Quick friendly and hella good food!! - Edit

I tried this place while visiting my sister in BK and I was super impressed. The hostess managed to squeeze us in on Sunday with no reservation or wait the food came out quickly and was incredible. They had kid friendly options for my 4&1 year olds which was awesome. We like to eat quickly when we have our kids with plus so we normally get food and drinks together and get the check when our food comes. We made it out in 32 mins which was awesome bc that’s usally how long food takes to come out. We all got drinks including hibiscus sour which was super refreshing and five dishes which we all split : Cobb salad, eggs Benedict, burger, French toast, and tofu scramble with avocado toast.I don’t have a sweet tooth but if you did French toast hits the spot. I LOVED the Cobb and the Benedict I loved this brunch so much I plan on heading there for dinner asap!!! Thanks modern love be back soon!

Pros: Quick service friendly staff, Great atmosphere , Hella good food

Cons: Not a huge brunch menu selection but enough

Great for brunch and dinner! - Edit

We visited Modern Love twice for dinner and once for brunch - consistently great food with good portion sizes. Service was really friendly, food delicious and great atmosphere. It gets really busy, so I'd definitely recommend booking in advance.

Pros: Great portion sizes - you won't go hungry, Comfort food

Delicious - Edit

Great atmosphere, nice styling of the restaurant.
Make and shews was utterly delicious, and so was the brie and leek entrée!! So good, would come back for them and definitely urge you to try them.
I would've loved to have tried everything off the menu, honestly.

The fish and chips however are not recommended, the breaded tofu just tastes like tofu with the a bit of a crust and the chips are very large wedges of potato with little flavor.
Also, if you're having starters I wouldn't recommend also all ordering a main, the portions are quite large.
Other than that, would love to come back!

Pros: Great atmosphere , Amazing menu

Cons: Some dishes (e.g fish and chips), Some staff not so friendly

looks great.. - Edit

The food all looks amazing but i think thats all its really popular for. I tried several items from the menu and i wouldnt go back for any of them unfortunately :/ i really just think its over done and they focus too much on how it looks and sounds rather than the actual flavors working well together. I was very disappointed. I also found the staff to be bland and not friendly

Pros: looks good for photos lol, drinks are good

Cons: no parking, food was

More Than Comfort Food - Edit

They bill themselves as vegan comfort food, but don’t assume this is just a place that does simple, plant based versions of old, S.A.D. favorites. There’s familiar items on the menu, to be sure. But there is creativity and care with the comfort. A delicious experience, and excellent service.

Absolutely Delish - Edit

I had the grilled Caesar salad which was amazing and substantial, i could have easily been satisfied with this and a side. I also had the pesto pasta, creamy and yummy. Cant say enough about this restaurant. Maybe the best ever.

Cons: Need reservations.

the draw is an all-vegan venue - Edit

I met friends who live in Brooklyn at ML, it was a great meal with a hip vibe (swanky, as the menu states), and I love that *every* thing is vegan. The service was nice, the food was delicious, the menu was not extensive but everything was delicious, and the desserts were the best. Isa politely turned down a HappyCow window sticker, but it was pretty cool to be served by the author herself. Definitely make reservations if you know you are going to eat here.

Pros: all vegan! ample portions, lots of "comfort food", easy location

Cons: limited menu, not a lot of health-oriented choices

reservations recommended other wise sit at counter - Edit

I was told I had to sit at the counter even though there were many empty tables when I sat down and when I left because they have a reservation only system. For that reason alone I don’t recommend going there in less you’ve made a reservation deafly don’t waste your time

It’s not the receptionist fault but it’s a real turn off and breakfast can’t compare with champs but either way I will gain 20 pounds if I need it like that I can no longer go out and have these breakfast then have so much oil in them it was good food but it’s a turn off to walk in and spend all that money and be sent to our counter when there’s empty tables. The staff was very nice and kind

Beautiful plates - Edit

Let me just say I love this place. Everyone was so nice and so accommodating about changing my reservation last minute on a Friday night. The ambience was cozy and upscale and the place was busy which I love to see!
I have to say that the apps were the star of the evening. We got the autumn Brie plate, which I wouldn’t call it Brie but it was still delicious. The apples with the balsamic drizzle and the rosemary cracker. Was so good and the figs combined did taste like autumn. Then we got the poutine, which I wasn’t interested in the beginning but I’m so happy we did. This was so amazing. The fries were perfectly crispy and not too dense and the gravy was the best gravy I’ve ever had. It was salty and warm and I want to dip everything in it. The cheese curds were so good too. I’d order an extra side of gravy as I felt my stack of potatoes needed a little extra love. For dinner we got the hen of the woods picatta and the Mac and shews. I like both but I won’t be dreaming of them later. For dessert we got the pumpkin cheesecake and the tiramisu. Both were really good but I didn’t feel bad not finishing them

