Handiest traditional and cheapest vegan food in town - Edit
I have eaten at this canteen that is part of the monastery. Vegans are very welcome as many items are listed as постные. "Post" is the Russian "fasting" tradition for religious purposes where people avoid eating animal products. Thus churches are an easy way to find lots of delicious and fulfilling vegan food for little money.
Read moreThe food is very simple, home made and the portions are very fulfilling and abundant. Do not expect something restaurant-or-café-like. It's basically a canteen.
As a foreigner, however, you can experience what is Russia's "пост" and enjoy cruelty free traditional dishes without missing out.
The venue is decorated with flea market stuff which is also on sale.
We have eaten 2 vegan borsh, 1 pasta with mushrooms, 1 potato mash with mushroom souce and a bottle of water for something like 250 rubles or less.
