Fab little shop!

Great selection of vegan products, from pies to cleaning products! Didn’t notice any indoor cafe seating but there were seats outside. Was very tempted by the booja booja ice cream - I’ve not seen it anywhere else, but sadly would’ve melted by time I got home! Bit pricey for some things but think the prices would be in line with other similar stores. Friendly lady serving. Would definitely visit again for some product variety!

Ok?

The shop is nice, good range of products, but the cafe is very small and (at least when I went) has quite a small range of cakes. Nothing like the food on the other photos here. But the lemon cake and hot chocolate were nice.

Now on Fore Street

Oats have moved to new premises on Fore Street in August 2017. It is a nice space with a great range of products from store cupboard basics to sweet treats, toiletries and cleaning products to organic fruit and veg. Also a fridge and freezer with vegan cheese etc.
Although it is primarily a health food shop they also have a small cafe area with a couple of tables for tea/coffee, cakes, a few breakfast options, light lunches (hummus salad, sandwiches, soup) - all veggie, some vegan (labelled). I had the hummus salad to take away. Good value at £4 for homemade hummus and interesting salads.

Pros: Good choice of vegan products, Central location, Takeaway lunch options

Disappointing?

Now I'm not sure if we went on a bad day/time...but Oats was very dissapointing. after seeing good reviews, my partner and I had high hopes for a good vegan meal. The mini health food shop is good, with a decent range of products. The "cafe" however was practically non existent, with a single glass cabinet offering about five cakes(two of which were vegan); and a limp, boring, day old salad. The cakes were nothing impressive, and the single staff member there seemed incredibly bored and not bothered by us. (we ended up eating at Curious Kitchen, a short walk away. It isn't vegetarian, but has a few clearly marked vegan meals on the menu which turned out to be very good.)

Pros: Good shop

Cons: Disappointing cafe, rude staff

Hi I am sorry for your disappointing visit to Oats, thank you for taking the time to put some points across. I can understand how you felt given you were expecting the cafe as it was when all the other reviews were written. We have had a change about although the service should still be as good as ever and I can only apologise (not sure who was serving at the time) and suggest this was clearly a bad time and not the norm and we will take note of your experience. We have indeed had many satisfied customers since so we feel this is unusual but valuable feedback non the less. Sadly we had to close the cafe as it was (not long before your visit) and are endeavoring to offer some light bites suitable for vegetarians and vegans, such as sandwiches & soup, all home made, organic and fairly priced, aiming mainly at the take out market. We do indeed recommend The curious Kitchen to people wishing for a fuller menu and greater seating options, happily your experience there was satisfactory. We have now updated our listing on here so hopefully people will be more informed or ring us first for current eating options. many thanks, Sally

Delicious home cooked food

A small family - run café & shop. Mostly vegan. We went as a large group for a pre-Christmas lunch. The food was delicious and plenty of it! This is currently the only vegetarian eatery in Torbay.

Pros: Freshly, home cooked food , Friendly, intimate ambience, Good value for money

Cons: Only opens daytimes , Allow time for your food to be cooked

Great shop and café

Shop has a good array of products, including fresh, organic produce, canned goods (including tempeh and braised tofu), bread, chocolate, chilled and frozen items, home care and health products, etc. Cash is best: they charge 50p for using a credit card and 20p for debit card.
Vegetarian Café in the back, including a pleasant outdoor patio: coffees, teas, vegan hot chocolate with vegan marshmallows, cakes and scones, soups – all three were vegan and gluten-free when I was there; I had the Mexican bean-tomato, served with organic spelt bread and vegan spread. Toasted sandwiches (£3.50) with four fillings from a long list of filling options, including three cheeses but also vegan mayo, roasted vegetables, hummus, vegan pesto, grated carrot, olives, cranberries, etc., served with side salad. Organic salad bowl £3.75 takeout, £3.95 eat in. Clive’s pies and soysage rolls available too but take a while to heat (not in a microwave). Plan on 40 minutes for pies and less for rolls.
Sitting on the patio, I enjoyed a piece of sponge loaf with loganberries & blueberries (moist and lots of berries) with a cup of good coffee.
Free wi-fi available. See their website for more details, like on Facebook or follow on Twitter (to find out when fresh cake is just out of the oven, for example).
