Long-established neighborhood health food store. Has a deli and juice bar. Products include fresh fruits and vegetables, snacks, vitamins, supplements, body care products, loose herbs, bulk staples. Small but well-stocked. SHUT DOWN AUG 2017.

Worst acai bowl yet... - Edit
This review is specifically for the acai bowl at the juice bar in the back, not for the actual store. The acai bowl is $8 and from a look at the bowl, has the potential to be quite large, but looks can be deceiving.
Read moreTo make your order, you have to write it on the ticket in the back of the store, bring it to the front to pay, and then go in the back to give them your ticket to make your bowl - seems more complicated than it needs to be. The bowls were made in about 5 minutes, and I never actually heard a blender go. It tasted almost like cherry juice in a bowl, topped with a bit of semi-nutty granola, five small slices of banana and a handful of very frozen blueberries. The texture of the acai itself was all liquid, it was like a non-thick smoothie in a bowl. We love lots of fruit on our acai, and so flavorless frozen blueberries and a few slices of banana did nothing for us. No honey on top also meant less sweetness.
As I've mentioned in other reviews, Santa Monica just doesn't seem to be able to do acai as well as other parts of LA! We've tried many bowls, and we both felt this was one of the least impressive we've had. Skip and try Paradise Bowls or Backyard Bowls instead.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL HEALTH FOOD STORE - Edit
BEST bulk herbs ever!! Upstairs in back is THE most complete collection of herbs in alphabetical order. Great bulk prices for any sized amount you need! Looked all over for Rue and they were the only place that 1) carried it and 2) ordered it because they were out of stock.
Read moreGreat natural organic facial care lines: Aubreys, Jaason ....
Nice natural pet care selection too: food, litter, flea spray.
Solid grocer selection, from tofu & soy milks, to fresh produce; from bulk basics (oats & sweet treats) to vegan desserts and coconut waters.
Pros: SOLID GROCER SELECTION, HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE, JUICE BAR!
Cons: ALWAYS HOT IN THERE

Get your juices here - Edit
Recently remodeled, finally! Although the new layout isn't perfect (imho), it is an improvement. Great that they've spent some energy on this after so many years. They have a new selection of raw food items to-go now as well.
Read moreThe fresh juice bar is great, and reasonably priced. They also have smoothies. There is a little bit of everything here. The prices are higher than large natural food market chains, but considering this being a neighborhood small business, it's very nice.
Pros: small but well-stocked, veg-friendly, close to beach

Corner Health Food Shop - Edit
One Life has been in business for so many years, for as long as I can remember coming to Main Street Santa Monica.
Read moreHere's my One Life Natural Foods review for happycow.
It's a nice little local health food stop with an organic juice bar and a deli (not all veg). In the summer of this year (2011), the owners modified their stock space to include more shelves and accommodate bulk food.
I come here sometimes to get fresh pressed juices from the juice bar or buy some snacks and quick food.
Pros: convenient, fresh organic juice bar, reasonable prices

great natural foods store, don't miss the deli - Edit
I really had no idea this place was here. There is a juice bar in the back and then behind that up like 2 stairs is a deli where you can get a tofu burger and some other vegan goodies. Also, I didn't notice that there is an upstairs with personal care products, too. Great place with a ton of stuff in a compact well organized premium location. Extremely nice small town store feel, too.

what a fun place - Edit
unfortunately i don't live near here, but a friend does and i'm so glad he brought to check it out. there's a great juice bar where you can get some good wheatgrass shots and they also have a nice deli area, and some prepared food from Leaf Cuisine and some other companies/places. They have a small but sufficient produce section, though i thought their selection of organic fruit was a bit lacking. They also carry all sorts of packaged health foods and drinks as well as bulk grains (though i didn't see any quinoa...). My favourite part however was the awesome tea/spice/herb room upstairs and in the back. What a great selection of some hard to find stuff! Though it's a little out of my way I'll definately be making may way back to One Life soon!
