Love This Place - Edit

You can't go wrong with Modern Love. I am biased because I have been cooking Isa Moskowitz's recipes from her cookbooks for 10 years now, so any time I get a chance to eat her food in her restaurants, it's a real treat. Having visited the Omaha location, I was very excited to try Modern Love Brooklyn.
While visiting NYC, my husband and I had dinner and brunch at Modern Love. I enjoyed brunch especially, but both meals were tasty. From what I can tell, the menu changes very regularly, and I suggest following them on Instagram. This was helpful in making our decisions!
The dishes are all very creative. For instance, I had seitan brisket for dinner, which included a tomato lentil sauce, greens, cabbage, and mashed potatoes. Dessert was tiramisu. For brunch I had grits with breaded mushrooms, black eyed peas, and greens, all smothered in a tasty sauce, along with a side of sausage. So good!
The space is roomy and lovely, although definitely try and make reservations.

Pros: Creative, delicious menu, Menu regularly rotates, Excellent brunch

Hands down best vegan food in NY! - Edit

Wow this place does not disappoint. While we did wait a while for food as they were super busy, the food was totally amazing and tasty!! We had brunch which was scrambled tofu and an open burrito. We savoured every bite. Very excited to go back for dinner!

Pros: tasty, big portion sizes

Cons: long wait for food, expensive

Perfect !!! - Edit

This place is amazing ! Very colorful dishes . Great combination ! Beet hummus dish is so good! As well as mozzarella and tomatoes! I don't know where they get their veggies ... but it tastes super delicious the same as you would get from the farm if not organic farm . My favorite spot ! Atmosphere service and food of course

It was awesome - Edit

The soundtrack: Isa's fave high school love songs from the 80s.
The ambiance: a nod to the former era of sappy romance with baby's breath and a flower on each table, punky style, adorable animal paintings, and cohesive colors and textures. Families and couples out to have the brunch of their lives.
The food: sumptuous and indulgent, no frills, caressing and comforting, romantic in the way where you walk away in total bliss, just wanting to cuddle with your lover (or food baby) for the rest of the day.

We went for brunch. The benedict was excellent. Scones were quite good, too. Fresh fruit bowl was perfection.

Pros: everything is delicious , MASSIVE portions, worth the price, lovely staff

Cons: not for those on a tight budget, more gravy on the scones!!

True Love - Edit

This recent visit was my second this year and I was not dissappointed. The food remains excellent and creative. Located on the Williamsburg-Bushwick border it has an energetic vibe that is contagious. That said, the clientele are diverse incliding young families, hipsters and us (a middle-aged couple).

Also, the staff are competent, well informed and helpful. Did I mention that the food is terrific??

Pros: All vegan menu, Gluten free options, Creative menu

let's hope for post modern - Edit

Celibacy I will choose over Modern Love any day
Disappointing at many levels -service ,fare and ambience the hype was so high for this place that the reality is a nose dive crash
As soon as we walked in we were not greeted but accosted by the hostess without the mostest
She berated us for being late and proceeded to unceremoniously seat us right under a loud speaker spewing bad top ten 80s trash,on top of that the waitress, though, pleasant was slower than an alimentary tract digesting a raw rutabaga
The acoustics were such that every sound was amplified including the flatulence from the table next to us
Well,we figured ,the food must be good -NOT it was the same old hackneyed vegan fare disguised as haute cuisine the only haughtiness we experienced was from the staff
$$$$$ get ready to sell some stock options for a dinner with wine and dessert
Really don't waste your time and money go to Champs and then have a donut at Dun wells around the corner

AMAZING! - Edit

I was so excited to visit Modern Love for dinner on my most recent trip to NYC and it did not disappoint. The highlight of the night is that I got to meet Isa!!

The food was amazing. I ordered the Kale Avocado Ranch salad. This salad looked small but was dense and hearty. The waitress told me that the chef did not like the look of the avocado that they had for the evening so they asked if I wanted a substitute and I got the tofu. Perfection. My daughter ordered the Mac & Shews. She was thrilled and ate every bite. She is not a pecan fan but spiced pecans won her over. Her boyfriend ordered the Hen of the Woods Piccata. OMG! I wanted to order this but decided on the salad because of the large lunch that I had. This was right up my alley. The white wine lemon sauce was remarkable and the entire dish was scrumptious. We ordered the Brussels & Bacon as an appetizer. It was tasty but a little small in size. For dessert, we ordered the Warm Brownie With Peanut Butter Ice Cream. We devoured every bite of it.

This will be on my must visit list on future visits!

