Long queue, and I preferred other okonomiyaki in Hiroshima

We waited for about 45 minutes for lunch here, probably due to its proximity to the peace park and a-bomb dome.

Once inside, the experience was really fun and there were some obvious vegetarian options, but we found the okonomiyaki to be lacking a bit of flavour. At the time we wondered whether this was just because vegetarian okonomiyaki generally lacked a bit of flavour, but we tried okonomiyaki again in Okonomimura and found that much better, so I'd recommend trying there instead.

Pros: Fun to eat it directly from the hot plate, Clearly labelled vegetarian option

Cons: Lacking flavour, Long queue

Long wait, food is ok

Long line. The food was ok, but not incredible.
They have vegan gyoza, this is not common!
The vegan okonomiyaki was ok. But the overall experience was nice 🙂

Many vegetarian options and big portions

There was a queue but it went very fast and staff handed over menu to people waiting, so that we could order in advance and food was served soon after we were seated. Prices were around 1300-1600 yen. The place inside is very nice and dishes are served one a hot plate in the middle of a table.

Pros: A lot of vegan/vegetarian options, Nice atmosphere, Located in the city center

Cons: Waiting times

Try it once if you have time

Waited an hour to get in and then 30 minutes for the food. The staff was friendly and did everything to smoothen the process. The food was ok, nothing special, the experience was more important here. Portion was big however.

Pros: Clearly marked vegan options

Cons: Waiting time

Great food & great Japan experience

Be prepared to wait, it’s worth the wait!
My partner and I took turns waiting in line whilst drinking beers from the 711 across the street. About 45 mins.
Food here is truely delicious!!! 5⭐️
The vegan menu is at the back of the menu after the drinks😄

So happy I could try the traditional recipe and vegan

If you go alone, you may have a chance to sit in front of the cooks and eat while they are cooking

Once you tell them you’re vegan, they will give you the special vegan sauces

Super careful and caring

Always busy so try to go to unusual hours (although it’s always busy)

Needs vegan sauce

We queued for about 45 minutes (as we were there at 1715 - queue was much longer by the time we entered). Had the vegan standard option - good portion size but flavour was a little plain without the provided vegan spicy sauce.

Pros: Vegan options available including sides, Location next to Peace Park, English menu/speaking staff

Cons: Dish was a little plain, Be prepared to wait & queue

Pros: Sauce vegane

Cons: Beaucoup de monde, il faut patienter

A wholesome Okonomiyaki experience!

This is a good portioned Okonomiyaki place. A few options for vegans and vegetarians. More or less the same food, with different toppings.

Approx cost per person, with a drink is ¥2000.

Very close to the dome.

Pros: Wholesome food, Large portions, Walkable from atomic bomb dome

Cons: A tad bit expensive

Bland

Noodles were bland, cabbage was bland, the only flavor comes from the sauce (which is good, to be fair) and the overwhelming garlic chips. I like garlic, but not as the only flavor. I came here during Golden Week when other—possibly better—places were closed. I won’t return.

Pros: Easily identifiable vegan options, Reasonable price

Cons: Bland food with poor flavor options, Long wait

Yum!

I loved their okonomiyaki and how easy it was to order a vegan okonomiyaki right off the menu. (Be warned that it is VERY garlicky though). Service was very good too. Be aware that the line moves slowly and can get very long. Try to eat at off-peak hours to avoid waiting too long.

Definitely worth a visit!

This is definitely somewhere I’ll tell everyone to go when visiting Hiroshima. Not only is it in an extremely convenient place (next to peace park), but the staff and menu are very straightforward. Just ask for vegan English menu and they’ll give you the booklet, no problem. They are very clean there and keep your food and utensils separate.

Be prepared for your breath to smell because the vegan option is predominantly spring onion and garlic chips. The corn and rice cake (like mochi) were a welcome addition. There was a labelled vegan spicy sauce already on the table and they brought me a vegan tame, sweet sauce (like tonkatsu) too. I felt very comfortable eating here in terms of cross contamination/communication about being vegan. It’s a fun way to eat food, and I left full.

We arrived just before 5pm on a Friday and we were shocked when we left to see a very long queue outside waiting to come in. We were lucky to walk straight in - plus I imagine if you are waiting, you will be waiting quite a while because each dish is a process and takes quite some time.

Editing with some reflection: after coming here I saw many other places you could get vegan okonomiyaki around Japan. I’m sure you could probably find a better one than this one elsewhere.

Japanese Okonomiyaki in vegan

Was there with friends and really enjoyed it to have my vegan dish and they could pick what they want. Spicy sauce was quite spicy for Japanese restaurants. As others we waited quite a while.

Pros: English menu and extra page with vegan options , Separate vegan sauces on the table , Possible to buy vegan sauces there

Average at best

We were so excited to come here after hearing that you could actually get vegan okonomiyaki in Japan. However we were sadly disappointed, it was merely some cheap rubbery noodles fried over some cabbage, no batter or anything to hold it together like real okonomiyaki. There was no flavour beside from some green onion and bits of garlic so we used the sickly saucez. It was nice they had a vegan sauce but no Mayo to balance it out. And I know it’s Japan and vegan food is hard to come by but i know for a fact that you can buy the vegan kewpie Mayo at most supermarkets in Japan. Anyway the reason this review is two stars and not one is because the service was good.

I will also mention that the vegetarian option didn’t look quite as bad being that it had an egg and batter to hold it together.

Pros: At least they had vegan options

Cons: The vegan options weren’t the best

OK Okonomiyaki

Bland and lacking ingredients but expected in Japan TBH. The only thing that saved it was the sauce. Just don't put too much on because it's super salty.

Delicious vegan okonomiyaki!

This place rocks!!! Thanks to all the fantastic reviews, my husband and I ventured out on foot in pouring rain, it was worth every step!! So fun to watch them cook. The process takes about 20 minutes from start to finish. They are so kind, conscientious, and methodical. The okonomiyaki was awesome! So many different layers - things I would never consider putting together. But it’s fantastic! Must try food in Hiroshima.

Pros: Vegan!!! , Delicious , Authentic veganized Hiroshima cuisine

Vegan Hiroshima Yaki

Nagataya is very conveniently located closed to the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Park, and this is truly the place to go and try the Hiroshima version of okonomiyaki. They have a vegan section on the menu with three different types of okonomiyaki, but the staff was more than happy to modify everything to our liking. The moment we ordered the our vegan okonomiyaki, they removed the non-vegan sauce and mayo from the table and brought out a vegan sauce. Everything was really delicious, but be warned - the garlic chips while really delicious, stay with you throughout the day (and night)! One thing the restaurant can improve on is get a vegan mayo too - even Nisshin makes one, even though it’s not specifically marketed as vegan.

Easy, fun experience

Nagataya is a very foreigner-accessible way to enjoy Hiroshima okonomiyaki. The restaurant is comfortable with all types of dietary restrictions, as evidenced by their detailed English menu outlining ingredients, cooking methods, and recommendations. It’s a no-nonsense, lively way to experience okonomiyaki! There are three labeled vegan options, as well as one side (edamame), and several drinks. They even have vegan-specific okonomiyaki sauce that they’ll put on your table if you order from their veggie options! Overall, I highly recommend it.

Pros: Several labeled vegan options., Comfortable with many types of diets., Very popular!

Cons: Crowded on weekends.
