LOVE this place! - Edit
I remember the days that Mother Chu used to doze off in the corner. Unfortunately, she passed away a few years ago. She set up this place many years ago and she was the one who had made all the mock meats there.
Read moreWe still go there because we love their food. We even take some non-veg friends there and they love the food, too. And I must admit, the staff is incredibly friendly. Always explain their menu patiently even though it's big one.
Pros: excellent Chinese vegan food
Cons: no alcohol

I know why this place has been around for over 20 years - Edit
This vegetarian restaurant has been around for over 20 years. My first visit was around then and this will be the third time I have visited as we don’t visit Sydney often. I love the choice of food and the quality of the food that serve here. Thanks for always being good.

I really enjoyed lunch here! This little restaurant has some lovely offerings. The salt and pepper tofu is a little bland but I’d highly recommended the crispy gluten in chilli sauce. Staff are pleasant and kind and the prices are very reasonable. I look forward to going back.

Delicious Food, Great Service - Edit
I've eaten here roughly 3 times and each time the food and service has been consistently good. The menu is large and organized well so you can quickly locate what you want based on the type of vegan protein. Any non-vegan menu items (items with honey) are clearly marked too. The food is very comforting and filling. I certainly never leave here hungry. The staff are kind and willing to make changes to any menu item without issue. I love this place, I'll be coming back here as long as I live in Sydney.

Mother Chu's makes you feel like you are walking into a family kitchen and savouring all of the delicious meals that comfort you on those cold, Winter days, or on the days when you are feeling a little sore and blue. The food is rich in flavour, generously served, and is plated perfectly to nourish your soul and satisfy your tastebuds. Thank you for this little gem of a kitchen ❤️

I had an enjoyable dinner, pleasantly surprised with the amount of dishes available and really happy that everything was vegetarian/ vegan. Stand would be the faux bbq pork buns! Yum.

Vegan casual dinning - Edit
Informal restaurant with great selection of vegan and glutenfree options. Menu well marked. If you are glutenfree make sure you tell them as the gf symbol is can be make glutenfree. They will charge you extra for glutenfree sauces.
Read moreThe food was tasty but a little on the oily side. Loved the avocado soup. I had the clay pit with tofu broccoli mushrooms and was a big portion but on bland size. I asked for hot sauce and that helped.
Was not crazy about the coconut milk and black sticky rice dessert.
Service was slow and I need to ask for water 4 times. I had some challenges with communicating with server.
Pros: Glutenfree options well marked
Cons: Service was slow , Food was fast food quality

An oldie but goodie - Edit
Located in the heart of CBD on Pitt street. This place is close to where I work so I go when I have time for a longer lunch break as the kitchens can be quite slow. Food is Taiwanese Chinese cuisine with lots of options. I like the spicy sour noodle soup for a quick fix but generally order rice with dishes if I’m with company.

I liked it - Edit
I liked it, but my friend who has much more experience with Taiwanese food wasn't as impressed. Like every restaurant these days, it was a little bit oily. But the eggplant was great. I'd go again for sure. If you're into that stuff, there's a lot of fake meat, but there are also some dishes based on just plain old-fashioned vegetables for those who are on the whole foods bandwagon.

The other reviews were right. This place serves delicious food and the menu is extensive. The decor is basic and unpretentious but it's the tasty food and nice staff that make this place. I'll be returning for sure. PS you can find steamed 'pork' buns here ... Yum!

Mother Chu's - Edit
Wow after a hiatus of over 9 years we revisited this long time vegan restaurant. I stepped into a place where time has stopped, nothing has changed. Decor, cashier's table, ordering station same. I enquired after Mrs Chu who used to sit every evening in the same chair, that was still there and was told she passed on last year 96yrs great supporter of the Vegan Society (NSW). We had for lunch a plate of mixed veggies with bean sprouts ($18) and a plate of greens Cai Lan ($12).

It was great but not super duper - Edit
I enjoyed my lunch. The spring rolls were a bit tasteless and hard but the dim sims were delicious.
Read moreI had a mushroom rissole hot pot but my wife hated the flavour of the rissoles. I was quite happy with that dish but it certainly didn't blow me away.
Overall, mainly Chinese flavours so if you don't like that you may not like it.
I'm not too bad with chopsticks, but theirs seemed to be very shiny and slippery, so it was a struggle to pick up a piece of pumpkin or mushroom!
Pros: 100% vegan apart from some honey
Cons: Mainly Chinese flavours.

We ordered the wanton soup, eggplant clay pot and shiitake mushroom stir fry with tofu. Everything was delicious with the eggplant clay pot being the winner. The wanton broth was awesome but the wantons could use more flavour
