Inspiring, satisfying and fun. - Edit
We order takeout due to pandemic but the inside for pickup is warm and attractive. It’s taken me time to figure out what I’m ordering and eating, but I love the combo plate, the tofu-rice onigiri, the big pancake and fritters. The spicing, flavors and textures make every bite a joyful surprise. And a total vegan Japanese restaurant is an incredible treat.

Creative Japanese - Edit
If you are looking for typical Japanese fare found in most US restaurants - this is not that. If you are looking for creative comfort food — this is your place! Lots of healthy choices and interesting flavors. Interesting specials along with a nice selection of regular items.

mixed reviews/ hard vibes - Edit
I think the food was 'fine' nothing I would ever seek again.
Read moreWhat's odd to me was the hard vibes. I saw these two when they were at the Gresham festival, a food truck in Portland weekly and always encouraged others to try them, and gave positive vibes before the brick n mortar. This was strange. We got hard vibes, but it was selective, as she would go around to other tables to good vibe and then kind of scowl at us. We were unwanted guests, maybe it was that we were with a child and they don't want kids in their cafe. I can't really say.
The $10 cheezcake was not good. The nettle gyoza had positive review from those at the table. My dish was weak, but food for face.

Heavenly vegan Japanese food - Edit
I've been waiting YEARS to visit Obon Shokudo as I haven't been to Portland since they opened. I love ramen and sushi is fine but I've longed for a wider selection of vegan Japanese food and those are almost always the only two things I can find. I finally got to visit Obon Shokudo and it didn't disappoint. My husband and I split the combo (with the addition of two extra onigiri) and everything was sooo good. My favorites were the curried korroke, the potato salad, and the yuzu onigiri. I also got a seasonal namazake flight that was phenomenal, and their current seasonal dessert: matcha Sakura panna cotta. The panna clouds was a feast for the senses, beautifully presented in a glass cloche and absolutely delicious. We'll be in Portland for less than a week but I've already told my husband we're going back before we leave!

Not for us. - Edit
We tried this restaurant after seeing a few really good reviews on youtube. We were greeted and sat quickly. The menu can be ordered through a QR code. It was busy and stayed busy while we were there.
Read moreWe got the food items shown below and the texture was not it for me. The mixed green salad and dressing were really good so we got a regular sized salad after trying it as a side. We didn’t finish any of the other food items. Really none of them taste good to us.

I enjoyed it - Edit
This was the first food stop on my portland visit. I enjoyed the rice roll (I forget what it’s called) I got and the croquettes. The ramen, in my opinion, could have been better. It tasted good but I would of liked it to be more flavorful. The portion size was also a little small for the price. I’d definitely like to visit here again and try other things.

100% Vegan Restaurant! - Edit
Obon Shokudo offers a rarity in the Portland dining scene--100% vegan Japanese fare. While the majority of the food may be a bit salty & fried for my taste, I appreciate their seasonal focus & the opportunity to try dishes I simply can't find elsewhere. I look forward to visiting occasionally.

Agree that some of their stuff really is salty, but I appreciate the selection nonetheless

Definitely! I need to give them another try, as vegan Japanese is hard to come by in Portland.

Pleasantly surprised vegan Japanese food - Edit
This is my first time here the food looks great authentic seeming Japanese vegan food. try multiple dishes to get a feel of the menu. We really liked it from the appetizer type tofu dish that wasn’t on the menu but was recommended by the server to that different. Vegan gluten-free dishes. Everything seems good.

Great service and food - Edit
We asked for recommendations and were not disappointed. We had the onigiri with garlic, Aleppo, and pickled carrot/ginger. We had the tater tots w dill side salad, the potato, and the leek soup. We also got the chocolate amaretto cheesecake and loved it. My sister left her water bottle and they kindly gave us a call so we could grab it. They also gave us recommendations for 3 other vegan restaurants which were amazing too. Would return and recommend!

