overpowering flavors

The noodles were a bit too salty and the tofu had way too much barbecue sauce but my friends loved their dishes (Mac and cheese, burgers, fries etc).

Fantastic!

Today was my first time at Nuvegan and I loved it. They had what seemed like a vegan food paradise—probably 20-30 great side dishes like potato salad, mac and cheese, kale, gingered greens, etc. and 4 main courses of different vegan meat alternatives—barbecued, fired, gingered, etc.

I got the barbecued roast main with potato salad and gingered collards, and went for a second serving to take home which was mac and cheese and "meat" and broccoli. Everything was excellent.

Two other great things—the portions are massive and the price is cheap for that size!

I also got a fresh juice they made right there from a combination of three ingredients I chose. I got cucumber, lemon, and ginger. They made it very well—it was watery, which I wanted because I was very thirsty, but it was also flavorful.

The staff was so friendly and they chatted with us a little and were very helpful when we asked about this dish or that one.

I didn't get a dessert but they had plenty—different varieties of cheese cakes, pumpkin cake, cookies, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, pies, and more...

They also have big couches where one can sit quite comfortably and regular tables for those who prefer a more traditional experience.

Wow! I wish I could go there every day. I envy people who live nearby.

Best Vegan Food I've Ever Eaten

Guys, y'all better try the mac'n'cheese! It's not the best VEGAN m&c, it's the best all around mac'n'cheese, anywhere. We also had the fried steak and the fried chicken sandwich, which were also amazing. All around 5 stars!

So much to choose from!

We had a tough time choosing from all the delicious looking food in the case but the friendly guy at the counter made it easier by offering us samples. In the end we got a ginger tofu, mac n cheese, potato salad, curry tofu, fried chick'un tenders, and ginger collard green salad. Everything was so, so good! That fried chick'un was insanely good. The potato and collard salads were fresh and tasty. It was all incredible and I wish we lived closer. The only thing that wasn't up to par was the desserts. We had a red velvet and vanilla cake and it was just ok. Next time I'd skip desserts and order extra sides. But I'm not even taking off a star for the desserts because we were so happy with our meals. There's plenty of seating, the portions are big and the prices were fair. Highly recommended!

Pros: you can try samples before you order, lots to choose from, crispy, juicy fried chick'un

Cons: lackluster cakes

Good food; frustrating experience

Pretty neat place with large selection of hot sides, cold sides, and a menu of made-to-order things.

The food we ordered was good, especially the sandwiches.

The frustrating aspect was waiting more than 45 minutes for three sandwiches and a quesadilla!

No warning that there might be a wait. Staff was pretty aloof and only the third person I asked actually went to the back to see what was going. I was then told that the quesadilla takes up a lot of space on the grill and that's why it's taking so long. No apology, just, you ordered that thing and this is what happens. Thanks for the warning! And the quesadilla was not particularly large, tbh. And did they bump our order back because of that? Many people came and went as we were waiting. Is any of this normal for ordering a quesadilla? I hope not!

We ordered the food to go because our kids were extremely restless from a day of driving and it was just a very terrible experience. We would not have stopped if we'd know it would take basically an hour in total just to get our food.

I *really* wish I could give this place a glowing review. I think the concept of the restaurant and the menu are amazing. We went out of our way to stop in and try it out while visiting DC. Unfortunately there was no redeeming aspect to our experience other than the food being good. If it really takes that long to get a few menu items, that's a problem. If this was just a fluke the total customer neglect is still a problem.

Pros: Good food, especially the sandwiches, Great menu/variety

Cons: Inexplicably long wait and customer neglect

Best fried chikn

This was one of the best stops I've made. The Mac n cheese was delicious and creamy, the deep fried chikn drummies were the best I've ever had and the lasagne was incredible.

Pros: all vegan

Cons: parking

Fab Discovery

I had read about the Nu Vegan food truck on Happy Cow and actually stumbled upon it one day during my visit to Washington DC last week. I had the BBQ chicken drums, mac n' cheese, and collard greens. Oh, and a choc chip cookie. The servings were huge and everything looked tempting. I literally had a panic attach at one point when I first starting eating the chicken drumsticks, as I thought they must be real chicken! The cookie was amazing. I would have gone there everyday, but, alas, the truck wasn't there the next few days.

Pros: Brilliant Food, Generous Portions, All Vegan

Cons: Difficult to find

Love this place

When ever I am in the area of the University of Maryland I have to stop by. I normally get 2 meals or a meal and a sandwich, which are supposed to be 2 days worth of food but if traffic is bad, I nearly eat it all while driving home.

Soul food perfection

A great place for vegan soul food. They have a huge selection of entrees, replete with mock meats as well as non-meaty fare. They also have many hot and cold sides.

Everything looks so good that it's hard to choose. Which is why it's really nice that they let you sample some of the food before you order (you can sample up to three things).