Pros: Delicous food, Creative options

Cons: None!

so loud I couldn't stay - Edit

Guess my title says it all. I post this as a warning for others who are noise-sensitive, not to knock this restaurant or dissuade others from trying it. I gave it a five star rating, because I can't post a review without choosing a star rating, and I don't want to ruin its perfect score. But I never even tasted a bite of the food.

So I'm a huge Isa fan. I own every one of her cookbooks. Veganomicon was my first vegan cookbook. No exaggeration, that book taught me how to cook. I've even seen her cooking live, in Napa County CA. (If she ever does more of these shows, don't miss them; they're great! She's as funny and charming live as she in her books.)

I was so excited to visit her Brooklyn restaurant. It sadly was so loud (combination of blasting music and diners shouting over the music) that I couldn't stay.

Sad.

Really good - Edit

We tried the deviled potatoes, kale cesar, mac & shews (cashew mac & cheese) & poutine. Everything was really yummy, though perhaps leaning on salt a bit more than it really needed, The food lives up to its moniker of swanky vegan comfort food. We've been fans of Isa's cookbooks, and enjoyed her restaurant very much!

Pros: Delicious

Cons: Pricey

Planned a Trip Around This - Edit

Visited New York with the intention of eating here (as well as all the other amazing vegan options I kept hearing about). Like most, I consider Isa my vegan goddess. I swear by her recipes and I knew her restaurant would be amazing.

Even with high hopes, I was not disappointed. The cocktails, appetizers, entrees, and desserts were all delicious. My only regret was only making time to eat here once. I will say that I thought the dishes were expensive, but that wouldn't stop me from returning.

I wish more vegan places would consider upping their game like this. I've been to quite a few that were good, but didn't stand out. Every dish was well thought out - playful and unique. The presentation was top notch and the flavors did not disappoint.

As usual, Isa proves that vegan dishes can be just as rich and beautiful as their counterparts. Highly recommend.

Pros: cozy, romantic, friendly staff, inventive dishes

Cons: pricey

Best vegan dinning option in Brooklyn - Edit

Isa is the best and her restaurant is simply fantastic. We're so glad we carved some time out of our trip to New York to take the metro to Brooklyn to check out this new place. The food is fantastic. We're big fans of Isa, we have all of her recipe books. We were not disappointed. The experience was marvelous. We recommend to all vegans visiting New York.

Love Modern Love - Edit

An incredible new vegan restaurant featuring the recipes of Isa Chandra Moskowitz (vegan queen/chef extraordinaire, for those who don't know), in a funky, and yes, modern setting. Our server was helpful and friendly, and everything we ordered was crazy delicious (Me: matzo ball soup, Hen of the Woods Piccata, & Apple Pie a la mode. My husband: Caesar salad, Seitan Pot Pie, and Coconut Creme Pie. Spiced mulled wine for both of us). Isa served us our dessert! A bit pricey, but totally worth it. We drove in from Princeton, New Jersey, and again -- totally worth it.

Didn't live up to my expectations/price - Edit

I was very excited to try modern love on a recent trip to Brooklyn. I love Isa's recipes and we have been to an event where they served her food while she gave a demo and it was all incredible. Our food at Modern Love was just ok though. The best things were the handmade blackberry vanilla soda, and the chocolate cheesecake with the brownie crust! Both were very yummy! For my entree I got the Mac and Shews, which should have been perfect for me! But it was SO bland. Almost no flavor. And for $22 mac and cheese it should have been great. I did like the greens with it, but the main part of these did was just blah. My husband got the truffle poutine and it was the same thing. Pretty bland. The restaurant is pretty New so maybe we just got a bad preparation? Honestly i probably won't give if another try because it was our most expensive meal while we were in town, and also the least delicious.

Amazing comfort food - Edit

We arrived without a reservation and they managed to sit us at the bar. The bartender was lovely, the beer was tasty and the food was incredible. I got the butternut gnocchi and my husband got the Mac and shews, both were amazing. the décor was super cute and it was cool to see Isa in person running around doing her thing. We bought shirts with their adorable logo and will definitely be going back next time we're in the hood. not cheap but so worth it.

Pros: all vegan, cute decor, liquor license

Cons: make a reservation!

Full of flavour! - Edit

Had a great meal here - so many amazing flavours in one dish - my only regret was going here still full from an earlier meal elsewhere which meant I stuck to just a main dish - I looked on the surrounding tables' diners with envy as each dish came out - the devilled potato in particular were getting rave reviews from the table next to us. Definitely one to try next time I am in New York!

