Cool experience but not satisfying - Edit
I really liked that everything on the menu was gluten-free and that roughly half of the menu was vegan. I also think the vision behind the restaurant was great. However, it was very pricey, and for the price, I’m not sure it was worth it. Most of the food, with the exception of the corn taco, was something I could very easily make at home. The roasted squash was particularly disappointing— 3 small pieces of squash with no added ingredients or seasoning roasted and served with a couple sauces on the side ($20 with the surcharge). The marichou was our favorite— delicious and loved the combination of corn and tomato. The taco was ok, the soup was ok, and the carrot tartare was disappointing. Overall, everything tasted very sweet and had less salt than we are used to. I think the restaurant is pursuing a great goal of decolonizing food, but I have to agree with a lot of the criticism in others’ reviews. And the 13%, non-gratuity surcharge felt a bit silly, but whatever. Would recommend trying once but not for a special occasion.

Excellent food & lots of options - Edit
They have very clearly marked plant items on the menu and they don’t serve any dairy at all. Highly recommend going in a large group and trying lots of options!

Not worth it - Edit
Maybe we ordered the wrong things here, but everything we got was pretty bland. We tried the mustard greens, corn chowder, bean dip, and stuffed tomatoes. The chimmichurri sauce was good, but it was the only thing with much flavor. The food was eatable, but definitely not worth the price.

Indigenous tapas - Edit
I loved the variety and — for me —novelty of the “decolonized” foods and drinks that make up the menu at Owamni. We shared an order of corn taco, corn fried tepary (beans), and stuffed poblanos, with Labrador Tea Custard for dessert. I had a green winter latte for my drink but would have tried the almond milk stout if I had gone for dinner instead of lunch. Kinda pricy, but I get it — staff need to be paid well. Bright, airy interior with nice views of the river. Check it out.

Great idea behind this place - Edit
The mocktails, service and overall idea behind this place is super awesome. When I think about what they can make after removing so many of the foods that aren’t native, it truly is amazing. However, I wasn’t blown away by the food in general, but maybe it’s just not my style of cuisine, or maybe it was the level of hype around this place. We really did love the roasted Chile sweet potato dish, it was the best by far. I enjoyed the experience and would consider going back once they change their menu for the new season. I highly recommend going for the experience alone.

3.5/5 - Edit
I booked a reservation months in advance because I heard it was the thing to do. We could only get a lunch reservation for our anniversary which was fine, it didn't seem too busy so I'm not sure what the fuss was about.
Read moreThe n/a drinks stole the show. I would come back here just for them! So refreshing and tasty. The small plates really weren't anything to write home about. Rice and beans, tacos with mushrooms, etc. I'll be honest, I expected to be blown away by the food but simply wasn't.
Pros: Unique and delicious drinks, Fresh food, Friendly staff
Cons: Can be pricey , Can be hard to get into

Good - Edit
I ordered one of everything vegan on the menu and split between the table. Good, but TBH I feel like I could have made everything I ate at home. Service was beyond excellent though and the location was great

Definitely worthwhile - Edit
This place is pretty hyped within Minneapolis - if you can get a reservation, even as a vegan it's worth your time. The veggie dishes are all vegan by default, so if it doesn't have meat in the menu, you're in the clear. (I don't think anything has honey but I could be misremembering.) The dishes are all delicious and run the gamut of carby, sweet, and savory/spicy. Unfortunately none of the vegan options have much protein other than some beans, but you will enjoy eating everything. The non-alcoholic house mocktails are also vegan and also very good. I've heard complaints that this place is bland and I completely disagree. Turn off your Minnesotan palate and come with an open mind.

Newest Favorite Place - Edit
This native-owned restaurant offers decolonized foods right downtown Minneapolis. The menu is super easy to use, the staff is absolutely amazing, and parking wasn't hard to find at all! Right now, reservations are highly recommended but outside seating is first come first serve, and if you get on the waitlist- it usually isn't that long of a wait. Go with a big group, so you can try a little of everything! I got the garden sisters and the black beans were seasoned perfectly.
