An oasis

Nothing comparable exists in this part of cottage country, aesthetically let alone vegan-friend-ily. One gets accustomed to rundown clapboard houses housing greasy spoons or harshly lit linoleum-tiled family restaurants. That's the landscape.

Mirrors is singular. It's comfy, beautifully lit and situated, and dare I say it - romantic. If only it didn't serve meat.

My ladyfriend and I chatted with the owner, who luckily had lived with a vegan, and she happily let the chef know our requirements, and the chef - a good one - got it. These guys know what they're doing, having been in the business elsewhere for many years.

There are 4 marked vegetarian items on the menu: a portobello mushroom burger, fajitas, a bean and cheese quesadilla and a pasta dish with various sauces. We had the burger and the pasta dish. Both were filling, fresh, well-portioned and nicely presented. Lots of veggies. I substituted roast potato for the garlic bread, which came with butter.

Draft beer.

After a full day of hiking through the nearby Silent Lake Provincial Park, this was as close to culinary heaven as could be achieved out in these parts.

Will definitely return one day.
