I truly felt spoiled and special, non-judgmental establishment despite being so fancy

I've never been to a Michelin starred restaurant (let alone, one with two stars), but for mi'lady's birthday I wanted to do something extra special. I contacted them well in advance to see if they could accommodate a vegan (they said on their website they can accommodate nearly every dietary restriction) and the answer was yes, and that it's amazing! So we went to Pineapple and Pearls in DC. It was delicious, but what else would you expect? My vegan modifications were tasty and didn't seem to compromise on flavor, though some things couldn't be modified so I got a completely different thing. Obviously a soufflé can't be veganized, so they gave me a type of savory custard-like dish in formed in a mold, with tiny mushrooms and a delicious sauce. My second course was the gnocchi and it had a creamy sauce made from vegan butter. Not as much choice with the third course, so I had the risotto, again veganized. Dessert was an uninspired plate of sorbet. Although it didn't have to be veganized, it was straight off the menu as one of the dessert options. Other little tastes along the way for amuse-bouche: the beggar's purse couldn't be modified, so they served me little lettuce cups with vegetables and edible gold served on crystal pedestals. Apologies, but the tiny, inside-out "nachos" were too blurry in my photo. "Tomorrow's lunch (or a midnight snack)” was a vegan burger. All in all, definitely a splurge but worth it, maybe once every few years!

UPDATE November 2024: Returned to Pineapple and Pearls. This time a couple of courses were different from the first time. The amuse-bouche was again the lettuce cups, this time with soy "caviar." The first course was a salad featuring beyond meat crumbles, lychee, mint leaves, and coconut cream. Delicious! The second course was again the gnocchi with shaved truffles. Still, the best gnocchi I've ever had in my life. Third course was different this time: mushroom-stuffed trumpet mushrooms. Tasty! Fourth course was again the uninspired sorbet, the only disappointing course. Still recommended!
