Not Bad; Shortage of Vegan Lunch Options.

Based in the former Poundstretcher, Porth y Brenin is a cafe and a plant and homeware shop based on Castle Square in Caernarfon. The cafe is based on the first floor and is a modern well-lit space and features some of the plants that are for sale.

At the time of visiting, the food menu consisted of one vegan breakfast dish and one vegan lunch dish. The Vegan Breakfast is a full cooked breakfast, and the lunch option was a Grilled Vegan Sausage Sandwich on a choice of Sourdough or Foccacia bread. The cafe had a range of cold drinks, loose leaf teas, freshly squeezed orange juice, and coffees. There was Almond, Soya, and Oat milk available for drinks. The cake display had a few labelled vegan bakes, with the options during my visit including a Raspberry & White Chocolate Doughnut, Ultimate Carrot Cake, and a Sticky Toffee & Biscoff Spread Cake.

I went popped in for a vegan breakfast and had a raspberry & white chocolate doughnut to go with it and had a soya iced latte to wash it down. I was initially sceptical as this new cafe has received mixed reviews online, but I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. The front of house was good, the service was swift and the space itself was pretty nice. The vegan breakfast had more imagination than many meat centric cafes, as it included sauteed spinach and crushed avacado, and I had never seen the doughnut stocked anywhere before. The food was a little bland but enjoyable enough, and the doughnut was too dry, but the jammy filling compensated for this.

To improve the experience for vegans, Porth y Brenin could include more vegan breakfast options even if it's just some of the elements from the cooked breakfast served on toast (such as beans or avacado on toast). Porth y Brenin also really needs more vegan lunch dishes if they want to draw in more vegans, and the additions could be easy as the cafe already serve burgers and salads. As it stands, Porth y Brenin is a good place for vegans to enjoy coffee and cakes in Caernarfon as they have the widest range of vegan cakes I have seen amongst non-chain eateries. However, there are places that serve better vegan lunch and breakfast options, such as Y Wal and Caffi Maes.

Pros: Labelled Vegan Options, Multiple Plant Milks, Good Staff, Nice Space

Cons: Not Enough Vegan Menu Dishes, Quality Could Be Improved
