Revamped and 100% Vegan - Edit
I've been following Princesa do Castelo on facebook for quite a while, and I noticed they were revamping the place since the end of 2013. This Friday (25/04/14) I went back to check their page and saw they are finally open and as a 100% Vegan restaurant. Went there 2 consecutive days, once in the afternoon to eat a cake and once to eat lunch and let me tell you, both were quite ok. They have around 4 to 5 dishes, soup and 2 deserts every day. You must taste their vegan cakes.
Read moreBoth the food and the atmosphere were awesome.
The food is 100% organic.
The fresh squeezed juices are great.

Nice food - Edit
Basic menu, we had the dish of the day (pumpkin daal) and the burger. €21 total for the food. Dish of the day was tasty but not really filling. Burger was really good and came with good potatoes. Sourdough bread instead of buns, a bit dry with so much bread. Dish of the day a bit pricey for what you get imo - but always happy to support all vegan places.

Nice, could be better. - Edit
The cafe is in a good location when tired from sight seeing at the castle. It is cash only and that is not clearly mentioned when you go in, not by the server or on a sign on the door.
Read moreThe menu was small, maybe because it's midwinter? We had the bean burger and the Thai red curry.
The bean burger was better value for money, more substantial meal. However, the burgers were not very well cooked. Could have been cooked a bit longer. the curry was very small for the money. We often find this in Portugal and Spain. Portion sizes are small.
Pros: Attentive server.
Cons: Small portions.

Simple, casual, friendly, tasty, healthy, well-priced - Edit
Very casual, friendly spot with a daily special or two and a handful of regular menu options. All are simple dishes, just 4-5 euros each, and fairly unique. I ordered a potato cabbage dish and a tomato and potato/veggie stew, a vegan version of a classic Portuguese dish. I wish there were some options with more (vegan) protein. Didn’t see anything with tofu or tempeh, for example. The special was Thai red curry with veggies and rice (no tofu). Lots of potato and salt. Enjoyed Ayurvedic tea and interesting dessert - warm sesame pudding in a tall glass. Unlike anything I’ve tried before! Centrally located to Alfama and Castle, etc.

Yum! - Edit
Stopped in for a quick snack. Had the caldeirada. It was very tasty. I couldn’t place one of the spices, boggled my mind with every spoonful. It felt like a familiar spice but I’d never had it in soup so it was confusing at first. I finally asked. It was cloves. What a lovely addition. I really enjoyed it.

Good food but unprofessional - Edit
While I enjoyed the food, the experience was a bit marred by the fact that the restaurant is cash-only and the staff only informed me about this after we had eaten our food. There were no visible signs or warnings about this inconvenient policy. I had to walk around 40 minutes total to get enough money from our hotel to pay. When I was gone my partner stayed behind but staff made him move from his table. I was also surprised when staff couldn’t muster even a ‘Sorry for this inconvenience’ or a comped glass of wine or something.
Read moreI find it pretty unprofessional to not have receipts or a credit card scanner and to not inform customers about this until the last minute. Despite this inconvenience I did enjoy the food (I recommend the vegan omelette).
Pros: Healthy vegan food, Charming restaurant
Cons: Very limited menu , Cash only

Friendly place and nice food - Edit
Delicious food, simple menu, good location. Soup of the day had a pretty unique taste (in a good way). The masala dish was very delicious and crunchy. The desert was a chocolate salami - delicious, chocolaty and a bit of a cookie dough texture. Not some regular brownie at all. Note: card not accepted, open on Sunday.

Loved the food - Edit
A simple but very tasty menu. We loved the food and the service. The restaurant it self looks to simple and you might think twice before entering. You will not be disappointed for the food. The main-course changes daily. 5 for the food, 3 for the restaurant.

Good food - Edit
We had a good lunch there, the salad was a good size for the price and my bean burger was also very good. They have different daily offers and the raw chocolate cheesecake with basil was pretty good. The vegan pastel de nata was alright, the filling came close to the original but the puff pastry around it didn’t have any of the crunchiness or anything of the original one. It also was cold. Still a really enjoyable atmosphere and a cute shop with gender neutral bathrooms.

THEY HAVE THE TART!! - Edit
my dad and i were really worried that we would have to break our veganism to try out the classic portuguese custard tart that every single bakery on every single corner sells for cultural experience purposes. just before we were about to buy one with egg and milk, we came across this restaurant that has FANTASTIC vegan ones!!! i’ve never had better luck. we got one twice and both times it was a little under-warmed, but i am too happy about it to care. we also got some corn crackers with hummus and salsa as well and those were great. good service and fun people. have to pass by on the way to the castle anyways so you should come here is the bottom line.
