Not Vegan Friendly

They changed the name of the restaurant and removed the vegan/vegetarian option

Umeda favorite

The staff were very helpful about checking the menu and confirming what is vegan/non-dairy. UPDATE: 4 vegan curry options: lentil dahl, coconut vegetable, mushroom, and rassam spicy soup curry. Now I come all the time, and the service is always quick and great. Very convenient location if you’re near Hankyu Department store. Many solo/counter seats, 2 tables fit 4.

AMAZING FOOD & FRIENDLY STAFF

The vegetable plate taste absolutely divine. I love it. I'm from Singapore and there's a lot of Indian food where I'm from. I've also been to Indian as well. The food here really taste authentic. And not overly spicy as well. It is perfect for me

Pros: Vegetarian options

Get the vegetable curry set

The food is incredible and filling, though I only did have the curry set only so take that with a grain of salt. The staff reassured me the vegetable curry set I had with the lentil curry was the only vegan option and that it was made with coconut milk.

Pros: Incredible curry, Filling plates, Vegetable curry has coconut milk

Cons: Few vegan options, Confusing to get here, No bathroom in restaurant

NO VEGAN OPTIONS

The description says there are curries for vegans but when I asked employees if their vegetable curries have dairy in them, they said ALL the curries contain milk. Also, they only have several curry plates and absolutely NO side dishes at all. Just curry plates and drinks.

Pros: Has English menu

Cons: No vegan options, No side dishes, Hard to find, Uncomfortable seatings

Good option around this area if you are using Osaka Amazing Pass for HEP Five

Follow the instructions provided by contributor above and you will be able to find the place. Exit 5 and exit the mall and it’s right opposite. Thanks to the contributors I’m able to find it even I’m pressed for time.

Pros: Available when you are around the area, Seems to understand the word vegetarian

Cons: Menu in Japanese , Place is small, not suitable for large group.

Better than it looks from the outside

Osaka is not Tokyo. While Tokyo has vegan and vegetarian restaurants in every neighbourhood, Osaka requires a little more planning and travelling. So when I was at Osaka Station I had very little choice but Pongala Indian restaurant. It's a small place with just a few tables and some seating around the counter. You don't go here to have a good time, you go here for food and then you leave quickly.

On request an English menu is available. It offers two vegetarian options: the vegetable curry plate and the plate with a free choice of two curries. I chose the vegetable plate and as far as I could tell it was even vegan. It came with five little bowls of curry, rice in the middle and some garnishing (chick peas, green beans and more). The taste was good: spicy and lots of variety in the several curries. Even the presentation was decent.

In short: while Pongala may be your only choice in Osaka Station, it is pretty decent.

PS: I agree it's not easy to find, but the hint to search for the big Nesprosso sign really helped for me. The person who did not see the sign may have approached the restaurant from another direction.

Pros: great taste, not sure if it was vegan

Cons: not easy to find, limited choice

Good

Very annoying to find, but the person who mentioned going through the Keihan store was right. That’s the easiest way to find it. Food was good but nothing amazing. Some the dishes are spicy

Cons: Annoying to find, doesn’t speak much English

Delicious

I chose Sri Lankan Vegetable Curry and Bean(Lentil?) Curry in a set menu.
It was delicious. I especially loved the basmati rice with toppings.
Although I found it rather difficult to find, I'll definitely go again if I'm in the area.

Pros: delicious, not crowded, fair price

Finally found it!

Another Happy Cow mapfuck up, meant it took about 30 minutes to find (there is no Nespresso machine)

The curry was good but small. Left hungry. Sign on the wall says “please choose one dish per person, enjoy your meal and have a nice day”. In other words, ‘you’ll probably want more after you’ve eaten, but please don’t ‘.

Healthy Sri Lanka curry!

This place is located in underground shopping area between Subway Midosuji line Umeda station to big Hankyu department store. Try to go to the B1 Food and pastry floor of Hankyu Dept store, then on the exit of Nespresso coffee machine you will find this place in front of the exit.

Delicious Curry!

While a limited menu, I was so happy to see a few veggie-based curry on it. They were really flavorful. I give this place bonus points for being right at the heart of Umeda. The staff spoke English and were friendly. I would definitely eat there again.

Tasty South Indian

Veggie curries are clearly marked with a green "野菜ベース" seal. The only real option on the menu I was given was the "pick 2" lunch set, which lets you try 2 of the 4 veggie curries along with rice and some veggie salad sides. I am assuming everything was vegan, didn't taste any ghee but forgot to confirm with the staff. At 1000 yen it was a fair price for the area.

The Umeda underground is a hot mess. The most reliable way to find Pongala is to go into the Hankyuu Department Store, down to B1, and fight your way through the food court to exit 5. Pongala is directly across from exit 5 and impossible to miss.

Three stars for limited but clearly marked veggie options.

Pros: Clearly marked veggie options., Tasty Indian food.