I had a taste of the chik'n drummie. It was phenomenal. The batter was flaky and fried to crispy perfection. So I opted for a platter with the bbq drummies accompanied by artichoke salad and mac and cheez.

The meal was a bit expensive (about $15 after tax), but I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the box. They gave me heaping dollops of both sides, so it turns out they're quite generous with the portions.

Also, everyone working there was really nice, and the restaurant space is quite inviting. It has a relaxed and comfortable cafe vibe.

Overall, I'd highly recommend the place. I'll definitely stop by again next time I'm in DC.

Pros: Great variety, Can sample the dishes, Nice people, inviting space

Filled my tummy!!

Delicious place! Took my meat eating parents here. All the comfort and soul food you could image. They let us try a mock chicken drumstick and it tasted JUST like a piece of fried chicken. Parents were amazed. And I lifted my hands in praise. They give you a TON of food. So you get your money's worth plus lots of leftovers.

Pros: EXTREMELY friendly staff, lots of samples

Cons: music was kind of loud

A must go in DC!

My first stop in DC and don't regret it! The place is big and you have a tremendous choice. Everything is vegan and looks good. You'll have generous portions at a reasonable price. My friend had his meal reimbursed because it has been served late. Very professionnal behavior and friendly staff. Food is good and their fruit juices are great! I had a very good burger with tuna pastas. You should stop here if you're in the area!

Pros: very good food, friendly staff, fair prices, 100% vegan, generous portions

Loved it!

It was a cool experience getting to order vegan food from a hot bar. That was a first for me. The food my family and I ordered was "comfort food" and we were pleased. The breakfast sandwich was the highlight of our trip. Other delights were the breakfast potatoes, mac and cheese, sausage, and waffles. We liked everything.

The atmosphere was pleasant and all of the employees were really nice and helpful. The restaurant was very clean and the staff was quite attentive.

My only complaint is that the ordering/paying process was a little confusing. You have to go all the way to the back to get your food then to the front to pay and dine.

Pros: Tons of options Delicious Healthy options + comfor, Friendly service

Cons: Confusing layout

Good Food, Not Great Experience

I really wanted to love this place, and I would give it another shot if in DC, but my experience was not great. The ordering system was confusing to me, and the space in the back where you order was very cramped. We were there for brunch, and both my husband and I picked one of the brunch entrees and two sides. His was pre-prepared and given to him right away (breakfast sandwich), and they said they would bring me mine after I sat down, and it took almost an hour. They were not even all that busy. However, my vegan omelette was very tasty, and the mac and cheese was okay. The desserts looked great although i didn't try any.
I really felt like I should have been warned that my food was going to take such a long time, and that they should clarify their menu and ordering system. I went back to check on my food while waiting and no one apologized or gave me an idea as to when my food would be ready.

Pros: All vegan, Good food, Big menu

Cons: Not good service- extremely long wait, Confusing menu/ordering system

comfort food

I can't believe that I've never left a review for this place. Whenever I'm over by HU, I make certain to stop off here for something to eat. There are plenty of choices and I don't believe I've ever had something that I didn't like. Depending on when you visit, the line can be long (same with the food truck during the work week). I was informed that their loyalty card only works at the restaurant location, not for food truck purchases.

Pros: variety, friendly staff, street parking

Good if you're close by

We went out of our way to find this all vegan restaurant and were a bit disappointed with a few things... We couldn't see the menu till we got to the front of the line and then had to hurry up as others needed to be served. The atmosphere doesn't exactly feel welcoming and the food was slightly overpriced for the kind of neighbourhood where they're located. Bottom line - this is a good place if you're hungry and you're in the neighbourhood. Otherwise I would give this one a miss.

Soulfully good

Best restaurant soul food in the district area. This is cozy, tasty comfort food veganized. Think creamy Mac & cheese, eggplant Parmesan, warm moist cornbread, sauté greens; now go beyond the visualizations since it's all vegan! Good desserts, too. Dine in, take out, and they have a food truck usually found on the east end of the mall, near the capital building.

Pros: Vegan comfort food, Amble affordable portions, Restaurant & food truck

Cons: Parking, Distance from my home

Def a fav

I've been eating vegan food on Georgia Ave for over 10 years and love that there is still a place I can go to for good, comfort food, made by people who care. BBQ tofu, Mac and cheese, greens and yams are always top on my list when I want some good soul food. Love the cold bar with all the different salads as well. Kale and seaweed salads are bomb.

Amazing delicious creative food!

Nice ambiance, friendly and professional staff. You can take your time and ask for suggestions at the self service counter. VERY big portions, even the half portions for me European were very generous. Thanks! Food was fresh, tasty, and not at all heavy even if some dishes were with loot of different ingredients but so well combined and blended. Definitely I would recommend it and I am looking forward to try it out again next time I am in DC. Thank you!