Nice warm atmosphere and excellent food! I wish I would’ve gotten the large kenchinjiru because it was one of the best soups I’ve ever had. The tsukemono was a delightful addition as well. Highly recommend.

I used to visit Obon at pop-ups and events years ago, but this was my first time to their brick-and-mortar on SE Grand. Unsurprisingly, I had a really great experience!
Read moreThe two onigiri I ordered were fresh and featured great, distinct flavors, and the salad and cup of soup I got on the side were fresh and delicious. I also split the okonomiyaki with my friend, which is the ultimate comfort food as far as I’m concerned.

100 percent all vegan Japanese comfort food - Edit
I recently went to Obon Shokudo. The owners are the chefs in the kitchen making Japanese comfort food. Almost everything here is made from scratch. They try to source their produce locally and organic as much as possible which is wonderful.
Read moreAwesome it is 100 percent vegan. I went with the curry udon. A soupy curry with handmade udon noodles, kaiak, fried tofu, veggies, and scallions. I added the three chili kanzuri hot sauce on the side that packed some heat.
It was solid. It was nice and warming as today was a cool rainy day in Portland. The service was solid.
I have been to Japan and always been a fan of Japanese cuisine. I would come back here to explore more of the menu.
Pros: 100 percent all vegan Japanese comfort food

Can’t wait to try more - Edit
We’ve heard good things about this place but needed to get back to Seattle, so we picked up some onigiri to have on the train. It was an excellent choice! The pickled plum was our favorite and I highly recommend. If you like spice, the Thai chili has the best kick. The Aleppo pepper one has a little spice and a whole lot of flavor. Our least favorites that we tried were the garlic and carrot-ginger. They weren’t bad but they just don’t stand out as much as the others. We can’t wait to come back to Portland and try more of their menu here.

Room for Improvement - Edit
I have had some really good vegan onigiri in the past and unfortunately the ones I tried from here did not taste good. The smoky flavor was over powering and did not pair with the other flavors. As much as I love healthy food, white rice tastes much better in onigiri than brown rice. I ordered the combo plate and my favorite item was probably the giant tater tot followed by the salad. The plate did not feel like a good value for the price.
Read moreWhile I did not enjoy what I ordered, I recognize that the other menu items might be better. With some improvements such as offering onigiri with white rice and increasing the size of the salad, this restaurant could present a better value proposition.

Good food, atmosphere and staff - Edit
I ordered the Katsu Curry which featured breaded fried tofu, brown rice, salad, and a curry stew. It was tasty and healthy. The concept of “Japanese comfort food” seemed novel to see in a restaurant description. The waiter dropped off my check a little early, so I started to eat faster as the restaurant was filling up. I am a slow eater (I like to enjoy my food), so this kind of took away from the experience. I don’ think they were necessarily trying to rush me, but I ate faster than normal and didn’t digest the food as well as I normally do. This took away from the experience, but I would still recommend.

Japanese Comfort Food - Edit
This place is very unique! At least I’ve never been to or heard of an all vegan Japanese comfort food restaurant before. I definitely loved it, and I’d definitely go back in a heartbeat. With that said, a couple of the things I tried did not hit the mark…
Read moreThe garlic miso onigiri was so salty I couldn’t take more than a bite. It was a literal salt bomb. Someone told me that all onigiri is like that though, so I don’t know if it was supposed to be like that or not. 🤷♀️ We also tried one of the udons (can’t remember which), and it was ok, but nothing any of us would order again.
What was AMAZING: zucchini tempura, curried korokke, okonomiaki, and the scrumptious kakiage! I highly recommend any of those. The Katsu burger was unusual and delicious. It wasn’t my favorite, but definitely something I’m glad I tried. Lastly, the strawberry mochi was also ok, but I’ve had better mochi unfortunately.
Overall, if you like Japanese food at all definitely give this place a try! The staff is friendly and accommodating. The experience is worth it!
Pros: FRESH handmade food, Friendly staff and nice setting, Highly accommodating of allergen restrictions
Cons: Some dishes over salted