Pros: Friendly staff, Apps , Ambience

Cons: Move to manhattan

AMAZING! - Edit

I was so excited to visit Modern Love for dinner on my most recent trip to NYC and it did not disappoint. The highlight of the night is that I got to meet Isa!!

The food was amazing. I ordered the Kale Avocado Ranch salad. This salad looked small but was dense and hearty. The waitress told me that the chef did not like the look of the avocado that they had for the evening so they asked if I wanted a substitute and I got the tofu. Perfection. My daughter ordered the Mac & Shews. She was thrilled and ate every bite. She is not a pecan fan but spiced pecans won her over. Her boyfriend ordered the Hen of the Woods Piccata. OMG! I wanted to order this but decided on the salad because of the large lunch that I had. This was right up my alley. The white wine lemon sauce was remarkable and the entire dish was scrumptious. We ordered the Brussels & Bacon as an appetizer. It was tasty but a little small in size. For dessert, we ordered the Warm Brownie With Peanut Butter Ice Cream. We devoured every bite of it.

This will be on my must visit list on future visits!

UPDATE with visit in October 2017

This was amazing yet again! We had the BBQ cauliflower "wings" as an appetizer. They had a thick smoky sauce and included delicious kimchi. I ordered the chickpea parmesan sandwich for my entree. It was on a delicious crusty roll, had abundant tomato sauce and cashew ricotta. OMG, yum! There was a scoop of potato salad that was just perfect. My daughter had the pot pie. It had huge chunks of seitan, the gravy was perfect and it was loaded with vegetables. Thank you Isa!

Delicious Brunch - Edit

Three of us shared three amazing dishes and I really wanted to save room for dessert but I just couldn’t do it. Next time! I ordered the Tofu Benedict because the guy at the next table recommended it when I couldn’t decide what to get. Omg so good. I want to say that the smoked tomato is what made it, but I’m not going to sell the tofu & cashew hollandaise short. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy, and was extremely happy for an omnivore. My daughter, a vegetarian, ordered the shrooms & grits, and that was the clear winner. Flavorful and extremely satisfying. I’ve made Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s recipes at home, but having these dishes prepared to perfection was everything. Happy vegan.

Sadly, disappointing food - Edit

I’m currently visiting NY to celebrate my 30th birthday, and as Isa’s book ‘Isa Does It!’ was the one to really open my eyes to veganism, I knew I needed to experience ML for my special birthday meal.

We made a reservation the morning of, for 7pm. We arrived ten minutes before, and were seated straight away. Our server gave us a couple of menus, but came back less than a minute later to take our complete order. When we said we weren’t ready, she said “not even for a drink?” (No, not even for a drink - give us a chance to read the menu!) We each ordered sangrias, which were refreshing but incredibly watery. We then ordered our starters - I went for the arancini which was really incredible, and my boyfriend went for what I can only describe as chunky chips (I forget the name, sorry!) which were less impressive and very salty. My stater arrived 15 minutes before his, and when we asked why there was a delay, the staff member we asked was rude and said “it’s coming, okay?” We ended up eating at staggered times and I was already way finished before his food showed up.

The same thing happened with our mains; there was a ten minute gap between our food arriving (at the time, we joked that it was because it was my birthday, so they were feeding me first) and it didn’t really feel like a special dining experience. If this is standard practice then we’d understand if someone took a moment to tell us, but no one did. I had the seitan chops with applesauce and sweet potato mash - the seitan was really tough and rubbery, just like my poor attempts at home, and there was barely a dollop of mash on the plate amidst tonnes of applesauce. My boyfriend went for the linguini, which was very watery and not very flavourful.

The only redeeming factor was the dessert - a warm brownie with cookie dough ice cream. I couldn’t place what they’d used in the brownie but it was so gooey you’d swear it wasn’t vegan! When we reserved we mentioned that it was my birthday, and someone put a candle in it before they brought it to the table - a really cute touch. When we left, though, my boyfriend told me he’d used a decoy toilet break to ask a member of staff if they could sing happy birthday, and although they said sure, no one did.