Pros: Great food , Nice decor/fittings

Delicious food - Edit

Great Friday night spent at Modern Love. Service and food met all my expectations. As a native New Englander, I was excited to taste the 'Glam Chowder', part of the Surf and Turf entree, and it was extraordinary! Also tried the Pot Pie which tasted exactly like a homemade chicken pot pie (minus the cruelty) -- very savory and filling! We also ended the meal with a warm brownie and ice cream, sweet perfection.

Love the food, but definitely a bit pricey for portions. The cocktails also need to come way down in price... they're good, but not $12 good. I do think they have enough unique offerings that will drive people to the restaurant, but unfortunately I will not be able to afford to come here more than once or twice a year (maybe three times if I drink water rather than sangria). With that said, the physical space itself is amazing... clean, modern, and shiny! Great addition to Brooklyn!

Pros: Space is clean and modern, Unique food

Cons: Price, especially apps and cocktails

Restaurantomicon! - Edit

Tried to make reservations for two weeks to the much anticipated Modern Love Brooklyn, Friday and Saturday nights are booked early so don't be like me and wait till the last minute to book a reservation. It was so worth the wait. The first thing we saw when we walked around the corner from the M train was a giant wall painted that said Modern Love. The picture does not do it justice.... It is beautiful. Then we walked it to a beautifully decorated swanky joint with really eclectic lighting. Lovely industrial space, but warm and inviting. We were seated by the bar and I was happy about that because the room is so large it is very noisy. That is the only thing "bad" about this restaurant. Every seat was filled and we are so happy to see that kind of enthusiasm in a vegan restaurant. The beer and wine list was amazing, it was really hard for me to pick which one to try. Then we ordered appetizers, the Truffled Poutine, and the Brussels and Bacon. OK, so the Poutine is to die for, and it is gluten free! The Brussels were wonderful, not too greasy or over done (I find them burned in other restaurants) with little bites of bacony flavor and eatable flowers that tasted really good in the carrot and parsnip puree. I never had eatable flowers that tasted so good!
My bf ordered the Seitan Chops and Apple sauce and I ordered the Hen of the Woods Picatta. I ordered the white wine lemon sauce on the side (I am trying to watch my figure) and I think Isa came out of the kitchen to tell us to make sure to use some of the sauce or the dish would be too dry. Was that her? I feel like we were visited by a celebrity! Every bite of the Picatta was a flavor sensation, the beans were extraordinary, the capers, and the mushrooms, I did dip the mushrooms in the sauce, It was wonderful! Nothing was dry, it was divine! My bf loved his seitan chops, and for the first time ever I saw him take home food! In his defense he did eat almost the whole plate of Poutine (minus 3 potatoes, I ate those ) by himself. I thought...oh no...he doesn't like leftovers, but by the next day, the little eco friendly "to go" box was gone and lunch was devoured.
The prices were comparable to other high end vegan establishments, it was not exorbitant. You can see the delicate care and the multi-step process that was put into every dish. This is not something that a novice can pull off at home, the price equaled the effort, the ingredients and the artistry that these dishes provided.

Pros: High end, intricate flavors, artistic vegan food., Lovely wait staff, friendly, attentive, and nice!, Great selection of craft beers and mulled wine...

Cons: The space is large so the acoustics are poor., It is not on my side of Brooklyn, Yeah Brooklyn!

The best vegan food there is. Right here. Go now. - Edit

There are so many amazing vegan restaurants in NYC but Modern Love Brooklyn is among the best. I've had the good fortune of visiting Modern Love Omaha so I went into MLB with high expectations that were exceeded. Let me first say that Isa is a hero of mine. I learned to cook and bake well because of her books and, as far as I'm concerned, she's the ultimate vegan chef. I am (very) often disappointed by food in restaurants because it doesn't come close to the food I make at home (thanks, often, to Isa's recipes). However, at MLB, the food is exquisite and surpasses anything I can make at home. This is vegan cooking taken to the next level. I don't think you could order poorly here because the menu is a highlight of the best that vegan cookery and the season has to offer. We enjoyed a satisfying meal that included luscious cocktails, a zesty appetizer, two satisfying mains, and two sumputous desserts and EVERYTHING was simply INCREDIBLE. There's nothing worse than leaving a meal and feeling unsatisfied or still hungry and we both left with doggy bags - I can't stress enough how rare it is that we take leftovers home. Our appetites are huge and we are picky as toddlers when it comes to quality and we left with full, happy bellies and leftovers which were happily enjoyed the next day. My one regret is leaving without telling Isa how much her cookbooks mean to me and thanking her for yet another scrumptious meal.

Pros: Great service! Friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable , Hearty helpings of delicious food!, Music, atmosphere, cleanliness.
