Wir haben uns von Horta auf den Weg gemacht, da wir das Konzept dieses Restaurants interessant fanden und neugierig waren. Unsere Erwartungen wurden mehr als erfüllt! Hans ist ein kreativer Freigeist, die Küche pflanzenbasierte, Lokal, regional und saisonal - nachhaltiger geht es eigentlich nicht. Es gibt ein köstliches 4-Gänge Überraschungsmenü aus dem, was der Waldgarten grade hergibt und interessante Gespräche, bezahlt wird das, was man geben möchte. Wir hatten einen unvergesslichen letzten Urlaubsabend!

No sé explicar muy bien cuál es mi opinión porque tampoco la tengo muy clara. Definitivamente es una experiencia única, pero es algo bastante curioso o raro… La comida se hace con lo que es dueño recoge de su huerta, por lo que según el día entiendo que la comida será completamente diferente. Nosotros comimos una ensalada de diferentes hierbas y plantas, una sopa de tomate, un plato con diferentes verduras cocinadas y crudas, y un postre tipo pudding. Las porciones eran bastante pequeñas, pero como fuimos para cenar no nos quedamos con hambre. Lo recomiendo como experiencia, pero no tanto a lo mejor como un restaurante.

The place is magical. You can tell that the food is made with love and care. Everything is homemade and Hans uses a lot of (edible) flowers from his own garden. You pay what you think is fair.

You can feel the love and care in every dish the owner puts on the table. His surprise menu won't disappoint. The place is beautiful, and I suggest you follow the path to "Take a walk on the wild side", as written outside of the restaurant. There is also a very friendly cat on the terrace who may try to sit or take a nap on your lap.

Great place, really enjoyed it! Best vegan food I have had in a bit! Very original dishes made with organic ingredients that the owner plants himself or buys from neighbors. Lovely spot surrounded by nature!

Très très bonne cuisine copieusement servie. Il faut appeler avant de venir. Tous les produits sont récoltés le jour même dans le jardin de Hans, donc c’est menu surprise chaque jour : entrée soupe plat principal dessert, à prix libre. Le cadre est magnifique et Hans partage volontiers ses recommandations végétariennes et vegan sur Faial et Pico.

Vorweg: Unser Abendessen war ein fantastisches Erlebnis. Allerdings muss man unbedingt mindestens einen Tag vorher anrufen, denn Hans macht nur noch auf Vorbestellung auf. Es gibt ausschließlich vegane Speisen, und man darf zum Schluss bezahlen, was man gute angemessen hält. Es gibt also auch keine Speisekarte mehr.

The restaurant is completely vegan now. The food is delicious. The owner, a german guy named Hans grows everything in his own garden or get it from his neighbours garden. Everything fresh, biological and from the island, nothing imported or frozen. You can pay, what its worth for you. You should reserve in advanced cause there are no fix opening times. He has every day an other surprise menu.

Vegetarian heaven with vegan options - Edit
O Esconderijo is lead by Hans, a german emigrant, who offers european/german dishes as vegetarian versions, which is quite rare among the Azores. Some of the dishes are or can be made vegan. He is always up for a little chat and explained that he tries to use regional/local produce as much as possible.
Read moreWe had a delicous vegan strudel and a rice dish with sesame ball and vegetables, which I found to be good but the sesame ball was a tad too salty and I found out that I'm not fennel lover ;) As a starter we had a really big salad and a great tomato soup (beside the strudel my recommendation!).
You should ask Hans which of the dishes he can make vegan or are vegan, as there are no markings on the menu. Also if you don't want to consume honey please tell him, that the appetizer should also be vegan, if possible.
The rustic/charming restaurant is located amongst trees besides a small valley with lush vegetation. It has a great open space terrace which invites you to sit outside and enjoy the sun.