All in all, this place was a huge let down for both of us on what should’ve been a special night. We found the majority of staff unfriendly and looking like they didn’t want to be there, and the quality of the food didn’t reflect the prices.

Pros: the brownie was to die for, lovely location, easy to find

Cons: the food quality isn’t amazing, service was disjointed, staff were unhelpful, overpriced

Love This Place - Edit

You can't go wrong with Modern Love. I am biased because I have been cooking Isa Moskowitz's recipes from her cookbooks for 10 years now, so any time I get a chance to eat her food in her restaurants, it's a real treat. Having visited the Omaha location, I was very excited to try Modern Love Brooklyn.
While visiting NYC, my husband and I had dinner and brunch at Modern Love. I enjoyed brunch especially, but both meals were tasty. From what I can tell, the menu changes very regularly, and I suggest following them on Instagram. This was helpful in making our decisions!
The dishes are all very creative. For instance, I had seitan brisket for dinner, which included a tomato lentil sauce, greens, cabbage, and mashed potatoes. Dessert was tiramisu. For brunch I had grits with breaded mushrooms, black eyed peas, and greens, all smothered in a tasty sauce, along with a side of sausage. So good!
The space is roomy and lovely, although definitely try and make reservations.

Pros: Creative, delicious menu, Menu regularly rotates, Excellent brunch

It was awesome - Edit

The soundtrack: Isa's fave high school love songs from the 80s.
The ambiance: a nod to the former era of sappy romance with baby's breath and a flower on each table, punky style, adorable animal paintings, and cohesive colors and textures. Families and couples out to have the brunch of their lives.
The food: sumptuous and indulgent, no frills, caressing and comforting, romantic in the way where you walk away in total bliss, just wanting to cuddle with your lover (or food baby) for the rest of the day.

We went for brunch. The benedict was excellent. Scones were quite good, too. Fresh fruit bowl was perfection.

Pros: everything is delicious , MASSIVE portions, worth the price, lovely staff

Cons: not for those on a tight budget, more gravy on the scones!!

True Love - Edit

This recent visit was my second this year and I was not dissappointed. The food remains excellent and creative. Located on the Williamsburg-Bushwick border it has an energetic vibe that is contagious. That said, the clientele are diverse incliding young families, hipsters and us (a middle-aged couple).

Also, the staff are competent, well informed and helpful. Did I mention that the food is terrific??

Pros: All vegan menu, Gluten free options, Creative menu

let's hope for post modern - Edit

Celibacy I will choose over Modern Love any day
Disappointing at many levels -service ,fare and ambience the hype was so high for this place that the reality is a nose dive crash
As soon as we walked in we were not greeted but accosted by the hostess without the mostest
She berated us for being late and proceeded to unceremoniously seat us right under a loud speaker spewing bad top ten 80s trash,on top of that the waitress, though, pleasant was slower than an alimentary tract digesting a raw rutabaga
The acoustics were such that every sound was amplified including the flatulence from the table next to us
Well,we figured ,the food must be good -NOT it was the same old hackneyed vegan fare disguised as haute cuisine the only haughtiness we experienced was from the staff
$$$$$ get ready to sell some stock options for a dinner with wine and dessert
Really don't waste your time and money go to Champs and then have a donut at Dun wells around the corner

so loud I couldn't stay - Edit

Guess my title says it all. I post this as a warning for others who are noise-sensitive, not to knock this restaurant or dissuade others from trying it. I gave it a five star rating, because I can't post a review without choosing a star rating, and I don't want to ruin its perfect score. But I never even tasted a bite of the food.

So I'm a huge Isa fan. I own every one of her cookbooks. Veganomicon was my first vegan cookbook. No exaggeration, that book taught me how to cook. I've even seen her cooking live, in Napa County CA. (If she ever does more of these shows, don't miss them; they're great! She's as funny and charming live as she in her books.)

I was so excited to visit her Brooklyn restaurant. It sadly was so loud (combination of blasting music and diners shouting over the music) that I couldn't stay.

Sad.

Really good - Edit

We tried the deviled potatoes, kale cesar, mac & shews (cashew mac & cheese) & poutine. Everything was really yummy, though perhaps leaning on salt a bit more than it really needed, The food lives up to its moniker of swanky vegan comfort food. We've been fans of Isa's cookbooks, and enjoyed her restaurant very much!

Pros: Delicious

Cons: Pricey
