Every full moon public holiday (Poya Day) the Mount Lavinia Hotel does a 100% vegan buffet from 1:30pm-3:00pm. Food is influenced by ideas from the Vegan Sri Lanka group. Split into juices, salads, canapés, vegetables, Sri Lankan, Indian, Asian, Western, pasta station and dessert station for a fixed price which includes the use of the beach and pool. Uses organic and locally sourced ingredients. Reported some desserts could contain honey - please check and keep HappyCow updated. Open Poya Day 12:30pm-3:00pm.

amazing vegan buffet

I normally avoid buffets but this one was incredible! It just happened to fall the day after I arrived in the country (on holiday) so what perfect timing! There were so many desserts, wow, and a lot of mains to choose from too, so try to pace yourself 😄

I was chatting with one of the managers and she said they do a daily high tea as well. If you give them advance notice they'll make sure to have vegan options available for you.

Best Buffet Ever!!!

We were astounded by the variety of food on offer at this monthly buffet, and wish we could be in Colombo for another Poya Day!

There must be at least 45 hot savoury dishes, not including the vast salad station, representing cuisines from around the world. Sri Lankan, of course, but also Indian, Pakistani, Thai, Lebanese, Italian, German and more! Our biggest challenge was pacing ourselves!

Desserts are beautifully displayed, and range from cake and brownies to jellies and agar-style puddings. Plus loads of fresh fruit.

Total cost for the buffet (excluding drinks, except for table water and fruit juice shots) is 2,300 rupees. This also includes access to the hotel’s pool, which is usually 1,000 rupees on its own for a day visitor.

If you’re in Colombo for full moon, try not to miss this. It’s probably worth calling ahead, as it was very busy when we visited!

Note - the Governor’s Restaurant, where the buffet is served, is not normally a vegan restaurant, but it does have a regular separate vegan menu!

Pros: Countless vegan options, Access to hotel pool included in price, Great value for money

Cons: Restaurant is not normally vegan

Amazing

I planned my Sri Lanka trip around this buffet, worth it! So much choice, the salad and dessert bar were worth it on their own. But the hot food was also excellent! Hope I can come again one day!

Pros: Excellent amount of choice, Reasonably priced

Yay!

A delightful way to spend a Poya day. The staff and chefs allow you to thoroughly enjoy sumptuous choices for an afternoon. The pool and beach are part of the package (but do take care to swim before eating)! Take a tour around the lovely old hotel too (be sure to ask about the museum and "love tunnel). I am a happy regular!

Pros: Some dishes are available "made to order".

Cons: Be nice to have more sugar-free dessert options.

Amazing Vegan Buffet!

For 2000 LKR you get an extraordinary vegan buffet with dishes from many different countries. The dessert table is to die for. You can eat inside or out by the pool with beautiful views of the ocean. You have use of both the pool and the private beach included in the price. I live In Mount Lavinia and come on poya days every chance I get. I've never needed to make a reservation.

It just keep getting better every week. They make their own salad dressings even and everything is locally sourced and organic where possible. Bookings essential!! 2000Rs (about $20)

Pros: Its ALL vegan, You get to use the pool and beach, There's such a variety of food

Cons: There's no cons, its rad.

True, but none of those vegan foods are really healthy and they are going for the healthy aspect.
