We were so hungry—it does the job!

First, I would like to say that Hakone has a couple of vegan and gluten-free bakeries and cafés, but they’re not open every day. If you happen to go there on a day when they’re closed, there’s nothing available except the Ninja Café. The chef is literally dressed like a ninja, super friendly and very clear about what’s vegan and what isn’t—only the rice and fries (and I was really happy about it). Personally, I thought it was really good, but I was also starving! I loved the strong garlic flavor of the rice and the pickled ginger was delicious. The fries are just basic fries, but they really weren’t too bad. Ketchup would’ve helped, but they don’t seem to do ketchup in Japan. I guess when you’re vegan beggars can’t be choosers, but overall I’m thankful this cafe was there or we would have been in trouble. If caught in the same situation, I would happily go back.

Pros: Very friendly chef, Super speedy service, Open when everything else was closed

Cons: Limited vegan options

Fried rice and chips vegan - ninja themed

It’s all there was but the chef was friendly and clear why other things weren’t vegan but the rice and chips was. Also spot for throwing ninja stars when guests aren’t eating there.

Pros: Chips, Friend rice
