Decent vegan options in Nikko - Edit
After visiting a few temples and shrines in the morning, we decided to stop here for a bite to eat since they offer some vegan options. We didn't realize how limited the vegan selection was until we spoke with the proprietor. She was very nice and fairly fluent in English. She pointed out the menu items which were fully vegan and I think there were maybe 6 or 7 in total, including appetizers.
Read moreWe decided to try the Vegetarian Yuba ramen requesting it to be veganized. We also ordered a vegetarian sashimi appetizer which is basically yuba. The starter was pretty good. It was quite fresh, but it didn't seem to be homemade since the tofu sheets appeared to be rolled. The yuba in the ramen was the same. Like a previous reviewer, I found the broth to be quite salty so after finishing the ramen and other items in the broth, I couldn't eat any more.
The food was decent, the service was great, but the selection was pretty limited. Also note they only take cash.
Pros: Excellent service, Friendly and knowledgable staff
Cons: Limited vegan selection, Cash only

Happy find - Edit
Finding Veggie food options in Nikko can be a bit tough, so we were happy to came across this places with vegan options. It's only a very short walk from all the temples and shrines. The yuba Ramen was good, but it was a bit too salty for me. The broth tasted a bit like an Instant Powder broth. The 2 different yubas in it were delicious!
Read moreThere is a fishcake on the Picture, but from what I understand they Just juse the same Picture as the non-vegan Version. The people knew about veganism and vegetarism and assured me, that the Ramen will come without fishcake and that there are No animal igredients in it.

Probably vegan ramen? - Edit
Thanks to the other review we knew to ask to leave out the fish cake from the "vegan" ramen but the conversation with the person there felt a bit weird, first I asked if the ramen is vegan, she said yes vegan, then I asked what the white-pink-round thing on the picture was (because we weren't sure what a fishcake is), if it's made with fish, and she said yes fish, and then we asked to leave it out. With the extra info about the broth base this probably got us a vegan ramen? Anyway the yuba was fun, the bowl size was filling, there were some veggies on top which was nice, a bit salty for my taste but still good.

Cons: Vegan label on dish with fish, Unclear communication, ask about the fish cake!

Tasty ramen and curry - Edit
I was totally confident that the staff knew which dishes were completely vegan, and ordered the vegan yuba ramen. We also had the vegan curry. Both were excellent and arrived quickly. A great place to eat and a convenient location. I had planned to go to the Bell Cafe but they do not serve until 11:30 despite opening at 10:30 so was very happy to be accommodated here.

Solid vegan Ramen in Nikko - Edit
So I was standing in front of the restaurant, contemplating if the 3 vegetarian/vegan menu items were really vegan (one of the ramen had a fishcake in it in the picture). The owner of the place came out and we had a chat. His English was quite good. I asked him specifically: no fish, Dashi or bonito flakes? And apparently the broths are made with a shitake base and he promised to leave out the fishcake.
Read moreWhat I ate:
- Vegetarian Yuba Ramen (minus the fish cake)
The broth was made with soy sauce and shitake. The noodles where quite thin and the toppings were some veggies and two kinds of yuba (one of Nikko's most noteworthy delicacies)
All in all this was a solid bowl of ramen. The broth was hearty and the veggies were a welcome addition. The Yuba was quite interesting. One was more on the softer side and a bit shredded and one was a bit firmer and in it's typical rolled yuba shape.
