’ve changed things up apparently? I was there last year and it was a separate place called Pure Grit.

Yeah. Not like that anymore.

That’s sad. I got the chance to talk to the owner that one time I was there, and she and her family all seemed like very passionate vegans, I wonder what made them sell out like this!

A fair vegan BBQ option but not one I'd seek out - Edit
I had heard a lot about Pure Grit before it opened and was quite excited to give it a try. We ordered the Impossible cutlets+broccoli salad+fries combo, mac and cheese, and BBQ chicken option. The broccoli salad and fries were good but the core items were underwhelming. As others noted, this is a "ghost kitchen" set up so not much space if you actually want to stay and eat. I did appreciate the compostable cutlery and dishes and reusable trays.

An odd place - Edit
This is mostly a take out restaurant with a few tables inside and out. Not much in the way of atmosphere, it actually feels a bit dirty.
Read moreOrdering is done via a kiosk where you choose from a bunch of different restaurants. I'm guessing the kitchen prepares food for delivery services under different restaurant names? It's a bit confusing.
The food was ok. It seemed fresh and the presentation was good. It didn't have a lot of flavor though. The mac and cheese was very bland and runny. The bbq chicken was good as was the broccoli salad. The potato salad was very strange and flavorless.

Pretty OK - Edit
I ordered the main 2 sides plate. They charge an extra $3.00 for choosing the Impossible option so it turns into a pretty expensive lunch. The sauce is pretty tasty & the broccoli salad was pretty nice. I was on the fence with the baked beans though - a tad too sweet for me. The little cube of cornbread was dry as hell & just crumbled to dust. You order from a kiosk & no one really pays any attention to you until they bring you your food. Glad I tried it but not sure I’ll keep it on my radar.

Hmmmm....I'm not at all pleased with Impossible anything, but I will have to go try this place at least once - the photo looks good!

We were super disappointed with the cornbread too and the owner told us later they’re supposed to offer vegan butter or honee but clearly that hasn’t been fixed

Wanted to like this place but wasnt particularly impressed by the quality of the food for the price. The impossible meatloaf was good but the potato salad and mac and cheese were pretty bland. The staff were really nice so i hope it was just an off day.

I got the broccoli salad and the potato salad. While the broccoli salad had more flavor, neither was particularly well seasoned or good.

Tasty food but we thought the prices were really steep for what we got and the portion sizes. Marty’s burgers down the street is way better value.

Eh - Edit
Had high hopes for this place based off of the other reviews on here, but honestly.. I found their food to be really quite flavorless.
Read moreThe jackfruit nachos supposedly won an award, but the jalapeños had more flavor than the jackfruit and the cheese itself. I could tell the jackfruit had bbq seasoning on it, and the texture was great but it just wasn’t enough of it.
The mac and cheese was watery, both in consistency and flavor.
The potato salad was honestly pretty good. Nothing special but also no complaints.
The fries were crispy and I liked how they weren’t super heavy or oily. They could’ve used more salt but I still really enjoyed them!
Overall, the food was lacking in seasoning, maybe I came on an off day but I wouldn’t go out of your way to come here if you aren’t in the area. It was expensive for the portion size too. I’ve had better gf vg food.

Super convenient comfort food! - Edit
My non-vegan dad and I online ordered during our trip to the city. The wait time was super reasonable considering what we ordered and it being late dinner rush! We ordered the Mac and Cheese which was decent- definitely different from traditional Mac. The baked beans and potato salad were FIRE but the star of it all was the Impossible Cut Brisket. Oh my god, absolutely delicious. Wish I could have it right now! The waffle that came with it was underwhelming. Also got the Deep Fried Oreos and an Oreo Milkshake that I can no longer find on the menu… but both were super good and sweet, the shake was so thick! Looking forward to hopefully coming back and exploring some new options!

Delicious with interesting options! Very casual spot. I got the impossible meatloaf plate and it was delicious. My husband liked his mushroom main and my friend liked her sweet and sticky tofu. They also liked the mashed potatoes. Next time I want to try the "chicken"!

Unique options! - Edit
I’ve eaten at a lot of vegan restaurants, but this is the first time I’ve ever had vegan bbq! I wish this was an option where we live. I was surprised to find that it’s gluten free too! We really enjoyed everything we ordered and my hubby liked his chicken and waffles even though he doesn’t have to be gluten free. Yum! Bbq tofu, Mac n cheese, chicken and waffles!

BBQ didn’t live up to the hype - Edit
High expectations coming here. Easy to read menu. Some indoor seating available. Cashier made recommendations based off of best sellers not personal experience (she is not vegan and hasn’t eaten the food!?!). I ordered a main dish of mushroom tips with a side of mashed potatoes and baked beans. It comes with a waffle. Disappointed because of all the beautiful pictures and reviews. Didn’t live up to the hype (for me). I would come back and try something different.
Read moreI also had their Chick’n and waffle. The Chick’n is a Daring product which I have wanted to try. The slaw is really the star of the dish (IMO). It was good. Again, small portion size and pricy. The Daring Chick’n was also good.

Damn good barbecue - Edit
Vegan barbecue is hard to come by in NYC. In fact I’m not sure it’s ever been tried. Pure Grit decided to put an end to that and came up with some incredible dishes. They even managed to reproduce the barebones presentation that centers the meats and the flavors do not disappoint.

That Impossible Patty!! - Edit
Tried them at Vegandale and then went to the restaurant. Their smoked Impossible patty is what dreams are made of. I loved their potato salad (it was almost mashed, some might not like that), as well as their beans.
Read moreHowever, I am not a fan of their cole slaw at all and as well as their waffle. The mac and cheese is just okay, a really small portion for the price.

Super solid option - Edit
EVERYTHING is vegan and gluten free!
Read moreThe impossible plate is definitely the thing to order of you're only getting one thing.
The coleslaw is OK, not great on its own, but good when paired with the rest of your meal.
I'd skip the Mac n cheese. Tasty, but not mind blowing and at $12 for a small portion I'd say not worth it.
The waffle fries are amazeballs!
The tofu bites were really good. I was super impressed by both the texture and flavour.
The jackfruit plate wasn't very good.
Daring chicken and waffles was really good!
All the sauces thay come with meals as well as extras on the counter really add to the meal as well as their shaker of the bbq rub.
Cookie wasn't bad, but I'd just order more waffle fries next time!
Pros: Everything is VGF , Sauces sauces sauces! , Can purchase sauces

Great place! - Edit
I had the jackfruit sandwich and it was delicious - I especially enjoyed the bun, and it’s hard for me to come across a bun that I think is actually tasty and isn’t just an “oh well, it’s something that holds the insides of my sandwich”! The coleslaw that I got on a side was delicious also - not overly salty, just right. I chatted with the owner for a bit which was nice, and apparently they had just won an award at a non-vegan food fest so that was impressive. Overall I thought the menu was a bit barebones and the portions were on the smaller side for the price, but it’s still a 5-star place for me - I’ll be back!
