A Gold Medal Performance - Edit
Not to come over all old-timer, but back in my day this restaurant belonged to a different hotel chain. Having frequented it in my younger years, I was curious to see whether the change of ownership had altered the experience - for better or worse.
Read moreOne thing that certainly hadn’t changed was its sense of style. Still possessing a quiet elegance, this sunken dining room, punctuated by lush foliage and drenched in soft lighting, was every bit as sophisticated as I remembered. It strikes that difficult balance of feeling refined without ever becoming stuffy, making it a wonderfully relaxing place in which to ease into the day.
Another facet that has evidently remained intact is its reputation. Proudly displayed at reception desk was a recent award recognising the quality of its breakfast, a distinction that immediately heightened my expectations. Happily, they weren’t merely met - they were comfortably surpassed.
The first indication came in the form of the raspberry croissants. These were no dull, tokenistic vegan facsimiles of the real thing that I am so often subjected to. Instead, they were gloriously flaky, wonderfully sticky, and decadently buttery, to the point where, had I not known otherwise, I’d have struggled to believe they were plant-based.
My only concern after such a triumphant opening was that the buffet had peaked too early. Those fears were swiftly dispelled by a cavalcade of equally impressive offerings. There was a beautifully simple yet impactful coconut chia pudding, practically perfect sausages, and an excellent fruit muesli that brought a welcome point of difference to the cereal selection. Even the mushrooms were outrageously good, deeply savoury, and cooked to perfection.
Then came the final coup de grâce. Sitting quietly amongst the breakfast staples was a generous bowl of hummus. It may seem an unusual thing to become excited about first thing in the morning, but after several years living in UAE, it immediately gave me a comforting sense of home.
Is it pricier than other breakfast buffets in the city? Yes. Is the additional expense justified? Absolutely. For me, Dubai remains the benchmark against which all breakfast buffets are judged, yet this wasn’t just outstanding by Manchester standards - it was exceptional by anyone’s. If you’re looking to treat yourself to one of the finest hotel breakfasts I’ve had in the UK, this is the place to do it.
