Fresh produce and lots more

Very good healthfood store - vegetarian, organic, low-profit - with good-looking fresh produce, including lots of NZ apples (I’m here in April). Good vegan options. Rather small selection of vegan cheeses. Chilled and frozen items, pastries & breads, hot pot-pies (not every day). Large bulk section, with beans, grains, nuts, as well as household products. Many gluten-free items. Garden section attached.
Promotes fair trade and ethically sourced products. The attached kitchen produces hummus, muesli, nut butters and brownies. (In the past, they offered takeaway meals, but not anymore.)
Piko is a workers co-operative and charitable trust. “We have a strong ethos of keeping our environmental footprint as low as possible.”
Note: 1.2% surcharge on credit card payments (May 2025).

Savory Vegan Pies! Yes!

I had a super yummy vegan veggie pie from here. Also got some chocolate and tasty snacks. Really love the vibe of the place and what they stand for.

Always find somthing yummy

I love Piko, they are a co-op, and they have so many vegan and sustainable options. For all my chai lovers out there the goldenheart and hakanoa are the best. They also have more rare and unique items.

Just okay

I'm sure many people would find this place great but for me I found it just okay they don't have the selection you would expect from a vegeterian store I'm vegan and didn't really find it catered to my needs

Good range, very expensive

Great selection of dry goods and specialty items, organic etc. Pricey as you would expect from a shop selling that kind of thing

Friendly & helpful staff

After touring the South Island for the past few days wth limited vegan and vegetarian items in conventional supermarkets, I'm glad I went today to stock up on my staples like eggs, gluten free bread, dairy-free cheese, nut milk, bulk foods, and snack items before continuing my holiday. The staff face helpful recommendations for which items to purchase.

Pros: Bulk food items, Variety of gluten-free bread, Assortment of dairy-free cheese

Cons: Some items were more expensive than anticipated

Fabulous and well priced

On reading the reviews on HappyCow on this place and whole foods over the other side of town. We went straight to Wholefoods. What a disappointment!!! Today we decided to try Piko because it was so close to where we are staying. I can confidently inform that Piko is far superior and even cheaper than Wholefoods. The reviews I read are a year old so I can only assume they are out of date. Large range of hot vegan pies available at counter in hot biz. Great cafe next door also called The Herb Centre.

Pros: Has a good range, Well priced

Nice selection. Cold staff.

Small place but very well-stocked. I could imagine this being my go-to grocery store if I lived here. Staff should lose some of that haughty attitude and could've been friendlier.

Pros: great selection

Cons: snooty staff

Most excellent.

I could get lost in here. Sometimes I do.
Not because it's big and confusing, but because there are things I've never seen before and I forget who I am for a bit whilst looking at them and imagining them in my mouth.

piko.

sure, they stock some good things here, especially the little bird organics range. sadly, every time i go in there i get the holier-than-thou vibe from the staff. it's quite irritating. i now take my business to a friendlier organic shop and buy my little bird stuff direct from little bird.

Pros: little bird organics

Great little organic food store

Don't miss the vegan pie warmer! There is a nice selection of HOT vegan pies. Look at the codes on the side of the pie warmer, it'll show you the markings on top of the pies and the shape, such as round with three lines, etc. We did the vegan gluten free potato aduki bean pie and it was amazing! Great bulk foods, too. Great walk from the center of town along the Avon.

Pros: vegan pies

The best wholefood store in Christchurch

This shop does stock some vegan food items. Not extensive, but the best I found in Christchurch. They stock a few types of tofu and a small range of veggie (some vegan) sosages, burgers type stuff. Plus a small range of organic fruit and veg.

Pros: good marinated tofu, vegan snakc bars and choccy

Cons: a bit out of the way
