Beautiful restaurant, menu only tofu

The restaurant itself is easy on the eyes and subsequently attracts plenty of tourists dressed up in kimonos. Seating overlooks a traditional Japanese garden. Only serves set menus. We did the hard tofu set and it was overall delicious, except for a kind of rice porridge that was cold, bland and gloopy. Highly suspect dashi is in some of the items but as flexitarians, this was great.

Pros: Ambiance, Tofu skewers with miso were a highlight

Cons: Little bit pricey , Touristy

Wonderful experience!

This was such a lovely experience! The hosts were lovely and sitting at the traditional low tables in a beautiful garden setting was a great cultural &
Food experience. I went with my family & my teenagers ( who say the dint like tofu) loved it. We were the only westerners there at the time.
Would definitely recommend it!! Would give 5/5
No signage on the door. Follow the map.

Everything was not vegan

This is a traditional Kyoto style tofu restaurant with a lovely view to their private garden. Overall the food tasted great but a few dishes included dashi which they couldn’t remove. They also where not willing to substitute any of the non vegan dishes for anything else. Luckily one person in our company do eat meat so the food didn’t go to waste.

We told 4 different staff that we where vegan but still there seem to be miscommunication (on person in our company is Japanese so it wasn’t about language barrier).

The food that was vegan tasted great but be careful, especially if you don’t speak fluently Japanese.

Experience a peaceful, soul comfort meal of tofu ryori

Kyoto prides itself on its top quality tofu cuisines. It goes without saying that you have to have at least one tofu meal while in Kyoto. If you travel in the Higashiyama area, then Okutan Kiyomizu would be an ideal place for lunch.

Okutan only serves one set tofu cuisine. We were let to sit on the tatami at a low table, facing a beautiful Japanese garden with a stream through huge windows. You have to inform the waiter that you are vegan in advance so they will remove the sesame tofu which contains fish. The meal was served in a series of courses-- starts from meshed Yam, followed by baked miso tofu on sticks, then boiled tofu in heated bowls, then vegetable tempura, rice with pickles.

Okutan is a good place to enjoy a serene break from the crowded, noisy tourists. Experience a peaceful, soul comfort meal of tofu ryori since everything here is beautiful, including the cuisines, the service, and the ambiance.

Not Worth the Value

I was really looking forward to going here again as I had gone with my mother 10years ago. I remember it was delicious. This time most of the food was good but not great and the tempura was a little tough. Perhaps overmixed or the batter had gotten too hot. I would have been happy enough if it hadn't cost Y4100.
