Best lunch spot on island!

Love love love this place! I’m a local, and finally visited after many years. The new owners have really brought it to vibrancy.
Appreciate the vegan options, although only one was available on my first visit (tip: go early - they sell out.) I ordered the Empress as a salad since I’m gluten free and the GF bread is not vegan. Super yummy. Delivered with smiles, eco-conscious packaging, and a beautiful setting for an outdoor lunch. Plenty of parking.
Got the Tofu Bahn Mi Salad 2nd and 3rd visit - delicious! No wonder it sells out.
Probably a good thing they don’t have punch cards, or some other local perk option, because I’d be coming here too often :P
Got the Valentina as a salad on 4th visit. Meh. Kinda skimpy, missing the avocado and had a small piece of meat and a piece of straw in it.
Visits 5 & 6 got the Rice Up Bowl subbing tofu for egg and both times they forgot the avocado, and one time accidentally delivered a meat sandwich instead.
Definitely recommend checking your order before driving away!

Wonderful people

One of my favorite spots on the island. The restaurant is under new ownership and the menu is much more vegan friendly. The staff here is fantastic, I don’t go that often, maybe once a week in the summer, and somehow they remember what I like, they know I’m vegan, and they treat me like family.
Vegan items are clearly labeled and delicious. My go to sandwich is the Mother’s Bahn mi, the Empress and Valentina are also super yummy!
They have vegan cookies if you can get there early enough before they sell out.
The decaf oat milk latte is my main reason for having trouble passing by without stopping.
Love this place and highly recommend them.

Edit to add: They have now added an animal meat version of the Mother’s Bahn Mi, so be sure to specify tofu and vegan.

Healthy sandwiches

They had three vegan options for sandwiches marked clearly on the menu board. We ended up getting the Empress (because they were sold out of the other two) which was pretty good - curried chickpeas on wheat bread. Seems like a small, out-of-the way local place but happy with the quality.

Their sign said open until 2:30pm but we got there around 1:45pm and they closed up right after us, so they don’t keep hard and fast hours it seems.

Pros: Fresh ingredients , Fast service , Three vegan options

Cons: Website offline, Staff closed earlier than posted

Would like them to be more knowledgeable on their menu

The lady at the register and the dude she kept screaming back to had little to no clue on what parts of their menu were vegan or not. At one point they questioned if GF was the same thing as vegan. I was shocked. They were out of A LOT of things, but I understand we’re in a pandemic so I took a deep breath. Ended up getting the daily soup as a side and it was actually really tasty, I just wish it wasn’t swimming in oil. It looked so gross I almost couldn’t convince myself to eat it (almost). Other than that, everything really did taste great and came out fresh and quickly for how busy they were. I would go back again in hopes they had more of their staple vegan items.

fresh sandwiches

We stopped there on our way to hike in Acadia. They had two vegan options. I tried the one with tempeh, the ingredients were all fresh and the Sandwich was good.

Pros: fresh ingredients, 2 vegan options

5 star quality

I stopped for sandwiches while on a work trip with my boss, and we were both thrilled with the selection and quality of sandwiches, and the perfect day to eat outside at the picnic table next to the sunflower garden. I ordered the vegan sandwich with baked tofu- there was so much tofu, perfect miso dressing, and plenty of vegetables. My boss loved his non-veg sandwich. I will stop here any chance I get.

Pros: quality vegan choices, easy vegan ordering, fresh & delicious

Cons: no indoor seating on a poor weather day, only open seasonally

EXCELLENT! Fresh. Inventive, delicious options. Locally sourced.

Recommended to us by a local. First impressions deceiving as it’s not really near much and it’s in a tiny little house. Worth the drive. If it weren’t our last day there, we would’ve gone back. They were picking fresh herbs and lettuce from the garden as we ate! So many options it was tough to choose. Sandwich ingredient combinations I’d never thought of and were delicious!

Pros: Lots of choices, Locally sourced ingredients, Friendly staff

Fresh sandwiches in an inviting atmosphere

Mother's Kitchen is a seasonal sandwich shop on Mt. Desert Island. It is away from the busier areas near Bar Harbor, but is definitely worth a stop if you are on the west side of the island. They serve sandwiches made with local/organic ingredients. The sandwiches are large, and are thoughtfully made with a creative combination of ingredients. They have five vegetarian sandwiches and two vegan sandwiches on the menu. I haven't tried all of them, but I have enjoyed all of the sandwiches I've eaten. They can make all their sandwiches as a salad. The actual shop is quite small and can get a little crowded. They don't have any indoor seating, but they have lovely picnic tables outdoors. This is a great place to enjoy when the weather is lovely in Maine (or for take-out when the weather is not so lovely).

Pros: Tasty sandwiches, local and organic ingredients

Cons: No indoor seating
